Mosel

The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

Vinous (92)

Moss, wet stone, alkali and woodsmoke make for a highly distinctive as well as pungent aromatic alliance, though there are also scents of lime, grapefruit, mango and apple, which anticipate the juicy profusion featured on a subtly creamy, palpably dense yet buoyant palate. A hint of almond supplements the appeal of a bell-clear, lingering finish delightfully poised between lusciously fruity and intriguingly mineral elements. As usual chez Zilliken, high residual sugar – in this case, 58 grams – is almost magically canceled out in a delicious equation. (This year, due to paucity of grapes and to the fact that their best yields were in the oldest vines that tend to be showcased in single-vineyard bottlings, the Zillikens rendered no village-level Saarburger Kabinett.)

Ripe apple, quince and honeydew melon are seductively garlanded in honeysuckle and peony as well as backed by wet stone on both the nose and the polished, buoyant, luscious palate. The lingering finish is animating, consummately refreshing and mouthwateringly salt-suffused. Once again, here is a Zilliken Riesling that looks on paper like a Spätlese destined to taste overly sweet, yet manages to come off as only subtly so, while offering at least good arguments – even if some tasters will be unconvinced – for its having been labeled Kabinett.

Vinous (94)

This auctioned Spätlese is exceptionally clear and buoyant, with a much more northerly and less tropical fruit presence than I had anticipated. Suggestions of white currant put me in mind of the Ruwer and add to the tang and brightness already conveyed by coolingly mint-tinged lime, grapefruit, quince and white peach. Subtle creaminess of feel is allied to animation and refreshment, palpable density to utmost levity. Zilliken points to suggestions of dried fruits here that reflect lightly desiccated but healthy berries (which the picking crew was asked to favor and place in a separate bucket from fruit for the “regular” Spätlese), but I must say I find at most hints of that on the nose, whereas infectious juiciness conveys a luscious, compelling impression of freshness on the palate. The vibrantly sustained finish is strikingly transparent to stony, smoky, saline and bittersweetly floral nuances.

Vinous (92)

Once one knows Hanno Zilliken’s unique approach to numbering his wines, one will recognize that – by no means for the first time – his auction Spätlese originated with higher-Oechsle and generally more concentrated fruit than that which informed the lightest Auslese (this year, the A.P. #5). There is density and blazing brightness here, nearly equal to that of the aforementioned Auslese, but there’s also a slightly more playful and nuanced complexity. Yellow plum, white peach, grapefruit and lime are tinged with mint and smoky black tea on the nose and firm palate, and stony and mouthwateringly saline notes add impressively and appealingly to a vibrantly sustained finish.

Vinous (92)

This wine was raised in a five-year-old fuder with the intention of lending some structure and some pushback to its sweetness – and there is indeed a lot of sweetness here, pushing things in a syrupy direction. Quince and pear jellies and glazed pineapple dominate on the nose and the viscous, glycerol-rich palate. Happily, there is a lovely sense of lift despite the wine’s sheer concentration. Hints of zest from candied citrus peels as well as of resin from barrel add to the counterpoint supplied by tangy pineapple core on a finish of formidable persistence. And one hopes that there will be further diversity as well as a counter to the sweetness as this wine evolves in bottle. It originated with a 117-Oechsle must, and Hanno Zilliken even referred to it as a “super Auslese,” adding with a smile, “one that lent itself to offering as our auction Spätlese.” And he readily admitted that the estate has never before marketed as Spätlese any wine this concentrated and from fruit this high in must weight. (Readers already familiar with the Zillikens’ unique approach to registration numbers will recognize that this wine’s A.P. #7 implies not just that they deemed it superior in quality but also that it reflects a higher must weight than do three wines – the A.P. #s 8-10 – that were labeled as Auslese.)

The 2015 (Saarburg) Rausch Riesling Spätlese (AP #8) has a very clear and slightly flinty nose with very aromatic ripe fruit aromas and some grapefruit flavors. Pure, fresh and piquant on the palate, this is a remarkably fine and frisky, very elegant and persistent Spätlese with fine grip and lingering minerality.
