Sustainable Fine Wine Investment Portfolio

The Cru Sustainable Fine Wine Portfolio comprises 20 different fine wines from 10 producers, all of whom have the highest sustainability credentials. The wines also have, in the view of Cru’s analysts, excellent potential to increase in value over the medium to long-term.

All of the wines in the portfolio have been awarded a ‘Green Emblem’ by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. This designation goes beyond simple organic or biodynamic production and is awarded only to producers who pursue “sustainability in every sense of this term, including community efforts toward long-term environmental health, biodiversity and/or efforts toward improving the larger social issue impacts of wine production.”

Cheval Blanc 2015 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cheval Blanc is still incredibly primary at this very youthful stage. With coaxing, it unfurls to reveal beguiling notions of ripe black cherries, mulberries, licorice, baking spices and smoked meats with touches of incense and potpourri plus wafts of cast iron pan and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, very rich, very firm/taut and with very ripe, fine-grained tannins, it allows a glimpse at its incredible depth of flavors with a very long multi-layered finish. Wow.

Cheval Blanc 2016 (6x75cl)

The Wine Independent (100)

The 2016 Cheval Blanc is a blend of 58% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and has a deep garnet-purple color. It needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock a powerful, profound nose of cassis, black raspberries, and stewed plums, followed by suggestions of Indian spices, fragrant soil, crushed rocks, and menthol, with a touch of violets. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright, energetic and gracefully styled, featuring youthful blackberry layers and loads of mineral and floral sparks, with a fine-grained, beautifully ripe texture, finishing long and earthy. Mind-blowing!

Cheval Blanc 2019 (6x75cl)

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (100)

The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a stunning, riveting wine. There is simply nothing like a great Cheval in all of Bordeaux. Soaring aromatics are immediately alluring. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, espresso and dried herbs build in a Cheval that possesses tremendous layers and exceptional balance. Clean, mineral notes lend tension and drive. The 2019 is a bit strict today and not ready to show all its cards, but it is very clearly a special, special wine in the making. In 2019, the Grand Vin represents 82.5% of the estate's production, a very high amount by any measure. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. The 2019 is an eternal Cheval Blanc.

Chiara Boschis (Pira) Barolo Cannubi 2018 (6x75cl)

Vinous (93)

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is soft, open-knit and gracious, as wines from this vintage tend to be. Silky contours and pliant fruit add to its appeal and overall immediacy. The 2018 is a real charmer. It's understated personality will be easy to appreciate upon release. Sweet red cherry, cinnamon, mint, cedar and dried rose petal linger nicely, with pretty sweet floral notes that continue to open over time.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Faraona 2018 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

The often-mysterious and ever-changing 2018 La Faraona comes from the vineyard called El Ferro, a very special plot ("I personally prune each single vine from La Faraona," Ricardo once told me. "She's mine!") of only 0.55 hectares that probably has 8% white grapes of the Godello and Jerez varieties. The vines are 72 years old on a very steep southeast-facing slope at 800 to 860 meters in altitude, and there is a tectonic fault that crosses the land and brings an unusual combination of elements and very shallow soils with the mother rock barely 30 centimeters down. The partly destemmed grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in an oak vat, and the wine matured in foudre and barrique for 12 months. The perfume coming out of the glass was simply mind-boggling, a subtle and complex combination of flowers, herbs and spices that had taken me to different places (often the Loire) in the past, but this time it took me to the green and humid slopes of the Bierzo, the wet soils and the Atlantic smell of the ferns and moss. This is the most Atlantic of the 2018s. It has freshness and lightness but also lots of energy and light. It has great purity, a very strong sense of place, and it encapsulates the humid slopes of Corullón like no other. This is nothing short of amazing. Ricardo told me this has been the only vintage of La Faraona where the wine was harmonious all the way, starting from the grapes, which gives me an idea of a wine that is going to show and drink nicely throughout its life. It's different from the 2014, which was from a cooler year, but this is every bit as good. 1,666 bottles, 54 magnums, 10 double magnums and six jeroboams were filled the 22nd of January 2020. They've been regrafting a good percentage of the white vines to red for eight years.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios Faraona 2021 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (98-100)

They harvested the 2021 La Faraona in four different tries, and the result is only two barrels, because the slow ripeness and cold exposure meant the grapes were not ripening and they thinned the crop to leave only the bunches that they thought the plants were going to be able to ripen properly. The vinification was more normal, similar to other years, but the wine has incredible depth and complexity. Despite having similar alcohol to the rest of the 2021s (13.7% in this case), La Faraona feels fuller and rounder, less austere and showier. It's terribly sapid. The very limited volume will mean an incremental increase in price.

I had already tasted the 2021 Moncerbal from barrel and found it extraordinary, so I was looking forward to this sample again. It has the bramble freshness (sometimes reminiscent of the 2013s) with good weight. It's medium-bodied with very fine tannins and pungent flavors of flowers and freshly cut grass. A great Moncerbal in the making.

Domaine Leroy Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2015 (3x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

The 2015 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from Domaine Leroy is one of the most magical wines to be found in Burgundy in this vintage, soaring from the glass with a bouquet of kaleidoscopic complexity, featuring notes of rose petal, blood orange, potpourri and bright berry fruit, with only hints of the savory complexity to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and extraordinarily multifaceted, with immense concentration, incredible energy and a long, resonating finish. Both more elegant and more reserved than the gloriously dramatic Richebourg that followed it, this is a profound Romanée-Saint-Vivant.

This latest incarnation of the famous brand is a superb wine. It is on par with, maybe even better than, the already legendary 2002. Its balance is impeccable: Apple and citrus flavors working with the tight minerality to give a textured yet fruity wine. Produced from Roederer's own vineyards which are mainly biodynamic, the wine has its own intense purity and crispness. It has amazing potential and is likely to age for many years. Drink from 2020.

2013 is a dynamic wine with an exquisite salty and chalky expression on the finish. While the perfume is not as reticent as the palate there is still a mesmerising scent of strict citrus notes and faint nuttiness. There is arresting purity and drive here in fact a sip leaves one out of breath, such is the complexity on offer and the time taken for the palate to compute what is happening.

The 2014 Cristal is another in a long line of gorgeous wines from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. A dazzling, vibrant Champagne, the 2014 impresses with a stunning combination of fruit density and linear energy that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of 2012 and 2008. At times, the bubbles feel totally wrapped up in waves of creamy, resonant fruit to the point the mousse is barely perceptible, especially with aeration. The flavors are bright and finely sculpted, leaning very much into the citrus, floral and mineral end of the spectrum.

Wine Advocate (100)

Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Pontet-Canet is a little shut down to begin, but with coaxing this baby is soon firing on all cylinders with a full-throttle nose of chocolate-covered cherries, crème de cassis, boysenberries and spice cake plus tons of kirsch and cranberry sauce sparks and a beautiful undercurrent of emerging tertiary characters: cigar box, sandalwood, chargrill, truffles and cast iron pan. Full-bodied, rich, multilayered and completely seductive, the palate is charged with incredible energy, with a firm backbone of velvety tannins and seamless freshness providing solid grounding and promising a very long life ahead. It finishes with an incredible display of epically long-lasting flavor fireworks. Wow!

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Pontet-Canet is a little tired on the nose, giving up notes of balsamic, roasted nuts and fallen leaves over a core of raisin cake, spice box and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is a little flat and chewy with a racy backbone and a stewed tea finish. Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (100)

Pure perfection, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello is a sensational effort from this estate that should be snatched up by drinkers and collectors. Based on 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was brought up mostly in new American oak, this saturated purple-hued beauty is legendary Monte Bello in the making and has a stunning yet primordial bouquet of crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, chocolate, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied, incredibly powerful, and one of the most concentrated versions of this cuvée ever made (I've had most of them), it needs a solid decade of bottle age and will have 50-60 years of overall longevity. Despite the long drinking window, it offers plenty of pleasure even today. I followed this bottle for two days and it showed best right out of the gate, closing down and becoming more brooding and backward with air. It's an incredible wine that I promise you won't regret having in your cellar.

Vinous (95)

The 2020 Columella is matured for 12 months in regular barriques with 10% new oak and 12 months in foudres. Dark berry fruit, black tea and light tobacco scents, this is finely tuned and focused, just pure class. You cannot ignore the pedigree here. The palate is beautifully balanced with pliant tannins, very sensual and silky smooth in texture, hints of white pepper and thyme developing in the glass. Dry and very focused on the finish. This constitutes one of the finest Columella's that I have tasted.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2008 (6x75cl)

Wine Enthusiast (100)

This latest incarnation of the famous brand is a superb wine. It is on par with, maybe even better than, the already legendary 2002. Its balance is impeccable: Apple and citrus flavors working with the tight minerality to give a textured yet fruity wine. Produced from Roederer's own vineyards which are mainly biodynamic, the wine has its own intense purity and crispness. It has amazing potential and is likely to age for many years. Drink from 2020.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2013 (6x75cl)

Matthew Jukes (19.5)

2013 is a dynamic wine with an exquisite salty and chalky expression on the finish. While the perfume is not as reticent as the palate there is still a mesmerising scent of strict citrus notes and faint nuttiness. There is arresting purity and drive here in fact a sip leaves one out of breath, such is the complexity on offer and the time taken for the palate to compute what is happening.

Louis Roederer Cristal 2014 (6x75cl)

Vinous (98)

Pontet Canet 2009 (6x75cl)

Wow!

Pontet Canet 2010 (6x75cl)

Wine Advocate (100)

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Pontet-Canet is a little tired on the nose, giving up notes of balsamic, roasted nuts and fallen leaves over a core of raisin cake, spice box and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is a little flat and chewy with a racy backbone and a stewed tea finish. I’m not sure this was the best bottle of this wine, so I will give it the benefit of a doubt with a question mark.

Wine Enthusiast (100)

A voluptuous wine, this is rich and fruity yet properly balanced by a magnificent structure. Pure, crisp and packed with a black currant flavor, this will be a remarkable wine as it develops. Still young, it needs many years to develop. Don't think about drinking before 2025.

Sadie Family Columella 2020 (6x75cl)

Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 (6x75cl)

Vinous (88)

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon shows good up front fruit, but that fades pretty quickly, ultimately exposing a compact mid-palate and abrupt, drying finish. This is a fine record of the year, but there is no way to get past the significant challenges 2020 posed.
