Bright, pale, green-tinged yellow. Ripe aromas of mirabelle and nectarine, with an element of exotic spices. Fat, ripe and sweet, with an almost glyceral texture to the nectarine and pink grapefruit flavors. A fat, spicy wine with lowish acidity. This hail-affected parcel was picked at the beginning of the harvest owing to the more fragile grape skins, noted Bernard Billaud. Will make a fat and agreeable chardonnay, although with limited vineyard typicity.

  • Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 1985 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (99)

It’s almost impossible to imagine that the 1985 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva La Storica has just celebrated its thirty-sixth birthday. It displays a brilliant ruby red color and amazing clarity in the glass, with only the slightest bricking around the rim. The bouquet alone is enough to keep you at the edge of your seat, as if opening a cedar treasure box to find dusty rose and sour cherry offset by spiced orange, crushed dried sage and just the slightest hint of animal musk. This is total class, cool-toned and poised, seeming to hover across the palate with an air of red inner florals, as tart woodland berries mix with hints of black tea and lemon oils. There’s a bolt of nervous acidity that keeps the experience remarkably fresh, but also adds a highly attractive sweet and sour note. And finally, while structured and youthful in feel, it finishes completely fresh, vibrant even, with dried currants enlivened by nuances of grapefruit and mint that linger on and on. This is an experience wine in every sense of the word, hailing from a dry and warm harvest yet exemplifying the purity of Sangiovese, as well as its ability to mature for well over three decades. The 1985 La Storica comes directly from the winery’s aging vault, and it was reconditioned with a new cork in 2000.

(fut E03) Saturated red-ruby. Noble, compelling, superripe aromas of black raspberry, meat, mocha, flowers, white pepper and bitter chocolate. A powerful, muscular style, with a saline impression of extract and tangy fruit and mineral flavors. Quite fine and restrained, but, as with Bizot other '99s, the combination of oaky torrefaction and Bizot's practice of vinifying with the stems has the effect at present of slightly drying the finish. But this is a highly promising set of '99s.

The nose definitely has some age on it, smoke, walnut, linseed and beeswax, then a tinge of shiitake mushroom with further aeration but maintaining great definition. We start with a side-by-side comparison of Bollinger’s 2002 and 2004 Vieilles Vignes Françaises, one of my favorite Champagnes. The 2002 is spectacular, as it always is. Rich, warm and resonant, the 2002 covers the palate with seemingly endless layers of burnished, honeyed fruit and the most finessed, subtle mousse imaginable. I don’t see the 2002 making old bones, but it is flat-out great tonight. The 2004, on the other hand, is disappointing. More advanced in its flavors and with quite a bit less structure than the 2002, the 2004 is already maturing and needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later.

(production was half of normal in 2016; aged in 30% new oak and bottled at the beginning of April of this year): Pale yellow-green. High-pitched aromas of citrus peel, menthol, lavender and white pepper. Extremely tight without coming across as austere, conveying striking purity to its bracing flavors of grapefruit pith, lemon and crushed stone. Adamant minerality gives this very dense wine terrific inner-mouth tension and yet there's an element of leavening sweetness here as well, not to mention compelling floral perfume throughout. This wonderfully smooth, rich yet weightless wine really dances on the palate, spreading out on the unflagging back end to saturate every square millimeter of the mouth. Cellarmaster Emmanuel Hautus compared this wine to the 2009 in its combination of richness, early appeal and potential longevity.

  • Bizot Vosne-Romanee 2018 (1x75cl)

    Burghound (89-91)

(Outstanding Top Value) An exuberantly spicy and attractively fresh nose combines both red and dark berry fruit aromas with those of violet, lavender and sandalwood that are trimmed in just enough oak to notice. There is fine energy and detail to the delicious and appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a refreshing and lingering finish where a hint of bitter cherry pit character arises. This is very Vosne in style and a wine that should repay mid-term cellaring.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Village is limpid crimson in hue. Vivacious scents of Morello cherries and blood orange mixed later with wild strawberry on the nose - very effervescent. The palate is quite structured, weighty for a Village Cru, gentle grip with a sorbet-like freshness on the finish. If you can ignore the stratospheric prices Bizot's wines fetch these days, this is undeniably absolutely delicious.

  • Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 1992 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Bottle number 904. A deep greeny/gold colour with fine, persistent mousse. The nose definitely has some age on it, smoke, walnut, linseed and beeswax, then a tinge of shiitake mushroom with further aeration but maintaining great definition. The palate is cerebral, complex, very intense, touches of apricot, dried fruit and a little truffle. Getting ever more intense on the glass, more and more honeyed. Drink now-2020+. Tasted October 2008.

Light gold with a steady bead of pinpoint bubbles. Deep, musky aromas of buttered toast, cherry pit, blood orange, lemon rind, pungent herbs and yellow rose, with mounting spiciness. Deeply concentrated but showing unlikely finesse, with firm, gripping red berry and citrus flavors and exotic notes of candied flowers and smoky lees. Intriguing for its blend of richness and delicacy; the endless finish repeats the spice and floral notes and lingers with impressive clarity and notes of honey, anise and minerals.

  • Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises 2004 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90)

    Vinous (95)

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is showing superbly from bottle, wafting from the glass with a complex and beautifully integrated bouquet of pear, citrus oil, toasted sesame, warm bread, oyster shell and white flowers. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a racy spine of acidity and superb concentration without weight, followed by a long, defined finish. Surpassing the high expectations I formed a year ago, this would appear to be the finest wine produced at Bonneau du Martray for over a decade.

  • Bouchard Pere & Fils La Romanee Grand Cru 1996 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

This magnificent wine offers a medium-to-dark ruby color and an extraordinary nose of perfume, violets, and a myriad of red fruits. I was blown away by this wine's combination of precision, femininity, focus, and jammy, candied cherries. Traces of sweet, vanilla-infused oak grace this wine's complex and concentrated, yet lace-like flavor profile. Medium-to-full-bodied and silky-textured, this wine also possesses a long, soft, gorgeous finish that leaves the taster yearning for more. Finally, a La Romanee worthy of its name!
