Champagne Pol Roger
About Champagne Pol Roger
The son of a lawyer, Pol Roger began his vinous life as a merchant and importer. Founding his own champagne house in 1849, simply naming it “Roger”, the now legendary Maison began by making champagnes for other houses. As the business grew, his sons Maurice and Georges renamed the business “Pol Roger” to honour their father.
Viniculture
The prestige cuvée of the historic and prestigious Pol Roger was named in recognition of Sir Winston Churchill's devotion to their Champagne. Allegedly, he imbibed over 42,000 bottles during his lifetime - the reward for such an achievement (amongst others no doubt!) is, apparently, having one of the leading prestige cuvées in the entire region bear your name! The production of cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is much smaller than many of the other prestige Champagnes (just 20% the volume of Dom Pérignon). Because of this lower production level, mature vintages of Sir Winston Churchill are much rarer on the secondary market and carry a substantial premium.
Astonishingly, the level of Sir Winston Churchill produced is less than 1/5th of that of Dom Perignon. Thanks to that most lethal combination of excellence, fame and dramatically limited availability, mature vintages of Sir Winston Churchill are fleetingly rare on the secondary market, carrying very substantial premiums.

Crisp apples and tight minerality come together in a satisfyingly ripe wine. It is young, showing its fruity side and only just moving to its future complexity. But this will be a fine, structured Champagne. Drink from 2022.Inc. GSTSG$167.04 -

Pol Roger's 2008 Rosé Vintage is an impressively full-bodied, round and fruity as well as structured Champagne. Dressed in a beautiful salmon color, the 2008 opens beautifully clear, deep and fresh on the aromatic and spicy perfumed nose where red berry (raspberries!) and aromatic herbs are displayed. Full, intense and rich on the palate, this is an expansive, perfectly round, vinous and already accessible Champagne with power, structure and finesse. The finish is just excellent—fresh, with well-integrated acidity and a functional but not prominent mineral backbone.Inc. GSTSG$249.50 -
(1x75cl) 2012Jancis Robinson (17.5+)
Based on their Brut Vintage 2012 (60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay) to which is added 15% of still Pinot Noir from the best crus of the Montagne de Reims. Aged for six years in bottle before disgorgement. A relatively deep colour with a tomato (colour, not flavour) tinge. A really very opulent array of aromas. Serious grip on the finish. This is a serious rosé with ageing potential. Quite pungent and great balance. Very brisk and revitalising on the finish. Neat and long. This would be very happy at the table.Inc. GSTSG$254.24 -

Jancis Robinson (18.5)
Still pale gold. Very deep and sumptuous on the nose. Smells like a cross between red and white Côte de Beaune. Lots of lemon cream sensation and very fine bead. Explosive. Still tight and there’s lots yet to come but certainly capable of giving great pleasure now. You almost feel it needs decanting there is so much there! Not especially long. More Pinot than in the past.Inc. GSTSG$884.99 -

With its gold color and mature, toasty flavors, this is possibly the greatest Winston Churchill ever. It has weight and richness, with a dense, full and rich texture. It's in perfect balance, bringing together maturity and crisper apple and green plum fruit flavors that are cut with lemon. A mineral edge gives a nervy character that will allow this magnificent wine to age further.Inc. GSTSG$416.65 -

There is a wonderful biscuity aroma to this Pinot Noir-dominated Champagne. Named after the British war-time prime minister and an avid consumer of Champagne, the wine is mature, full of ripe yeasty flavors and concentration. The wine, from a great vintage, is at a perfect stage and ready to be drunk. But the wine will also age for many years, certainly until 2030.Inc. GSTSG$365.42
