Douro

The ancestral home of Port. This northern region of Portugal takes its name from the Douro river which flows from the Spanish border down to Oporto where it meets the Atlantic. The Douro Demarcated Region is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world and stretches from the Marao mountains up to the frontier with Spain. Although best known for its fortified wines, Douro’s total wine production is fairly evenly split between Port and non-fortified table wines.

Wine Advocate (97)

The just-bottled 2023 Coche, their grand cru, comes from two or three vineyards in the zone of Murça. It is more austere and cooler, produced like the Redoma Reserva but in specific barrels from specific forest and toast, 30% of them new. It underwent full malolactic and one year of élevage in these barrels, stabilized by keeping it four months in stainless steel. It was singing when I tasted it. It has the serious and reductive character that is a constant here, and it is spicy, smoky and flinty, with notes of cold smoke, dry flowers and herbal tea and a dry, serious and chalky mouthfeel. It reminds me of the great 2021, with austerity, contained ripeness and great precision and purity, pungent and long. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2024.

Wine Advocate (94)

The only Douro white from granite soils, the 2023 Tiara is a blend of Rabigato (all whites have a lot of Rabigato, which provides very good acidity), Códega de Larinho, Donzelinho, Cercial and other varieties (perhaps some Alvarinho too) from very old vines at 600 meters in altitude. It fermented and aged in old, neutral oak foudres (1,300 to 2,500 liters) to give it a crystalline and pure character. It has austerity, contained ripeness and a balanced mouthfeel, with the granite granularity and a salty twist. It's surprisingly expressive for its young age, and it feels harmonious even after a very recent bottling. It feels like the 2023s are quite approachable. This is characterful, with a mixture of savory, floral and herbal notes, super tasty and pungent. It has terrific balance and is approachable but should also age. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2025. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered, perhaps that's why it feels so expressive.

Decanter (98)

A field blend featuring Arinto, Rabigato, Códega de Larinho, Viosinho and others, from vines at least 80 years old planted on schist at 600m in the Douro DOC. It was made (and the grapes were picked) to prioritise freshness, structure and minerality. A pioneer of Douro whites since the mid-nineties, Niepoort’s trademark precision and finesse shines, even in this century’s driest vintage. Sarah Ahmed: Toasty/charry oak and lime oil to nose and palate. Zesty, nutty with leesy complexity and hazelnutty oak. Showing lots of layers already. Nelson Guerreiro: Stone fruit, apple and pear nose with spice and a hint of vanilla. Medium bodied with a waxy side, balanced with a pleasant finish. Joanna Locke MW: Poised, with a strong seam of minerality and mouthwatering acidity. A smart wine with great potential.

The white 2023 Redoma Reserva Branco unfurls layers of added complexity tasted next to the Redoma Branco from this same vintage. They use older vines for this, a selection of vineyards from the zone of Murça, a sort of premier cru if you like. It fermented and matured in used and slightly younger barrels for nine months. It comes in at 12.5% alcohol and is spicy, floral and herbal, with notes of green tea and pollen, a smoky twist and a balanced and streamlined palate with fine minerality, fine-grained and with a dry, tasty finish. There are 35,000+ bottles, the biggest crop ever. It was bottled in July 2024.

The first words I wrote in my tasting book were, ‘best Chryseia to date’. This is an incredible wine with so much character and accuracy it is impressive. I have visited this property and felt the aura emanating from these historic vineyards. This wine manages to bottle these mysterious elements allowing them to embed themselves into the intense, majestic and deeply fruited body of the two Touriga grapes. While this will be a long-lived wine, there is no doubt that it will appeal to impatient palates, too, given its tremendous and immediate appeal. I feel that this famous wine label is finally showing its full potential, and it has joined the pantheon of truly great red wine styles of the world in the 2018 vintage.

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2018 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 to 18 months, depending on which of two plots, in 90% new oak. It comes in at just 14.6% alcohol. More flavorful and aromatic than its sibling, the Touriga Franca, this is otherwise along the same lines. This Touriga Nacional maintains the Franca's mid-palate finesse, as well as the feeling it projects that it is the crushed essence of the grape. There's a little oak present, but not as much as you might think. This, too, will absorb the oak even better with a couple of years in the cellar, but the wood is very well handled. It is not really intrusive even now, and there is no "drenched in vanilla" demeanor at all. The tannins are very ripe, but with aeration this becomes much firmer on the finish, proving that it has the structure to age. Of all of Crasto's upper-level wines this report, it is probably this that most leans to hedonism, thanks to the aromatics and flavor, yet it is still very elegant and carefully crafted. It is never a sloppy fruit bomb. This succulent and enticing Touriga Nacional is impossible to resist, even today, but you will definitely be rewarded if you give it a few years of age to become more expressive. There were just 9,113 bottles produced, plus some larger format bottles.

Made only in top years from the best lots, like all Noval's reds this is fermented in stainless steel then aged in French oak - in this case for 10 months in 35% new oak. Signature orange blossom riffs make for a delicate interplay of fruit and flower. A plume of fine, schistous tannins and bright acidity gently but persuasively anchor and extend its inky, perfumed black berry and plum fruits, with hints of bergamot, milk chocolate, clove, cedar and cinnamon. The backward and undeveloped 2022 Quinta do Vale Meão has all the baby fat, the spicy oak and the tannins that call for time in bottle. The toast from the barrels is still quite noticeable, but the palate is easier to read. Although the tannins did not quite reach the refinement of those from 2021, they were fine enough, abundant and still raw. The wine finished with a moderate 13.3% alcohol. Always selected from their oldest plots, the blend this year is 60% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 5% Tinta Barroca and 5% Tinta Roriz matured in 225-liter French oak barrels, 45% of them new. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.

This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The1975 is soft, supple and clearly mature.

One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port.

Wine Advocate (86)

This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop, and while they never quite have the voluptuous richness of a Dow, Graham, or Fonseca, they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The1975 is soft, supple and clearly mature.

Wine Advocate (94)

One of the finest Warres I have ever tasted, this opaque purple-colored wine is made in a drier style (a la Dow), yet it is expressive, extremely full-bodied, with superb richness, purity, and well-integrated alcohol and tannin. It possesses a great mid-palate as well as impressive length. Tasters should take note of the wealth of peppery, licorice-scented and flavored raspberry and blackcurrant fruit. Look for it to be ready to drink in 10-12 years, and keep for 30+. This is a profound example of Warre vintage port.
