Viu Manent
About Viu Manent
Founded in 1935 by Catalonian immigrant Miguel Viu-García and his two sons, Agustín and Miguel Viu-Manent, Viu Manent had a humble beginning - bottling and selling their Chilean wine under the brand “Vinos Viu”. Miguel was only able to produce his own wines when he acquired the Hacienda San Carlos de Cunaco in Colchagua in 1966, giving him access to 150 hectares of vineyards planted to super-old, noble, pre-phylloxera vines (plus a winery!). Today, Viu Manent is managed by the third generation of the Viu family, who still own retain full ownership.
The estate has come to a huge distance since those early days, and is today considered a “name to follow” by Luis Gutiérrez at Wine Advocate:
“Viu Manent is one of the classical names in Colchagua. They have some of the oldest Malbec vines in Chile. The average production is three million bottles per year.” - Luis Guitierrez (1 Nov 2018)
Viniculture and their wines
Proudly staking a claim to be the first Chilean winery to bottle, label and market Malbec, Viu Manent released the first vintage of it flagship “Viu 1” in 2001. It is made from the best Malbec grapes from Block 4 of the San Carlos vineyard, which was planted more than a century ago.
