Tokaj
Tokaji is one of the world’s great heritage wines. The sweet Aszú wines from Tokaji are recorded in history as far back as 1571. In fact, the most expensive bottle collector Thomas Jefferson ever bought was not a Lafite but a sweet wine from Tokaji. The magic of Tokaji is the region’s position at the convergence of two rivers. These rivers encourage early morning mists to drift across the vineyards, providing a perfect environment for botrytis (“noble rot”) to flourish. The vines have such low yields that one vine can often yield only one glass of wine! The Aszú grapes are picked, crushed and fermented in large Hungarian oak barrels with natural yeasts. This is a highly traditional method of wine-making which has not changed for centuries.
The uniquely exciting thing about top-level Tokaji is its incredible freshness, which balances out the natural sweetness. If you taste a top Tokaji next to Château d’Yquem you immediately feel the difference across your palate. These are exceptional wines, made in tiny quantities with incredible skill, and they are massively in demand.

The 1993 Tokaji Essencia was a miniscule maiden release of 400 bottles, so this is now extremely rare, a handful remaining in Mád. It contains 580 g/l residual sugar and 18.1 g/l acidity. There is a slight turbidity here, as it is believed that the 1993 did not go through a precise clarification. It has a slightly more tertiary nose, revealing hints of damp loam that percolate through the fig, date and marmalade scents. Later, there is a subtle estuarine element. The palate is surprisingly light on its toes, with fine tension and vitality. High acidity maintains a sense of energy, though this just tapers towards the finish unlike and leaves a slightly bitter residue.Inc. GSTSG$3,231.41 -

The 1999 Tokaji Essencia contains 552 g/l residual sugar and 17.7 g/l acidity, with slightly elevated alcohol though it still clocks in at just 2.9%. This displays a dark amber hue like the 2000, although it does not possess quite the same degree of complexity: fig and sloes, a little smoke and elements of dried flower. The palate is marvelous and in some ways has aged better than the aromatics. It is beautifully balanced and very pure, again with fig, marmalade and a touch of prune. The acidity keeps everything fresh and balanced, though perhaps the 2000 has a tad more precision on the finish. Just a lovely Essencia.Inc. GSTSG$3,197.91 -

The 2007 Tokaji Aszu Betsek 6-Puttonyos is nicely defined on the nose with scents of orange-blossom, Clementine, creme brulee and just a hint of jasmine. The palate is very well-balanced with a viscous core of honeyed fruit pierced by perfectly judged acidity that counterbalances the 183 grams per liter of residual sugar. It segues into a spicy, animated finish with hints of white pepper lingering on the aftertaste. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$646.06 -

The 2007 Tokaji Aszu Birsalmas 6-Puttonyos comes from one of the most famous vineyards in Tokaj. It has an intriguing bouquet, admittedly not one of the most immediate from the Royal Tokaji Company. It seems broodier, with resinous scents such as melted candle wax intermingling with dried honey and tree sap aromas. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry. It just glides across the mouth, the acidity nigh perfectly judged, and it gently builds to a lovely finish of marmalade, orange rind, quince and a touch of toffee that, to quibble, feels ever so slightly cloying.Inc. The 2007 Tokaji Essencia contains 560 g/l residual sugar with 10.1 g/l acidity, a total production of 2,057 bottles. I have tasted the 2007 once before, though that was several years ago. Clear amber in colour, it has a fabulous, showstopping nose with stewed apricots, mandarin, Anjou pears and marmalade all delivered with stunning delineation. The bouquet has not moved much in recent years. The palate is incredibly unctuous in texture and literally lacquers the mouth. It is intense and compelling with notes of Seville orange, yellow plum and a background spiciness. Boasting incredible purity and a length that has to be tasted to be believed, this vies with the 2009 as the greatest Essencia that the Royal Tokaji Company has ever made.Inc. GSTSG$5,067.37 -
Wine Advocate (97)
The latest release, the 2008 Tokaji Essencia from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company, was tasted over a period of three days. It is clearly cut from a different cloth to the 2007, disproving the idea that wines of such extraordinary sweetness conform to type. It is lighter on the nose than the 2007, with freshly cut tangerines, apricot and orange zest. There is a brightness here, a sense of energy. The palate is founded upon energy and tension, a silver thread of acidity that cuts through the layer upon layer of orange zest, Japanese yuzu, tangerine and honey. This is an elegant and you might argue, more reserved Essencia compared to the 2007. The alcohol is slightly higher at a whopping 4%, a relatively easier Essencia to consume compared to the unctuous previous vintage. While it might not achieve the concentration of the 2007, the 2008 Essencia remains an otherworldly feat of nature. I actually shared the remaining bottle with winemakers from Argentina and Portugal in Hong Kong and they became wide-eyed with amazement. That's the magic of Essencia. It might constitute blasphemy, but the freshness means you can enjoy this now, or as my drinking window suggests, wait another 100 years, as temporally fantastical as that sounds.Inc. GSTSG$660.89 -

(6x50cl) 2003Revered for its exquisite composition and exceptional quality, the 'Szepsy Szamorodni 2003' is an exalted Tokaji wine produced by the esteemed vintner, István Szepsy. Hailing from the prestigious wine region of Tokaj, Hungary, the Szepsy Szamorodni 2003 stands as an epitome of meticulous viniculture and embodies the rich terroir effortlessly. The blend engages Furmint and Hárslevelű grapes, naturally nobly rotten, refining the taste with an opulent sweetness. With a dedicated focus on tradition, Szepsy vinifies the yield in oak barrels lending complex undertones of honey, dried fruit and a hint of spice. The end product, Szepsy Szamorodni 2003, is an aromatic symphony, boasting a sumptuous palate and remarkable vintage character. This 2003 vintage is highly praised by notable wine critiques for its concentrated palate, balanced acidity, and long-lasting finish. Owning a character that is truly memorable, Szepsy Szamorodni 2003 is a testament to Szepsy's innovative winemaking legacy.
