Paitin
About Paitin
Paitin di Pasquero-Elia is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Piemonte, first established in 1796 by Benedetto Elia who then purchased two hectares of Nebbiolo and Barbera vineyards in Bricco di Neive. Owned by the Pasquero-Elia family, Paitin’s wines consistently receive the highest praise from critics around the world. In 1948 Secondo Pasquero-Elia took over the winery and started replanting the vineyards. The oldest vineyard on the property, planted in 1953, now produces Paitin’s flagship wine ‘Barbaresco Riserva Vecchie Vigne’.

Vinous (94)The 2019 Barbaresco Basarin, here in its second release, is terrific. It shows a slightly dark fruit profile along with notable textural richness and a feeling of creaminess that is quite appealing. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. There's real depth and substance here. |

Jeb Dunnuck (93)The 2020 Barbaresco Faset lifts with a fruity nose of fresh strawberries, pressed roses, and sweet floral and herbal notes. One the palate, it offers ripe, savory tannins with a note of tea leaf and a slightly gamey, earthy texture and feel on the palate, with a bit of grip. Drink over the next 10-12 years. |

James Suckling (93)This is very silky and refined with chocolate, meat and coffee aromas and flavors, but it's so refined and beautiful. Impressive for its delicate complexity. Drink now or hold. |

Vinous (92)The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is bright, perfumed and very nicely lifted, with an attractive interplay of floral aromatics and textural depth. Mint, pine, kirsch, dried flowers and sweet tobacco are some of the nuances that emerge. The 2016 is tightly wound and classically austere in style, so it needs time in bottle to unwind, but it has undoubtedly fine potential. |

James Suckling (95)A vivid, solid Barbaresco with intense density of fruit and ripe tannins. It’s full-bodied with lots of plums and chocolate with some walnuts and bark. Extremely flavorful and powerful. Try after 2024. |

Vinous (90)The 2018 Barbaresco Serraboella is a very pretty wine. In this vintage, the Serraboella is quite ethereal in feel. Rose petal, orange peel, spice, mint and sweet dried cherry all lift in the glass. The Serraboella is a typically light to medium-bodied wine that reflects the modest depth of the year. |

Vinous (93)The 2019 Barbaresco Serraboella is fresh, floral and quite delicate. Bright acids lift a core of red fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper. Nervy and quite aromatic, the 2019 is super-impressive today. I especially like the mineral drive. Give this sinewy, taut Barbaresco a few years to soften. |

Jeb Dunnuck (94)A richer ruby in color, the 2021 Barbaresco Sori Paitin Serraboella has a great nose, with ripe and detailed aromas of fresh red cherries, wet stones, anise, dried roses, and fresh rosemary. The palate offers fantastic energy, with good richness of concentration, and it’s very well-balanced, with ripe tannins, salty earth, ripe but bright acidity, and a long finish. It is a very well-done wine from Paitin to drink 2026-2040. |

Vinous (89+)The 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin has lost a lot of the mid-palate depth it showed from cask last year. Sweet tobacco, licorice, dried herbs, dried cherries are some of the nuances that develop in the glass. Austere today, the 2015 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. The 2014 was bottled later than originally planned, which may explain why the wine lacks the fruit it showed from barrel. |

Vinous (88)The 2015 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin offers a bit more textural depth and resonance than the Serra Boella, but it, too, is quite marked by the personality of the year. Rose petal, hard candy, mint and crushed raspberry all develop in the glass. Grippy tannins provide a good measure of balance, but I am not sure there is enough fruit to support more than a few years of cellaring. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is another gorgeous wine from the Pasquero family. It has more power, depth and structure than the Serraboella, with a slightly darker tonalities of fruit and more tannic heft, but the differences between the two wines are not as marked as they can be. That’s what happens sometimes in warm, dry vintages – the differences between sites are baked out. Even so, the Sorì Paitin offers quite a bit of character. I would cellar it for at least a few years. |

Vinous (92)The 2018 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin offers good depth and plenty of grip, but there is no way of getting around the mid-weight structure of the year. Nervy tannins wrap around a core of red berry fruit, lavender, rose petal, spice and mint. I would give the Sorì Paitin a few years in bottle to soften, but imagine it will always remain a lighter wine by the estate's historical standard. It will be interesting to see where this goes. In 2018, there is no Vecchie Vigne; the best fruit was used here. |

Vinous (89)The 2015 Nebbiolo d'Alba Ca' Veja is laced with the essence of crushed raspberry, rose petal and mint. Light to medium in body and nicely lifted, the 2015 is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Soft, silky tannins add to the wine's finesse. This is very nicely done. |
