Wine Advocate (98)I remember paying what at the time seemed like a small fortune for bottles of Giacosa’s 1990 Barolo Riserva Falletto at Peck’s Enoteca in Milan. What I would give today to be able to buy more at the same tariff! The 1990 Barolo Riserva Falletto is one of Bruno Giacosa’s most towering wines. Period. Rich, layered and opulent, this mineral-driven, powerful Barolo covers every inch of the palate with masses of dark fruit, smoke, soy, plums, menthol, dried roses, pine and a host of other balsamic overtones. This vivid, kaleidoscopic Barolo is a reference-point wine readers won’t want to miss. As always, the Riserva Falletto is virile and authoritative in tone. Simply put, it its profound. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030. |

Wine Spectator (96)So perfumed and beautiful. Smells like an outstanding Burgundy. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long fruity and focused finish. Hint of raisin. Beautiful balance and class. Better in a couple of years. Even better than I remember.--1998 Piedmont blind retrospective (2008). Best after 2010. 1,000 cases made. -JS |

Vinous (98)The 1982 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is one of my very favorite Conterno wines. It is the first vintage I remember my father telling me it was ‘great.’ Tasted next to wines of its era and pedigree, the 1982 is wonderfully aromatic and persistent, with redder tonalities of fruit and medium-bodied structure. It is also remarkably nuanced. Over the last few years, I have started to think the 1982 is best enjoyed at its current peak. That’s not to say the 1982 won’t last for quite some time, it likely will, but I don’t see it getting materially better or more pleasurable than it is now. This is an especially fine magnum. |

Vinous (98)The 1997 Barolo Riserva Monfortino (magnum) is the first wine in this tasting that I started to get to know when it was in cask. Back then it was unbelievably unctuous and exotic. Today, it is all that, and more. Red cherry jam, mocha, licorice, sweet rose petal and leather are some of many notes that open in the glass, but ultimately the 1997 is not a wine that is drunk, but one that is enjoyed as a total sensory overload. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (99)Can you believe Conterno’s 2001 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is next? Neither can I. What a wine. Sweet, perfumed and also massively endowed in every dimension, the 2001 Monfortino is another wine that pushes all the right buttons. |

Vinous (93)The 2017 Barolo Monprivato is elegant, classy and nuanced. Crushed red berry fruit, spice and blood orange lend and exotic flair to this silky, mid-weight Barolo. The 2017 loses some of its persistence with air, but it offers tons of immediacy and sheer allure. Best of all, the 2017 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is one of the better recent vintages of Monprivato the Mascarello family has released. |

Vinous (94)Our first flight showcases two fabulous 2008 Barolos, wines from a vintage that continues to impress. The Barolo Brunate (formerly Brunate-Le Coste) gets most of the attention at Rinaldi. I am curious to see how the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is holding up. The answer is very well. Bright, linear and focused, in the style of the year, the Cannubi S. Lorenzo-Ravera is fabulous. It is perhaps a bit more austere than its sibling, but that just adds to its super-classic feel. I love the energy here. |

Vinous (95)The 2009 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera emerges from the glass with sweet red berries, leather, licorice, menthol and sweet spices, all supported by fine, silky tannins. I very much like the sense of energy and vibrancy Rinaldi was able to achieve in 2009, no small feat. The Cannubi San Lorenzo/Ravera has excellent color, freshness, vibrancy, and above all else superb balance. It is easily one of the highlights of the year. |

Vinous (93+)(an 80/20 blend): Light-medium red. Exotic, slightly decadent, old-style aromas of roasted strawberry, truffley underbrush, tar and brown spices. Suave on entry, then creamy in the middle, with red cherry and strawberry flavors complicated by slightly funky but fascinating porcini and earth tones. Marta describes the Brunate-La Coste as more austere, blacker wine but this 2009 is atypically gentle in the early going, even if there's plenty of ripe tannins to support a leisurely evolution in bottle. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)The 2001 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is stunning. It opens with gorgeous aromas of rose petals and sweet ripe cherries that meld seamlessly onto a palate of dark raspberries, cocoa and licorice. It offers superb length and elegant tannins in a style that is incredibly delicate and surprisingly approachable today. This will be a beautiful wine to follow over the following years and decades. 95 |

Wine Advocate (96)The estate's 2004 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is another awesome wine. Initially linear on entry, it explodes on the palate with a compelling array of dark fruit, smoke, tar, licorice, new leather, plums and baking spices. Although Bric del Fiasc is typically a wine that relies on power, the 2004 is notably refined and elegant, with sweet silky tannins that support the fruit from start to finish. Simply put, this is a remarkable wine from Enrico Scavino. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. |

Vinous (95+)Good deep, full red. Wonderfully vibrant nose hints at raspberry, flowers, minerals and pepper. Sappy and vinous in the mouth, with insinuating sweetness to its flavors of red cherry, raspberry and dried flowers. Not as large-scaled as the Bric del Fiasc but this energetic, sharply delineated wine expands impressively with aeration and finishes with terrific building length. Lay this one down for fireworks in about eight years. |

Wine Advocate (95+)Luca recently purchased more land in the Lazzarito cru. The 2009 Barolo Lazzarito delivers subdued notes of red rose and violet that build in intensity as the wine takes on more air in the glass. Black fruit, plum, cassis, leather, tar and licorice soon follow suit. This wine is an absolute, drop-dead stunner. Its tannic crispness makes it feel lively and buoyant in the mouth. The wine shows heft and importance that become firmly etched in the mouth. Each time I went back to the glass, the wine told a new story. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2035. |
