    Sami-Odi

    About Sami-Odi

No longer a stranger to any wine enthusiast, the meteoric rise of Sami-Odi began in 2018 when his flagship, Hoffman Dallwitz 2016 was placed Number Two spot in James Suckling’s Top 100 Wines of Australia, ranking just behind Hill of Grace and beating the likes of Grange, Astralis and The Caley.

The man behind this extraordinary label is Fraser McKinley, who was trained at both Torbreck and Standish. Fraser started moonlighting during his time at Torbreck finding his first sight, four rows of vines from a farmer called Hoffman. He initially started his own side project for educational purposes but quickly realised the potential of the sites that he was finding. Fraser now makes miniscule batches of the finest Syrah and most forward-thinking wines in the Barossa.

    Viniculture

McKinley has a very specific vision for his wine-making. He follows organic viticulture in the vineyard, and he trains the vines rigorously to allow earlier harvesting to retain natural acidity in the grapes. He also values the fine art of blending, using his skill to bring out the essence of vineyard sites, grape varietals and vine ages. McKinley is an artist with a canvass, creating vintage or varietal expressions and presenting them in unique bottle shapes and label designs.

    James Suckling (98)

The nose is incredibly perfumed and linear, with a freshness that has a lingering power and a brooding nature that will open up in years to come. Aromas of mulberries, graphite, iodine, wild blackberries and dried herbs. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with seamless tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of Damson plums, mocha, tobacco leaves, sandalwood, bark and graphite. Exceptionally balanced. Drink or hold.

    Halliday Wine Companion (98)

Fraser McKinley has nailed the cooler 2023 vintage with his Hoffmann Dallwitz release. It's essential; as in it presents itself as a pure essence of northern Barossa syrah with the characteristic Ebenezer compression and a sense of detail that only comes with an obsession for site expression and the craft of gentle winemaking. It's concentrated and presents with impressive fruit density, but there's a beautiful energy and freshness to its form. As always, the fruit is pure and perfectly poised; black cherry, blackberry, boysenberry and blue fruits. The cut of spice is deep and exotic, floral flecks and raspberry pip lift, a glimpse of dried herbs, dried meats and violets in the rear-view mirror with an earthen overtone with compact, powdery tannins as the wine fades out. Superb.
