Tua Rita
About Tua Rita
Founded by Rita and Virgilio in 1984, just as the Super Tuscan wave was taking off, Tua Rita started with just 2 hectares of Sangiovese and has now grown its acreage to around 30 hectares to include Bordeaux varieties and even Syrah.
With the rise of Sassicaia, it quickly became clear that Bolgheri was a region where international varietals could thrive. Tua Rita caught on and in 1988 added another 2 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to their holdings, some of which were initially sold to Sassicaia! The estate only began bottling their own wines in 1992 with the help of one of the best consultant oenologists in Italy, Luca D’Attoma. Together with the meticulous care and attention that Rita and Virgilio showered on their vines, Tua Rita quickly became one of the most successful Super Tuscans, standing toe to toe with the likes of Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia.

The 2017 Giusto di Notri is a special 25th anniversary bottling that is chiseled, sharp and focused. The small part of Merlot gives it some added sweetness (the percentage of Merlot was slightly reduced in this vintage), the touch of Cabernet Franc contributes the power, freshness and dark fruit, and along with a starring role of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has lots of beautiful plushness restrained by a tight, disciplined linearity. This vintage saw less time in barrique (about 16 months) but the barrels had more toasting. There is a lasting mineral note of chalk or limestone that frames the dark and opulence quality of fruit at its core. The bouquet is stunning. The wine treads lightly in the palate, with a very elegant and nuanced approach. It really is another gorgeous wine from Tua Rita that shows the profound skill of this winemaking team even when faced with a hot vintage such as this.Inc. GSTSG$384.55 -

A lean and light Sangiovese, the 2017 Perlato del Bosco has a great tonic freshness to it. Yields of this fruit were down by 40% in this hot vintage, an early harvest was scheduled in order to avoid any jammy notes. (The rest of the fruit that didn't pass the early selection at harvest went into some of the estates lower-tier wines, such as the Rosso dei Notri.) The result here is a fresh and crunchy red to match with a cheesy pasta such as cacio e pepe.Inc. GSTSG$446.29 -

This is a glorious young merlot with flowers, blackberries, hazelnuts and chocolate on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered and creamy with ripe and firm tannins. Wonderful depth and length. Better in 2022 and onwards, but already a glorious young red to try.Inc. GSTSG$518.62 -

The 2017 Syrah Per Sempre is aromatically deep and so expressive. As always, what comes through is a heady wine that captures the personality of Syrah on the Tuscan coast, and yet the 2017 also possesses quite a bit of nuance. Black pepper, lavender, spice and chocolate wrap around a core of inky dark Syrah fruit.Inc. GSTSG$694.48 -
