Vinous (92-95)
Deep, saturated ruby. Flamboyantly perfumed aromas leap from the glass: dark fruits, venison, smoke, minerals, earth and spicy oak. Velvety and palate-caressing but manages to maintain great flavor definition; an uncanny amalgam of power and cut. Intensely fruity and fresh, with better acidity and length than the Charmes. Finishes with completely ripe tannins and great persistence.Inc. GSTSG$3,825.68 -
Vinous (92-96)
Deep, bright ruby. Knockout nose combines black fruits, minerals and sauvage animal nuances. Dense, thick and lush, with very suave black fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Really sappy and chewy thanks to firm framing acidity. The tannins are fine but substantial and the finishing flavors mount slowly and inexorably. Not an easy style, but a wine with great reserves of flavor.Inc. GSTSG$3,825.68 -
Vinous (93-95)
Good medium ruby. Distinctly wilder aromas of small black fruits, roasted meat, coffee, leather and smoke; conveys a strong impression of soil. Like liquid silk in the mouth, with pure, precise flavors of blackberry, blueberry and game. Wonderfully layered and concentrated, and currently hiding its tightly coiled spring. Finishes with great length and hints of violet and caramel. A connoisseur's wine.Inc. GSTSG$4,534.18 -
Vinous (95-97)
Rose petals, violets, anise and sweet red cherries lift from the glass in Dugat-Py's 2012 Mazis-Chambertin. The contours are refined, silky and polished throughout. This is a fabulous showing from a wine that is vibrant, crystalline and utterly breathtaking. Although the Mazis is quite floral and intensely aromatic, it also has plenty of depth and mid-palate pliancy.Inc. GSTSG$1,617.10 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru, blended with 70% whole bunch and 50% new oak, was pretty reduced on the nose when I tasted it from barrel. So, bypassing the aromatics, the palate is medium-bodied with chunky, forthright tannins. This is much more masculine than the Charmes-Chambertin, touches of melted tar and tobacco appearing toward the finish, which feels a little conservative by comparison. Hopefully it will develop more charm by the time it is bottled.Inc. GSTSG$2,465.75 -
Vinous (92+)
(purchased fruit from vines on the Puligny side of the cru near the Chassagne border): Wet stone and menthol dominate the nose. Chewy and vinous but tighter at present and less harmonious than the Grandes Ruchottes. In a powerful style but not thick or heavy. The echoing finish is salty and dry. This will need time in bottle.Inc. GSTSG$3,236.97 -
Vinous (96)
A wine of pure texture the 2011 Chevalier-Montrachet captivates all the senses. Mint, lime, white flowers and Chamomile all vow for attention in a pliant, expressive wine of the highest level. The 2011 has a level of inner richness that is simply waiting in reserve. Another few years in bottle should unlock all of that potential.Inc. GSTSG$3,607.57 -

The 2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, matured with 20% whole bunches, has a tightly wound bouquet with dark berry fruit suffused with fine mineralité. The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru contains 60% whole bunches. It comes from three plots that, still, only made two and a half barrels this year. It has a very well defined bouquet that seems to blossom in the glass, although it will need some time for the stems to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very peppery in style with touches of white pepper and bay leaf towards the persistent finish. Vinous (91)
Saturated medium ruby. Penetrating, superripe, slightly porty aromas of medicinal black cherry, cocoa powder, menthol and damp earth. Generous, pliant and really stuffed with fruit; very solid wine with lovely restrained sweetness. Powerful flavor of black plum outlasts the big chewy-but-ripe tannins. This will get sweeter as the tannins melt. But the '99 may be even more impressive.Inc. GSTSG$2,701.89 -
An exceptional specimen hailing from the renowned vineyards of France's Loire Valley, the Bertrand Galbrun Bourgeuil Impetueuse 2012 offers a symphony of flavours distinguished by exquisite refinement and complexity. This vibrant red wine, crafted with passion by master vintner Bertrand Galbrun, is a testament to the potential of the Cabernet Franc grape. Hand-harvested at the peak of maturity, the grapes are carefully sorted and de-stemmed, before undergoing a three-week-long fermentation process, in concrete vats, no less. Wine Advocate (87)
The 1985 admirably reflects the character of this charming vintage. Deep ruby, low in acidity, ripe, round, fruity, and precocious, this medium-bodied, supple wine is very tasty and displays the cedary, black currant fruit so common in the wines of St.-Julien. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 3/90.Inc. GSTSG$1,345.39 -
Wine Advocate (90)
The 1986 Beychevelle, which I tasted from magnum at the château, has what you might describe as a light-hearted nose with joie-de-vivre. Even from a larger format, among many 1986s tasted, this is one of the most approachable with wild strawberry, mulberry, cola and graphite aromas that unfurl in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with spice and clove on the entry. It comes across as fleshier than I was anticipating and atypically for the vintage, tapering towards the finish. Arguably rustic compared to some of its Saint Julien bedfellows, it nonetheless has charm and a sense of classicism. Tasted July 2016.Inc. GSTSG$1,552.81 -
Wine Spectator (95)
One of the best ever produced from this estate. Intense ripe cherry aromas and flavors come through in this St.-Julien that's big and alcholic, with full silky tannins. Built more like Port than wine. Best after 1998. 25,000 cases made.Inc. GSTSG$1,336.86 -

The most beautifully situated chateau, with its great view of the Gironde estuary, Beychevelle is another of those Médoc estates that has found top form after a fallow period in the 1980s and early '90s. A subtle, refined 2009 with complex aromas and flavors of currants, smoke, minerals and lead pencil. Full body with ultra-refined tannins and a long, long finish. Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (89)
Bright, pale, green-tinged yellow. Ripe aromas of mirabelle and nectarine, with an element of exotic spices. Fat, ripe and sweet, with an almost glyceral texture to the nectarine and pink grapefruit flavors. A fat, spicy wine with lowish acidity. This hail-affected parcel was picked at the beginning of the harvest owing to the more fragile grape skins, noted Bernard Billaud. Will make a fat and agreeable chardonnay, although with limited vineyard typicity.Inc. GSTSG$118.35 -
