Vinous (92)Apple seed and wet stone on the nose anticipate a somewhat austere palate impression, though fortunately not one lacking in fresh apple and pear juiciness. The feel here is subtly waxy. Fruit skin chewiness lends invigorating tang to a finish whose simultaneous richness seamlessly perpetuates the wine’s midpalate impression, and to which alkaline and stony notes lend fascinating counterpoint. Not for the first time, I prefer the exuberance and sheer sensual appeal of the ostensibly lesser “Porphyr” bottling, but time may bring an extra measure of depth to this Höllberg. |

Wine Advocate (94)One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port. |

James Suckling (96)Very complex with dried flowers and roses. Full-bodied, very layered and tightly wound. Chewy and powerful. Firm and off-dry. Needs five or six years to soften. Beauty. Try in 2024. |

Decanter (100)A ‘field blend’ from deep-rooted, horse-ploughed, 80- to 100-year-old vines at two of Warre’s leading quintas, Cavadinha and Retiro. Tiny yields from an outstanding and widely declared year. Deep and opaque with glorious minty-ripe aromas, this already sings from the glass. Concentrated and multi-layered berry fruit backed by the super fine-grained tannins, finishes with a flourish – a ‘wow’ of a wine. Drink now or keep it another 30 years or more. Only 2,400 bottles declared to commemorate the 350th anniversary of Warre. |

Tim Atkin MW (95)Often among my favourite Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignons, this textbook Helderberg red was blended with 3% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc in 2017. Scented, refined and effortlessly dense and complex, with aromatic 30% new wood, mocha, cedarwood and cassis flavours and a long, balanced, herbal finish. 2022-29 |

Tim Atkin MW (96)You can almost count the good producers of Sangiovese outside Italy on the fingers of one hand, so well done Waterford for the impressive first release of this blend with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Herbal and spicy, it has aromas of pine and rosemary, succulent red berry fruit, classic Italian acidity and savoury tannins and stylish second and third use wood. 2021-27 |

The Weingut Dreissigacker Bechtheimer Riesling 2019 exemplifies the pinnacle of Rheinhessen viticulture. Grown on the sun-drenched slopes of Bechtheim, each vine benefits from the region's unique Schium terroir, imparting a distinct minerality to the grapes. Hand-harvested with meticulous care, the Riesling undergoes cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve its vibrant acidity and delicate floral aromas. Fermentation is carefully managed to maintain its elegant fruit profile, followed by ageing on fine lees to enhance complexity and texture. Esteemed for its balance, the 2019 vintage reveals notes of green apple, citrus zest, and subtle mineral undertones, culminating in a crisp, refreshing finish. Crafted by the renowned Dreissigacker family, whose dedication to sustainable and traditional winemaking practices ensures a wine of exceptional character and finesse. Ideal for pairing with seafood, Asian cuisine, or enjoying on its own, this Riesling is a testament to fine German winemaking. |
