The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has so much fruit on the nose: blackberry, sous-bois and cedar, more rose scents than I observed out of barrel last year. I feel that this is more powerful than the 2019, an unapologetically extravagant Clos de Bèze yet with a lithe, sensual finish that actually reminds more of Armand Rousseau. Yet - it's that good.Inc. Indulge in the exceptional quality and elegance of the Charlotte Dumay Corton Grand Cru Hospices Beaune 1999. Distinctly crafted from Pinot Noir grapes from the vineyards of prestigious Côte de Beaune region, this bottle exemplifies the refined mastery of Burgundian winemaking. Internationally reputed Hospices de Beaune, assured each bottle's finesse under their supervision, carefully attending to the harvest by hand to ensure pristine quality. This 1999 vintage impresses with a dynamic blend of complexity and longevity, revealing a layered sensory profile of ripe cherry, autumnal notes, and subtle undertones of oak. It's a testament to the dedication of the Hospices' cellar master, Charlotte Dumay, whose passion and skill ensured every bottle was treated meticulously during its making and ageing. Ultimately, the Charlotte Dumay Corton Grand Cru Hospices Beaune 1999 is a remarkable symbol of Burgundy's rich viniculture history, promising the discerning oenophile an unforgettable encounter with France's finest winemaking traditions.

The 2016 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a very pure, almost pastille-like bouquet with copious red cherry fruit mixed with crushed strawberry and a little cassis. La Grande Rue? [Post script: Bingo!] The palate is very pretty with fine-grain tannin. This is surfeit with freshness and vitality, although it does not quite have the depth and structure of other Grand Crus from the appellation. It does fan out towards the finish. The persistence, and the saline aftertaste are very appealing. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$12,271.18 -

Sweet, spicy nose. Very intense. Great polished tannins. Super-serious and bone dry. Tastes like essence of a wood-panelled room, somehow. (And I don’t mean wood panelling with TCA as in Middle Temple.) Very much for the patient.Inc. GSTSG$6,476.69 -

The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes is fabulous, blossoming in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berry fruit, cassis, coniferous forest floor, incense, rose petal and wood smoke. On the palate, the wine is multidimensional, expansive and full-bodied, with fabulous concentration and depth and wonderful sappy energy, its ripe tannins cloaked in layer after layer of fruit. A beautiful Charmes-Chambertin, from some of the oldest vines in Burgundy.Inc. GSTSG$8,253.39 -

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Pierre-Jean Roty compares it to the 2012 and 2009 renditions, which readers who follow this domaine will know is high praise indeed.Inc. GSTSG$7,964.54
