Vinous (92)Medium red. Cool, subtly herbal scents of raspberry, licorice, black pepper and leather, plus a hint of medicinal menthol. Supple, spicy and fine-grained, conveying a subtle sweetness to its raspberry and spice flavors. Opens nicely to fill the mouth, but without leaving any impression of heaviness. Delivers lovely perfumed lift--and darker fruits than it showed a year ago in the barrel. Finishes fresh, classically dry and persistent, with a fine dusting of tannins. Not particularly backward in the context of this collection. |

Wine Advocate (92+)Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums framed by a deft application of toasty new oak, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit structured around rich tannins and succulent acids. It's a hearty, generous wine that should evolve nicely in the cellar. As usual, it's a blend of more than a dozen Beaune premiers crus. |

Vinous (92-94)(from vines in both Charmes and Mazoyères): Dark red-ruby. Inviting aromas of raspberry, minerals, smoked meat and dried rose, along with a cool licorice note. Juicy, intense wine with excellent definition and lovely inner-mouth floral lift. Still a bit youthfully medicinal but already conveys an attractive texture and a harmony of elements. Finishes juicy, spicy and quite long, with suave, fine-grained tannins and a repeating suggestion of medicinal reserve. Saouma was not the only producer I visited this fall who noted that Charmes-Chambertin has benefited substantially from global warming. Not too long ago, Charmes typically had a greenness as well as underripe tannins, he said. (I will withhold early judgment on a 350-liter barrel of Griottes-Chambertin, which was fusel and extremely reduced, and still had some unconverted malic acidity.) |

Wine Advocate (94+)The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of smoked meats, cassis, blackberries, incense and rich soil tones. Vinous (93-95)(the crop level here was barely 15 hectoliters per hectare, according to Saouma): Full, bright ruby. Higher-toned and considerably more expressive on the nose than the Echézeaux, offering aromas of black raspberry, licorice and violet along with suggestions of more exotic ripeness. Densely packed and seriously concentrated, but a bit youthfully imploded owing to its crushed-rock minerality; conveys a strong impression of dry extract but little early sweetness. As young as this wine is, it's much more harmonious today than the Echézeaux. Finishes very long, with serious but fine-grained tannins. |

Vinous (93)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beau Monts 1er Cru might be my pick of this producer's 2018s. Limpid in colour, it offers exuberant scents of raspberry coulis, redcurrant jus and wild strawberry intermingling with iodine and violet, well-defined and probably needing 3-5 years to gain more sophistication. That will come. The palate is packed full of juicy ripe red fruit. A succulent and plush Vosne-Romanée with a mouth-filling, silky finish that has just enough salinity and edge to urge you back for another sip. Excellent, but do give it 3-5 years to develop some secondary notes. - Neal Martin |

Vinous (89)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a pleasant nose with slightly smudged raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry and pressed iris aromas. It needs 20-30 minutes for the aromatics to really unwind. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy opening as you would expect from a Suchots. Plenty of candied strawberry here, a little peppery towards the finish, though I wish there was a little more tension and Pinoté towards the finish where the oak is not quite in sync with the fruit. - Neal Martin |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Pure perfection in a glass and unquestionably one of the great vintages for this cuvée, the 2015 Pavie is a blend of 60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 80% new French oak. Sharing some similarities with the 2009, this tour de force sports a saturated purple color as well as a sweet bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed rocks, white truffle, and licorice. Its oak is perfectly integrated and balanced by this wine’s massive fruit and structure. Full-bodied, deep, and superbly concentrated, with building tannins, it’s a massive wine by any measure, but what sets it apart is that it still glides across the palate and retains an incredible sense of purity, balance, and elegance. It’s drinking well today due to the vintage’s opulence, yet won’t hit prime time for another 5-10 years and I suspect will keep for upward of 50 years. |

Wine Advocate (95-97)The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. Wine Advocate (91-93)The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively conservative Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why. |

Burghound (97)A brooding and almost grumpy nose only grudgingly gives up its aromas of poached plum, warm earth, smoked game and once again, plenty of spice nuances. The velvety and opulent big-bodied flavors brim with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive mid-palate mouth but also serves to buffer the remarkably firm tannic spine shaping the powerful and hugely long finish where the only nit is a suggestion of warmth. This is a fantastic but seriously imposing wine with the structure to match so this is one to buy and forget you own it. In a word, brilliant. |
