Decanter (96)
Planted way back in 1926, this 0.5ha parcel is always the most complex wine at the domaine. Violet and aniseed scents segue into a palate that's smooth, glossy and textured with bramble and black cherry fruit, some chalky undertones, stylish oak and subtle reduction. Supple, refined winemaking with appealing underlying precision and freshness. One of the best examples of the Grand Cru in 2018.Inc. GSTSG$2,525.24 -
Revered for its finesse, the Jerome Prevost La Closerie Fac Simile Extra Brut Rose 2018 is a true reflection of the exceptional wine craftsmanship prevalent in La Closerie, Champagne. It is here, from only 2.2 hectares of vineyards, that winemaking savant Jerome Prevost, concocts his enchanting libations. Utilising a solera system, he ensures continuity of taste over vintages.
This extraordinary 2018 rose, predominantly realised from Pinot Meunier grown on limestone and silt, exhibits an enticing nose of oranges, rose petals and red berries, supported by a precise mineral structure. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious dialogue between zesty acidity and succulent fruit layers, making it a perfect companion for seafood or aperitifs.
Experience sheer indulgence in every drop with Jerome Prevost La Closerie Fac Simile Extra Brut Rose 2018 - a sparkling jewel from the Champagne region that personifies the brilliance of its creator.

The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru comes from the two-hectares on the Puligny side, comprising five parcels vinified separately (although I tasted the final blend). It has a very pure bouquet and, especially for Drouhin, an intense bouquet of lanolin, walnut and pressed flower aromas that if anything becomes even more powerful with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with superb balance, almost symmetrical, and just the right amount of salinity. This is a vibrant, precise Montrachet with touches of sea salt and ginger toward the very persistent finish, which fans out with brio. Deeply impressive.Inc. GSTSG$1,525.17 -

(5-Star Wine) The star wine of the event. Glowing purple in colour, the 2018 Drouhin Musigny is magical in all its dimensions, without any suggestion of being a blockbuster. The fruit is superbly sensual while maintaining its gracefulness, and the tannins are exceptionally fine grained. The acidity is also beautifully integrated and the persistence stands out. What more to say?Inc. GSTSG$1,807.85 -

A gorgeous, elegant wine, the 2018 Barbaresco Vigneto Gallina is captivating from the very first taste. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and menthol build in the glass. More than anything else, though, I am impressed by the wine's vibrancy and poise. Gallina has always aged beautifully here. I expect that will be the case with the 2018 as well.Inc. GSTSG$841.94 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets has turned out brilliantly, revealing an incipiently complex bouquet featuring scents of white flowers, Anjou pear, fresh peach, fresh pastry and flinty reduction. Medium to full-bodied, deep and satiny, it's a lively, concentrated wine with lovely mid-palate amplitude and a lively, saline finish. Inherently more open and immediate than the superb 2017 rendition, it will nevertheless merit and reward some bottle age.Inc. GSTSG$3,376.62 -

More lemon than lime in colour with its high-toned refreshing bouquet. There is some lime blossom, very complex, not the weight of the astonishing Bâtard-Montrachet, but this is a beautifully dressed mannequin in the finest silk, with a little bit of orange blossom in its hair. Incredible persistence. Gorgeous aromatics, so different from the Bâtard yet equally outstanding.Inc. GSTSG$2,265.65 -

Fresh pale primrose. The bouquet is undeveloped at first but shows promise. A little bit of sulphur checks the back of the throat. Really fine intensity, white fruit, a touch of greengage, untogether at the moment but with fine potential. Indeed, there is immense potential, this may be the most concentrated wine of the day. In fact, for me the wine of the whole four day tasting event. DIAM closure.Inc. GSTSG$2,563.39 -

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is a little confit and jammy on the nose, though the fruit is attractive, wild strawberry and raspberry, touches of orange pith. It coheres impressively in the glass despite a touch of reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins. Plenty of freshness here, saline, vibrant and bright, this fans out gloriously towards the finish with a persistent, spicy, slightly exotic finish that does not detract from typicité. Big things ahead. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. GSTSG$992.79 -
Vinous (92-95)
The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is soft, silky and wonderfully understated, as wines from this site tend to be. Sweet perfumed overtones give the Clos its weightless, sensual feel, and yet there is plenty of depth in the wine that is just waiting to emerge. Lemon confit, mint, white pepper and wild flowers all come together in this ethereal, graceful and somewhat elusive Chablis.Inc. GSTSG$904.05 -

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is just all goodness. Crème de cassis, lavender, graphite, cinnamon and licorice all grace this exquisite, wonderfully nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon. There is almost no sensation of tannin. The 2018 impresses with its magnificent purity and pedigree. Time brings out the wine's inherent gravitas and pure power. Brilliant ruby. Deeply perfumed red and blue fruit and floral aromas are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, licorice and smoky minerals. Juicy and concentrated in style, offering appealingly sweet cherry and raspberry liqueur flavors that become livelier and spicier as the wine opens up. Shows impressive power and breadth, and the long, floral- and spice-driven finish is shaped by steadily building tannins. Note that there was no Vieilles Vignes bottling made in 2018.Inc. Wine Advocate (100)
The 2018 Château Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, representing 36% of the crop this year. The wine has a pH of 3.8 and 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal tantalizing scents of crème de cassis, wild blueberries and Black Forest cake with hints of redcurrant jelly, rose oil, dark chocolate and cedar chest plus a touch of star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with opulent black fruit, fragrant earth and floral layers, supported by a rock-solid structure of exquisitely ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless backbone of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. This is classic Margaux at its most seductive, although it is, rather amazingly, approachable and absolutely delicious right now. But, to enjoy its full glory, you will want to cellar it for at least 6-8 years and then watch it metamorphize over the next 40+ years.Inc. GSTSG$1,263.57 -

The 2018 Mazeyres is absolutely gorgeous. Bright, exquisitely perfumed and nuanced, Mazeyres shows just how attractive the best wines from Pomerol's sandier soils can be. Floral notes add lift to a core of red/purplish berry fruit, with striking textural depth and nuance that builds in the glass. Although quite accessible, Mazeyres also offers a good bit of depth while retaining its mid-weight personality. Tasted four times.Inc. GSTSG$571.03 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a fragrant bouquet of crushed rose petals and briar infusing the airy red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced with pure red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, a hint of dark chocolate and a finely proportioned, smooth finish. Very fine.Inc. GSTSG$1,321.97 -
Vinous (95-97)
The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a much more imposing bouquet compared to the Cros Parantoux, the intense blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone and clove scents gently unfurling in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and enormous depth, yet gentle in terms of grip. There is a sense of symmetry on the finish here, along with superb length, yet this will clearly require more bottle age than the Cros Parantoux.Inc. GSTSG$11,372.49 -
Vinous (91-93)
The 2018 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru is matured in 15% new oak. It has a very delineated, focused bouquet of mineral-rich red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, gentle grip, superb mineralité and real weight and depth on the very long, persistent finish. This is beautifully balanced. Superb.Inc. GSTSG$443.41 -
Vinous (90-92)
The 2018 Beaune Clos des Aigrots 1er Cru Blanc has a fragrant bouquet of orange blossom, tangerine and light petrolly aromas that lend an almost Riesling-like allure. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. The very harmonious finish displays nuttiness and salinity reminiscent of a Meursault. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$392.18 -
Vinous (94)
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 1er Cru has a divine, precise bouquet with detailed red fruit, crushed minerals and hints of sous-bois, focused and engaging. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, perfectly judged acidity, tight and linear yet brimming with energy. Persistent on the finish, this is a classy Chambolle that needs another 24 months in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. GSTSG$822.62 -
Vinous (89)
The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillières 1er Cru does not quite deliver the vivacity or delineation of Liger-Belair's Clos des Grandes Vignes - a little oaky, but there is sufficient fruit to support it. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, good weight and acidity. The muscular finish lacks the elegance and refinement that a cooler vintage would bestow. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. GSTSG$936.75 -
Jeb Dunnuck (100)
A full-bodied powerhouse as well as a perfect wine, the 2018 Château Montrose is a final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length. It reminds me a little of a fresher version of the 2003, although there's more Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018 as well as less Merlot. It has that classic Montrose minerality and backward, mineral-laced style, yet I suspect this will be drinkable in just 5-6 years and should evolve into a modern-day legend from this terroir.Inc. I'm not alone in considering this one of the all-time great Moutons - it was awarded World's Greatest Wine is a competition last year that saw numerous rounds of blind tasting. It's worth your while to find out why - this is a powerhouse of beautiful fruits - layer upon concentrated layer of blackberry, cassis, liquorice, baked earth, cigar box, black truffle and the signature smoked and grilled spices of Mouton. The tannins are velvety but determined, holding on to their fruit with no intention of letting go for another few decades. 100% new oak. There is the tiniest touch of Petit Verdot in the blend but under 1% so it’s not in the official figures. 62% of production went into the grand vin. 3.78pH. 88IPT.
