Wine Advocate (94)The 2017 Saint Joseph offers up effusive notes of mint, black olives and black cherries. As usual, the Gonons have managed to combine herbal, savory and fruity elements into a compelling, harmonious whole. The wine is medium to full-bodied and fully ripe, perhaps not quite as lush and fruit-driven as the 2018, but it's still a tremendous success, capped off by gentle tannins and salted licorice on the long finish. |

Vinous (89-92)(from three essentially south-facing vineyards; one-third 25-year-old vines and two-thirds 55): Pale yellow-green. Quite different on the nose than the Chatenière, offering fascinating scents of lemon and white peach complicated by herbs, mint and a suggestion of petrol. Impressively rich and thick but not oily, with flavors of lemon and lime ice enlivened by nicely integrated acidity. The palate-saturating finish is tactile but smooth, displaying terrific lift and length. There's no obvious rain effect here, due to the slope of the vineyards. |

Wine Advocate (100)The 2017 Vintage Port Nacional is a field blend, mostly Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Sousão and Tinta Roriz, aged for 18 months in old wood. It comes in at 99 grams of residual sugar and was bottled about a month before this tasting after 18 months in wooden vats. In 2016, I might've made an argument that the regular Noval was better. In this vintage, this seems to be a clear choice, granting that Ports change constantly in their youth. Its siblings at all levels in the last few vintages are very fine, but this is an indisputable benchmark that seems to better them all. Rich and vibrant, this has plenty of stuffing and flavor, more than the regular Noval. Then, it adds layer after layer of power. A couple of hours of air makes both the flavors and tannins more intense. It is simply gripping—yet also remarkably fresh. It's a great Noval, and one of the shortlist candidates for Wine of the Vintage. There were 200 cases produced. |

Vinous (89-92)Captivating nose combines white fruits, mint and menthol, lifted by powdered stone and a floral topnote. More saline than the foregoing samples, conveying a dry but round umami character and notes of minerals and menthol. Less open than the Boudriotte, with its substantial alcohol supported by flavor intensity. (13.7% alcohol) |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Even better (as well as a perfect wine), the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud checks in as a nominal blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was brought up in demi-muids. It reveals a deep purple color as well as heavenly notes of blackberry and currant fruits intermixed with loads of cured meats, spice box, Asian spices, and a distinct loamy soil and minerality. Always more structured and powerful than the Reserve Auguste Favier release (no doubt due to the Mourvèdre component), it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. Pure perfection in a glass, it’s as good as wine gets. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades. Hats off to winemaker Isabelle Ferrando for yet another thrilling wine! |

Vinous (95)Brilliant purple. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit preserves, spicecake, potpourri and incense. Densely packed and impressively energetic on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis, cherry liqueur and floral pastille flavors that open up steadily on the back half. The floral and spice notes carry emphatically through the impressively long, youthfully tannic finish, which leaves a smoky mineral flourish behind. |
