Saint Prefert
Domaine Saint Prefert is a truly modern winery in a deeply traditional region. Approaching the building itself, one is immediately struck by the sheer avante-garde nature of the architecture. However the domaine itself is in no way a recent player on the stage in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. One of the first producers in the 1930s to make the leap out of the local market and into fine wine consciousness around the world.
Fast-froward to the present, under the guiding hand of Isabel Ferrando, Saint Prefert is one of the regions fastest rising stars and annually produces some very fine and long-lived wines indeed. Structured and elegant with many years ahead of it, the 2012 vintage was a great success at Saint Prefert, outperforming many of its more illustrious neighbours. This is a wine with easily another 10-15 years ahead of it and will reward careful cellaring.

Jeb Dunnuck (98+)Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years (although it certainly offers incredible pleasure even today) and will keep for two decades. Tasted twice. |

Vinous (96)Limpid ruby. Heady, spice-accented aromas of ripe red berries, incense and potpourri are complemented by a smoky mineral element that gains power as the wine opens up. Sweet, palate-staining raspberry liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors reveal hints of cola and white pepper. Conveys a suave blend of richness and energy and finishes with outstanding clarity, harmonious tannins and serious red-fruit-driven persistence. I greatly underestimated this beautiful wine from barrel. |

Vinous (95-96)Glistening magenta. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri and incense, along with smoky mineral and exotic spice topnotes. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated yet surprisingly energetic boysenberry, Chambord, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. The strikingly long, floral- and spice-driven finish shows superb delineation and fine-grained, harmonious tannins. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97)Tasted from bottle, the 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Colombis comes from a single lieu-dit and is 100% Grenache brought up all in demi-muids. I thought it could be the wine of the vintage last year, and it’s certainly not far off, offering a sensational bouquet of Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, spiced meat, and red and black fruits. Reminding me of a slightly toned-down version of the 2007, it’s full-bodied and has a beautifully layered, elegant texture, sweet tannins, and a gorgeous finish. The 2018s do not get much better than this, and this beauty can be drunk any time over the coming 15 years or more. |

Jeb Dunnuck (97+)The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Colombis comes from more sandy soils and is all Grenache raised in demi-muids. Wild strawberries, cherries, flowery incense, lavender, and loamy earth all make an appearance, and it's full-bodied, has a deep layered texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's another wine that needs a few years of bottle age, but it will deliver the goods over the following 15+. This is Grenache at its most elegant and seamless. |

Jeb Dunnuck (95)One of the whites of the vintage is the 2018 Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc, a gorgeous, rich, layered effort that stays perfectly balanced and pure. Classic notes of white flowers, honeysuckle, white peach, and ample minerality all give way to a medium to full-bodied white that has loads of texture, good freshness, and a great finish. This is a brilliant Châteauneuf Du Pape Blanc that makes a mockery of so many of the overly lean, fresh, so called elegant whites being produced today. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)A perfect wine that's up with the top handful of wines in this incredible vintage, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud (60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre) boasts a sensational nose of currants, cured meats, kirsch, exotic spices, and sandalwood. Deep, full-bodied and powerful, yet with an incredible sense of elegance and purity, it just glides across the palate and, despite its awesome intensity, it never seems heavy or over the top. Give it 2-3 years, and it will keep for two decades or more. |

Jeb Dunnuck (100)Even better (as well as a perfect wine), the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud checks in as a nominal blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was brought up in demi-muids. It reveals a deep purple color as well as heavenly notes of blackberry and currant fruits intermixed with loads of cured meats, spice box, Asian spices, and a distinct loamy soil and minerality. Always more structured and powerful than the Reserve Auguste Favier release (no doubt due to the Mourvèdre component), it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. Pure perfection in a glass, it’s as good as wine gets. Give bottles 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades. Hats off to winemaker Isabelle Ferrando for yet another thrilling wine! |

Jeb Dunnuck (99)The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Collection Charles Giraud includes a big chunk of Mourvèdre and is 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was partially destemmed and brought up in demi-muids. If offers a deep ruby/plum color as well as a rich, savory, complex bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spice, cured meats, and graphite. The Mourvèdre really shows in this beauty, and it's full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, yet never loses its seamless, flawlessly balanced profile. It's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age but will have 20-25 years of ultimate longevity. It's another thrilling wine from this estate. |
