Champagne Pol Roger
About Champagne Pol Roger
The son of a lawyer, Pol Roger began his vinous life as a merchant and importer. Founding his own champagne house in 1849, simply naming it “Roger”, the now legendary Maison began by making champagnes for other houses. As the business grew, his sons Maurice and Georges renamed the business “Pol Roger” to honour their father.
Viniculture
The prestige cuvée of the historic and prestigious Pol Roger was named in recognition of Sir Winston Churchill's devotion to their Champagne. Allegedly, he imbibed over 42,000 bottles during his lifetime - the reward for such an achievement (amongst others no doubt!) is, apparently, having one of the leading prestige cuvées in the entire region bear your name! The production of cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is much smaller than many of the other prestige Champagnes (just 20% the volume of Dom Pérignon). Because of this lower production level, mature vintages of Sir Winston Churchill are much rarer on the secondary market and carry a substantial premium.
Astonishingly, the level of Sir Winston Churchill produced is less than 1/5th of that of Dom Perignon. Thanks to that most lethal combination of excellence, fame and dramatically limited availability, mature vintages of Sir Winston Churchill are fleetingly rare on the secondary market, carrying very substantial premiums.

Wine Advocate (95)Great elegance and finesse already on the perfectly brilliant and aromatic nose shows Pol Roger's 2008 Blanc de Blancs Brut, displaying white and stewed apples with fine citrus flavors and discreet chalky aromas. The palate is dense and citric, as if limes and lemons are squeezed on a chalky rock. The purity, power and intensity is as remarkable, as is the finesse and persistence of the bubbles, the mousse on the palate and the long, persistent finish. Dosed with seven grams per liter, this extraordinary Blanc de Blanc Brut tastes drier than the Réserve Brut, but reveals a perfect ripeness of yellow fruits. The finish is lovely aromatic and intense, but also clear, fresh, firm and absolutely stimulating. This is a great Blanc de Blancs from the Grand Cru villages of Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger. |

Wine Advocate (93)Pol Roger's 2008 Rosé Vintage is an impressively full-bodied, round and fruity as well as structured Champagne. Dressed in a beautiful salmon color, the 2008 opens beautifully clear, deep and fresh on the aromatic and spicy perfumed nose where red berry (raspberries!) and aromatic herbs are displayed. Full, intense and rich on the palate, this is an expansive, perfectly round, vinous and already accessible Champagne with power, structure and finesse. The finish is just excellent—fresh, with well-integrated acidity and a functional but not prominent mineral backbone. |

Vinous (93)The 2015 Brut Rosé is compelling. Far from an easygoing Champagne, the 2015 Rosé possesses striking depth and layers of fruit that open beautifully with a bit of time in the glass. Crushed flowers, raspberry, blood orange, mint and spice all run through a substantial, super-expressive Rosé from Pol Roger that is ideally suited to the dinner table. Disgorged: November 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. |

Jeb Dunnuck (95)Made from 60% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, with 15% red wine from Les Riceys, the 2018 Champagne Vintage Brut Rosé pours a bright but deeper shade of pink with an orange hue and is forward with aromas of ripe raspberry, rose petal, orange peel, and a hint of spice. Medium to full-bodied, it has broad shoulders and a bit of tannic grip, with a fine mousse that fades to the background, allowing the wine's more serious side to show off its style. Chalky and powerful on the palate, with wonderful clarity and a long finish, it’s going to move into its more savory side with another couple of years in the cellar. It will pair well alongside roast duck and through the end of a meal. Drink 2025-2045. |

Wine Advocate (94)Pol Roger's just-released 2013 Brut Vintage is a beautifully chiseled, incisive wine that will appeal immensely to purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus zest, white flowers, crushed chalk and hints of fresh sourdoughs, it's medium to full-bodied, racy and precise, with a nicely concentrated and tightly wound core, tangy acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse. After the rich, muscular 2012 vintage, the 2013 represents quite a contrast; I'm not sure we'll see its stylistic like again for some time, so readers with classically inclined palates will want to stock up—advice I'll be following myself. |

All the elements are so nicely balanced. Disgorged: November 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. |

Jancis Robinson (17)Very tight, dense nose with some honey and orange notes on the palate. Already very drinkable with the acidity not especially noticeable, although presumably it will gain in aromatic complexity with bottle age. I found it less than enthralling when I first tasted it and gave it a score of 16.5 but when I was served a glass blind from my re-stoppered bottle a few days later, I was impressed. So is the lesson, don't rush your pleasures? |
