Vinous (92-94)
Dark red. Restrained but pure aromas of blackberry, currant, minerals and spices, complicated by a whiff of fresh blood. Densely packed and layered, with lovely finesse and minerality for this cuvee. Finishes spicy, sweet and long, with considerable dusty tannins and a whiff of black licorice. This is balanced to offer early appeal but has the juicy concentration and backbone to age well.Inc. GSTSG$3,097.21 -
Vinous (90+)
Bright, full ruby. Captivating aromas of cassis, game, mocha and brown spices. Sweet, concentrated and chewy, with powerful cassis and kirsch fruit flavors. Already displays wonderful inner-mouth aromatic character. Finishes with rather strong, slightly tough tannins that will require patience. This is quite impressive, but the 2000 version appears to have sweeter tannins.Inc. GSTSG$1,542.13 -

Burghound (88-91)
A brooding and much more deeply pitched and sauvage-inflected nose offers up notes of red and dark currant along with more newly turned earth inferences. The slightly riper but still sleek and nicely rich middle weight flavors also possess outstanding delineation on the equally austere but longer finish. This needs to add depth, but it may well do so if allowed 6 to 8 years of bottle aging. (88-91)/2026+Inc. GSTSG$3,896.53 -
Vinous (89-91)
Deep red-ruby. Complex, lively aromas of black raspberry, smoke, mocha, animal fur and minerals. The most concentrated and serious of these village wines to this point, with a strong mineral character contributing to the wine chewy firmness. Dusty tannins coat the palate. This will age slowly and well.Inc. GSTSG$9,765.09 -
Vinous (92)
Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Sexy perfume of raspberry, Asian spices, dried flowers, sandalwood and gentian root opened nicely in the glass. Spicy, fine-grained and vibrant on the palate; not especially sweet or fleshy but surprisingly fresh and easy to drink, showing lovely ripe acidity and excellent retention of fruit. This may not have the thickness of today's Mortet wines but it's just entering its plane of peak maturity. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and terrific spicy length. Arnaud Mortet noted that his father Denis aged this wine entirely in new oak.Inc. GSTSG$1,629.44 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-91)
Red-ruby. Reticent nose hints at coffee and sweet oak. Locked up tight today and revealing very little personality. I don't get a lot of sweetness here. Finishes with noteworthy persistence but today the tannins dominate. Seems clearly less successful than the Champeaux.Inc. GSTSG$2,337.83 -

It has a vibrant, tightly wound bouquet with wet limestone/petrichor scents complementing the shimmering black cherry and orange zest scents. The 1990 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes 1er Cru is an absolutely sensational wine that boasts astonishing detail on the nose, unbelievably fresh considering the warmth of the growing season, the stem addition completely subsumed. Hints of sage and oregano are discretely embroidered into the black fruit, later some gorgeous loam-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, perfect acidity and with just a pinch of black pepper seasoning the black fruit. This is not just well balanced, but conveys an unerring sense of symmetry that leaves you awestruck. With aeration I notice more fruit and just a hint of balsamic towards the finish. Brilliant. Vinous (90+)
Good deep, bright red. Liqueur-like aromas of maraschino cherry, mint and soy sauce. Suave on entry, then tangy in the middle palate, offering complex flavors of red fruits, spices and mint. Finishes with a serious tannic spine that gives this wine a youthful austerity. I find a captivating savory character reminiscent of mushroom umami from the nose straight through to the aftertaste. Lay this one down for at least six or seven years.Inc. GSTSG$5,585.76 -
Wine Enthusiast (93)
All the proper structure of young Gevrey-Chambertin with the addition of rich, generous fruit. The core is of wood and dry fruit tannins, the fruit of rich black plum juice. At this stage, the wine is firm. Give it 5-6 years to open up.Inc. GSTSG$1,629.44 -
Jancis Robinson (17)
In hot vintages this site does not show the heat that much (13.2% approx). Barrel samples. Sample 1: from a new barrel racked to a new barrel (thus not representative of the finished wine) Deep and rich in dark-red fruit. Peppery, spicy and creamy too. But a bit dry on the finish because of the new oak. Sample 2: from a different barrel More open on the nose, still lovely dark and lifted fruit. More peppery. Juicier and more aromatic. Great finesse both in the fruit and the tannins. Super-elegant and while it has 2018’s characteristic dark fruit, it has 2017 freshness and finesse.Inc. GSTSG$6,374.82 -

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of mixed red and black fruit and a faint touch of tomato vine. It becomes more floral with aeration. The palate has fine structure, and there’s some clever stem addition apparent here, lending this Clos Saint-Jacques a subtle leafy character. Focused with fine weight toward the finish, this is very persistent and quite saline on the aftertaste. Reserved, but the pedigree is undeniable. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru comes from the "young old vines", around 25-years in age, and is 100% de-stemmed. It’s funny because on the nose, its spiciness implies there are some stems in this blend, well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, velvety opening. This is plush and seductive, quite Vosne-like in style, some new oak to be subsumed on the finish. I cannot help falling for this Gevrey and you might too.Inc. GSTSG$401.01 -
