1997 |
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 1997 (1x150cl) Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)Deep ruby color. Less forthcoming aromas of black fruits, grilled nuts, violet and an exotic suggestion of apricot. Thick and concentrated; conveys an almost salty impression of extract. Very backward. Finishes with a strong tannic spine. Very strong juice, but doesn't yet offer the smoky complexity of the '96.

1998 |
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 1998 (1x75cl) Vinous (94)Full ruby-tinged red. Cool, complex aromas of black cherry, currant, camphor, tar, mint and violet. Sweet, dense and packed with fruit; large-scaled and lush, given shape by ripe acidity. More powerful than the Loreto, but the big, broad tannins are also extremely well buffered. Less expressive on the back end than the Loreto but shows outstanding length. Like the '97, this wine does not come across as especially oaky due to its sheer material.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ronchi 2006 (1x75cl) Vinous (92+)(from 60+-year-old vines facing southeast; aging included 20% new barriques Good full red. Spicy redcurrant aroma lifted by a note of rose petal. Juicy, spicy and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely cut and intensity and a firm tannic spine. Less lush today than the Loreto, and showing less early sweetness, but this elegant, juicy wine projects lovely nebbiolo perfume and has the structure for a graceful evolution in bottle. Rocca told me this vineyard features the family's own clones and was planted by his grandfather.

1997 |
Alvaro Palacios Priorat L'Ermita 1997 (1x75cl) Vinous (91-93)Bright ruby. Highly nuanced aromas of blackcurrant, pungent minerals and spicy, toasty oak. Large-scaled yet light on its feet. Terrific fruit carries through to a very long, ripely tannic aftertaste. Kept fresh and lively by a flavor of licorice and very good acidity. A great showing for a vintage with a modest reputation for red wine in Spain. Palacios used more heavily toasted barrels following the rainy harvest of '97, but eschews charred oak in richer years like '98.

2006 |
Amiot Servelle Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Derriere la Grange 2006 (1x75cl) Vinous (87-89)(50% new oak; these vines are now 70 years old, according to Elisabeth Amiot) Good full medium red. Musky cassis, blackberry and black cherry on the nose, along with a hint of torrefaction. Rich, suave and fairly full but classically dry, with firm minerality currently keeping the fresh fruit under wraps. This is actually quite closed now, and rather tannic on the persistent finish. Less sweet than the Charmes.

1995 |
Antinori Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne 1995 (1x150cl) Vinous (87)Solid fresh ruby. Sweet and spicy on the complex nose, with plum and cherry complemented by a note of chocolate. Good size and flavor on the palate; textured and persistent. But displays a slight dryness of tannins on the finish. A wine that could use some additional fleshiness and roundness. The first Antinori Brunello di Montalcino and, under the circumstances, a good one: the property was purchased in July of 1995, a date that obviously made it impossible to intervene in any meaningful way in the vineyard. Tastings of upcoming vintages strongly suggest that future vintages will be better.

2004 |
Antinori Guado Al Tasso 2004 (1x75cl) Vinous (92)The 2004 Guado al Tasso reveals a layered, nuanced texture filled out by the generous warmth of Bolgheri. Full-bodied and ample on the palate, it offers plenty of sweet dark fruit, licorice, Tuscan herbs and chocolate, with outstanding persistence as well as balance, which is especially evident in a mature use of oak. The 2004 is an opulent and beautifully poised Guado al Tasso that will offer much pleasure over the next decade.

Antinori Guado Al Tasso 2005 (1x75cl) Vinous (92)The estate's flagship wine, the 2005 Guado al Tasso, possesses gorgeous aromatics and a core of vibrant, dark fruit framed by finessed tannins. Medium to full-bodied, it shows superb balance, particularly in the use of French oak, something that I haven't always been able to say in the past. With air, attractive nots of wild herbs, smoke, minerals and sweet toasted oak develop to complete this very pretty Guado al Tasso.

Arlaud Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 (1x75cl) Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)Rich very deep purple. The nose shows nobility. Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (3x75cl) Vinous (89-91)The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from La Bussières, Les Herbues and two or three others. I love the delineation and precision here, very focused with a minerally undertow. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly peppery opening. You might misconstrue there being whole bunches thanks to the light peppery finish (there is nonw). It is a quality Village Cru from Arlaud that should give a decade pleasure of more.

Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 2020 (3x75cl) Vinous (87-89)The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed a little reduction on the nose, but there were some quite intense red fruit underneath that should blossom once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly toasty entry, fine depth and acidity with a slightly chalky finish that just needs a little more persistence. I think this year, Arlaud’s Morey-Saint-Denis Village has the upper hand.

2019 |
Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very pure and intense on the nose, a melange of black and blueberry fruit infused with pressed violet petals. The oak here is seamlessly integrated. The palate is opulent on the entry with black plum and boysenberry jam. There is a subtle confit element to this Charmes-Chambertin with grippy tannins on the finish that delivers a subtle bitter/sappy edginess.

Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl) Vinous (95-97)The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in 15% new oak, showed just a tiny morsel of reduction on the nose, that the concentration here was still tangible. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh and very precise. This has real class and verve, though it will benefit from several years in bottle.

Arlaud Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl) Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and 20% new oak. The superb bouquet presents a mélange of red and black fruit, sous-bois and blood orange aromas that blossom from the glass. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and finely judged acidity. Quite compact for a Clos de la Roche, with noticeable backbone on the finish. It will require several years in bottle but it should be worth the wait.

Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combottes 2019 (1x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru really captures the complexity and intellectual capacity of this propitious Premier Cru with beautifully defined, mineral-driven black fruit, touches of freshly rolled tobacco developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied with blueberry and cassis notes towards the sensual finish. It is a powerful Aux Combottes that just needs to evolve a touch more restraint and Pinoté, though that will develop with cellaring.

Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2019 (5x75cl) Vinous (92-94)The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is elegant and refined on the nose, a mixture of blackberry, sous-bois and a light sea spray aroma. It just needs to gel together and it should do during the remainder of its barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Very Morey in style with a sense of conservatism and linearity on the white pepper-dashed finish, I appreciate its persistence in the mouth. Cellar this for 4-5 years.
