Vinous (94+)Red-ruby. Spicy black fruits, cocoa powder, violet and spices on the primary nose. A step up in volume, sweetness and depth from the Suchots, with very primary grapey, minerally flavors and hints of exotic fruits. As unevolved as this grand cru is today, it already shows lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very long and ripe on the back end, with the firm tannins covered by sappy fruits and spices. |

Burghound (96)The strikingly elegant nose offers the most complexity of these 2012s with its well-layered aromas of spice, plum, violet, dark cherry and sandalwood. There is a beguilingly velvety texture to the lightly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess plenty of mouth coating dry extract before terminating in a firm and impeccably well-balanced finish. Note that this classy beauty will also require ample patience. |

Vinous (93+)(50% vendange entier; 100% new oak; bottled the same day as the Suchots, in May of 2015): Bright dark red. Tighter and darker on the nose than the Suchots, hinting at black fruits, licorice, minerals and flowers. Also less sweet in the mouth but already delivers outstanding tension and definition, with the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors complicated by an element of noble herbs. The superb palate-staining finish features firm, suave tannins and outstanding subtle persistence. This aristocratic wine will need more patience than the Suchots but should ultimately surpass it. |

Vinous (93)Deep red. Smoky red and black fruit aromas are complicated by licorice and minerals. Highly concentrated, sweet and deep, with a medicinal quality to its black fruit flavors. Widespread millerandage here has yielded a wine with terrific volume, but there's nothing heavy about it. |

Unusually closed and less exotic than usual on the nose for this cuvee, hinting at crushed raspberry and Oriental spices, with notes of leather, mocha and minerals emerging with air. Vinous (88-90)Containing 70% whole bunches, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village is a blend of Les Communes, Les Saules and Bossières. It has a very floral bouquet, with wilted rose petals infusing the brambly red fruit, and hints of lavender tucked in just beneath. The medium-bodied palate is strict and linear, offering quite firm tannin and perhaps just requiring a little more finesse toward the finish at the moment. This is quite an uncompromising Village Cru, but intellectually it is very satisfying. |

The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite sweet with crunchy red fruit towards the finish. Palpable energy here, this is well worth seeking out. |

Vinous (92)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières has an exquisitely defined bouquet with transparent red cherries and crushed strawberry on the nose, very harmonious with light sous-bois aromas percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine backbone, almost a Malconsorts-lite (not written pejoratively I might add!) But there is impressive grip here for a Village Cru with pleasing salinity on the finish. Give it just another 24 months in bottle. |

Wine Advocate (80)The 1988 may need 20 years to reach its peak, as it is probably the most tannic, young Ausone I have ever tasted. The tannins are extremely hard, even astringent, but unlike a number of 1988s where the balance between tannins and fruit favors the tannin (always a troubling sign), here is a case where there is plenty of juicy red and black fruit extract in a medium-bodied, superbly concentrated, very intense and powerful wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2040. Last tasted, 4/93. |
