Quinta Baixo
About Quinta Baixo
Few winemakers command as much reverence and respect within Portugal as Dirk Niepoort, arguably the country’s most important vigneron alive today. Amongst the onslaught of notable English families setting up Port houses in centuries gone by, the Niepoorts arrived from the Netherlands to add some Dutch perspective to the region’s fortified wines. Currently under the stewardship of its greatest, most passionate and dedicated leader, Dirk Niepoort stands as Portugal’s premier vinous personality, crafting exceptional wines wherever he deigns to apply his considerable skill.
Amongst his considerable achievements in Port, for which he is undoubtedly most famed, he is particularly enamoured with and enthusiastic about his lesser-known dry red project in Bairrada – Quinta Baixo.
Struck by the potential of chalky clay soils and the native Portuguese Baga grape variety, it is Niepoort’s belief that Quinta Baixo sits upon what may be the finest terroir in the entire country.
