The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, desiccated orange peel and a little rooibos. The new oak is quite prominent and feels a bit reduced. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy and muscular, perhaps missing some elegance and transparency. The firm finish leaves a spicy aftertaste. Give this three to four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Always served before Le Musigny and Les Amoureuses chez Roumier, this combines elements of both red and white soils across four separate parcels, all on the Chambolle-Musigny side of the Grand Cru. For all its texture and breadth, this has freshness and focus too with sapid red fruits, nuance and length. The oak needs a little time to fold into the wine, but who's in a rush with a Pinot like this?

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-100)

All three cuvées, white soil, red soil and the new plot, have been blended. Overall two-thirds of the blend comes from white soil Bonnes Mares. Two thirds whole bunch, one third new wood. Glowing rich purple, with a beautiful bouquet demonstrating exquisitely balanced fruit. Ripe of course but there are some red threads in with the darker fruit, fine acidity too, just a sumptuous covering of exquisite dark raspberry and a little touch of blackberry. Bravo! There is a lovely covering of flesh on top of natural vivacity.

Rich purple, with energy on the nose, more black fruit, a little less easy to read than the flamboyant Ruchottes. Two thirds whole bunch just visible. Showing the duality of this vineyard. More black than red, nothing in any way cooked, deep long and sultry, some comparison with Bussière but a much greater depth of generous fruity and of course very long indeed. Going to be spectacular I think. A really classic structure with a brilliant aftertaste. Tasted: November 2021

1.75 ha (4.3 acres). Higher vineyard than most, facing south-east but cool air comes down the combe. Terres blanches, ie limestone-rich marl. Low-vigour vines here. Theirs were planted 1931, some replanted 2002. 60% whole bunch, 25% new oak. Barrel sample. Deep crimson. Fabulous nose of ripe red fruit with the perfume of peony. Perhaps also a touch of lavender from the whole bunch. Wild flowers and still so much fruit. Much tighter and more strict than Les Combottes, the tannins more upright and less smooth but still very very fine. More stony. 14.2% but you would not know. And that mineral freshness and energy is outstanding even if the wine is less approachable than some. Rich in fruit, mouth-watering in texture and that minerality gives a tight frame to the fruit.

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes contains around 40% whole bunch this year. It has a very refined bouquet with dark, almost broody black fruit, a touch of cold granite and graphite, austere and yet blessed with exquisite delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with sorbet-like freshness on the entry, here more blue fruit than the Clos de la Bussière with an elegant, poised finish. The word that sprung to mind? Balletic.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Village is positively bulging with black and red fruit on the nose of dense blackberry and bilberry; a light marine influence surfaces with time. The palate is well balanced with firm, grippy tannins that feel more robust and slightly drier than the 2019 compared alongside. A little brusque on the finish at the moment; this will require time.

I have never been a huge fan of this wine as I often find it to be somewhat coarse, and while always very good, I am rarely moved by it. However, in 2010, as was the case in 2009, this is much better than it usually is with a relatively perfumed nose that includes notes of earth along with the natural sauvage character of the vineyard. In fact there is even a certain elegance to the attractively layered airy and cool red berry liqueur aromas. There is good richness and fine volume to the moderately robust and muscular flavors that culminate in a balanced and linear finish that evidences mild austerity. I quite like this as the tannins are finer than usual and there is a real sense of harmony and completeness.

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Véroilles 1er Cru has the richest bouquet with traces of cassis and raspberry fruit, intermixed with violet petals. This is showy and generous. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent sweet and fleshy candied red fruit, almost like a sorbet-fresh Grenache, but it is most definitly Pinot with a beautiful silky finish.

The 2009 Echézeaux wraps around the palate with layers of bright red fruit. This is a beautiful, vibrant 2009 with plenty of upper register notes and energy. Mint, sweet spices and raspberries wrap around the finish. The ripeness of the year comes through but that element is nicely balanced by the wine's focus and energy. My sense is that the 2009 will be even better once it drops some baby fat.

(64% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% petit verdot; IPT 74; 13% alcohol): Dark ruby. Deep, brooding nose hints at dark plum, blackcurrant, coffee and lavender accented by cinnamon and nutmeg. Enters bright and fresh, then turns richer in the middle, with accessible plum, herb and coffee flavors persisting nicely on the peppery finish, which features chewy tannins. This is at once more herbal and more forward than the 1995. It's also better than I remember it, and although still quite young it offers plenty of appeal. The wine's harmonious acidity makes it seem lighter-bodied than it is. About 40% of the malolactic fermentation was carried out in barriques, compared to a normal one-third. Note that the label states 12.5% alcohol, but the data given to me by the estate shows 13% alcohol.

Masculine and burly, the 2006 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque is an absolutely stunning effort that delivers explosive aromas of rusted iron, blood, and crushed rock that are supported by smoky, meaty dark fruits. Ripe and concentrated on the palate, with full bodied power and depth, perfect balance, and huge underlying structure and tannin the comes through on the finish, this is actually approachable now given the level of fruit and texture; however, this needs 8-10 years bottle age, and should drink well for decades!

The 2007 E. Guigal Hermitage Blanc Ex-Voto comes from 2 parcels, 90% from Les Murets, and 10% from L’Hermite, and is a blend of 90% Marsanne, and 10% Roussanne that spends 18 months in new oak casks. It exhibits decadent, rich aromatics and gets better and better with air, yielding ripe stone fruits, honeysuckle, buttered bread, and gorgeous background minerality and smoky notes. Full and round on the nose, the palate follows suit with a powerful, full bodied texture (that amazingly stays light and balanced), thick, rich fruit, and a focused, blockbuster finish that’s loaded with edgy minerality and wet stone. Jaw dropping good and this powerful, yet elegant beauty should drink well for 15+ years.

The 2020 Les Champs Libres is gorgeous right out of the gate. In this vintage Les Champs Libres is quite savory and floral, with the fruit pushed into the background. Dried flowers, mint, sage, white pepper and almonds all open with some time in the glass. Like the Grand Village Blanc, Les Champs Libres comes across as a bit reticent. I love the energy and vibrancy here. Give this time in bottle.

Not deeper in colour, perhaps just a touch brighter even than the village Vosne. An even finer detail, with more precision, still just a note too much of new oak. Broader shoulders, more structure behind, which tames the fruit and stops it getting soupy. An exceptional intensity of liquid raspberry with great persistence. Drink from 2027-2033.

The 1989 Haut Bailly is a vintage that I have tasted several times, and one of my picks from the pre-Wilmers era despite some bottle variation. This is a good example, displaying quite a muted nose initially, but unfolding to reveal lovely sandalwood and sage aromas. It is much more rustic compared to the same wine nowadays, yet seductive. The palate of blackberry, black olives and cracked black pepper is quite harmonious, with satisfying depth, and after three decades, it continues to show commendable energy. While it lacks a little length, this remains a delightful Haut Bailly. Tasted at a private dinner in London.

The Château Haut-Brion 1975 has been variable in the past, however this is one of the better examples with deep garnet color. The nose is lively with leather and scorched earth scents infusing the dusky black fruit, later a faint touch of terracotta coming through. The palate is well balanced, quite animally and feral for a respectable First Growth, but that is exactly what lends it its charm. There is just some dryness creeping in on the finish, so I would drink bottles over the next ten years or so. Perhaps given the quality of its sister La Mission Haut-Brion in this year, you would expect more, but it remains a delightful, self-effacing Haut-Brion that is best consumed sooner rather than later. Tasted July 2014.

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureses is sweet, layered and totally beautiful. At the same time, it is pretty clear the wine has already begun to shut down. With time in the glass, some of the typical weightless energy of Amoureuses comes through, but despite its considerable appeal, the wine is showing only a fraction of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2009 will enjoy a long drinking window once it awakens from its current slumber. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

Spicy and expansive on the strikingly long, sappy finish, which features resonating dark berry character and youthfully chewy tannins.

Vinous - Neal Martin (91)

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88+)

Modestly saturated medium color. Minerally. blackcurrant aromas with notes or brick, leather and cigar ash. Lovely, subtle flavor, but wrapped tight by sound acids; not yet showing its richness. Finishes quite firm. This would appear to have good aging potential and may be a sleeper.

Firm and concentrated with flavors that spread out on the palate. It's rich and woody, very structured and firm, packed with cassis and black cherry fruit and cedary tobacco. Offers an abundance of flavors in an elegant package. One of the finest Haut-Brions we've tasted.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, which includes 25% whole bunch fruit from vines that tend to suffer millerandage, offers vivacious dark cherry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, good focus and a mineral-infused finish that delivers a pleasant sour edginess. Excellent.

This impressive white wine from red wine specialist Charles van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat dispels the myth that one can’t do both. The aromas begin with a hint of lemon peel and white flowers and then opens up to encompass quince, hazelnut, and spice. The beautiful freshness of the year balances out the impressive concentration of the wine to lead to a surprisingly long finish. 2021 is van Canneyt’s fifth vintage of this wine, whose vines were previously worked by Domaine Coche-Dury.

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, for this writer, demonstrating a little more precision and mineralité compared to the Les Beaumonts. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more saline than the Les Beaumonts with a very persistent finish. Superb.

Bright, dark red. Pure but subdued aromas of raspberry, minerals, rose petal and flinty stone. Wonderfully suave on entry, then vibrant and sappy in the middle, with pungent raspberry and crushed stone flavors boasting outstanding density and freshness. Mounts impressively on the back half, finishing with outstanding lift and perfume and broad, fine-grained tannins that reach the front teeth. Exciting wine.
