Domaine Michel Gaunoux
About Domaine Michel Gaunoux
A family estate that comes “warmly recommended” by Burgundy expert William Kelley (Wine Advocate), Domaine Michel Gaunoux remains one of “the region’s best-kept secrets”, producing “formidably structured wines” (WA) of which lovers of traditionally styled red Burgundy should take note.
The tiny 10 ha Domaine Michel Gaunoux comprises parcels in the "Corton Les Renardes" Grand Cru and several superb Pommard Premier Cru plots. The Domaine was founded by the Gaunoux family in 1885 and is now managed by Alexandre Gaunoux. Unique in that their wines can only be purchased post-bottling, much like Château Latour, they only release wines when they are deemed ready. Winemaking methods here are also very traditional, with late harvests, natural yeasts and ageing with minimal new oak.

The 2017 Beaune Village really over-performs this year, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice, orange rind, grilled ceps and peonies. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and enveloping, with fine depth and concentration, powdery structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. Combining substance with structural charm, this will offer a broad drinking window. As ever, this cuvée is a blend of premiers crus Boucherottes and Epenottes with the lieux-dits Prevolles and Beaux Fougets, so the raw materials are unusually serious for a communal bottling.Inc. Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, raw cocoa, woodsmoke and plums, the 2018 Beaune Village is medium to full-bodied, layered and charming, with an ample core of fruit framed by bright acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully chalky finish. Charming and refined, this will nevertheless merit more patience than the irresistible 2017.Inc. GSTSG$398.40 -

One of the highlights of this tasting was the 2013 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that bursts from the glass with a surprisingly expressive bouquet of wild berries, plums and spices, complemented by savory bass notes of dark chocolate, game bird and dried ceps. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with terrific concentration, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. The combination of ultra-refined tannins and mouthwatering cut makes for a very elegant style of Corton-Renardes this year, and it will delight Burgundy purists.Inc. GSTSG$1,182.00 -

The 2017 Corton-Renardes Grand Cru wafts from the glass with a complex bouquet of cherries, raspberries, forest floor, warm spices and a deft application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a deep and concentrated core of fruit, framed by racy acids and powdery tannins. The finish is long and penetrating. Unusually approachable for a Gaunoux Renardes, this is nonetheless constructed for a long and rewarding life.Inc. GSTSG$1,192.90 -

Like the Bourgogne there is a mentholated element to the ripe aromas of poached plum and mix of various red and dark cherry scents that convey a whisper of the sauvage. The highly seductive, indeed suave medium weight plus flavors that envelope the palate with sappy dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm tannic spine shaping the wonderfully long, dusty, austere and lengthy finish that also displays just a barely perceptible trace of warmth. Lovely stuff and in contrast to several of the preceding wines, this could be reasonably approached after 7 to 8 years though it should repay up to twenty.Inc. GSTSG$1,291.00 -

A fresh and ripe nose combines notes of plum and dark cherry with those of earth, subtle wood and a cool spice wisp. There is excellent underlying tension to the more mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that are at once sleek and detailed before culminating in a sappy, austere and built-to-age finish. Excellent.Inc. GSTSG$1,078.45 -

The 1999 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots is a stunning young wine that is still a decade away from full maturity but is already giving the full measure of its potential, exhibiting a superb bouquet of dark chocolate, ripe wild berries, rich soil, summer truffles and grilled ceps. On the palate, it's full-bodied, multidimensional and concentrated, with incredible depth and dimension at the core, framed by rich structuring tannins and concluding with a long and still youthfully chewy finish. This is the most powerful and broadest shouldered wine in this vertical of Grands Epenots, and it's a magical bottle in the making.Inc. GSTSG$2,379.97 -

The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots has also turned out beautifully, mingling aromas of cherries, raspberries and orange rind with nuances of peonies, smoked meat, grilled ceps and espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and enveloping, with terrific depth and concentration at the core, framed by lively acids and an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery structuring tannins. Like all Gaunoux's wines in 2017, this Grands Epenots marries seriousness with structural charm to very appealing effect.Inc. GSTSG$1,219.12 -

(Outstanding) Here too there is a discreet application of wood setting off the beautifully layered aromas of poached plum and spicy dark berries. The generously proportioned and appealingly refined medium weight plus flavors possess a suave and seductively textured mouthfeel while displaying outstanding length on the balanced and mildly austere finish where the only nit is the barest trace of warmth. This is arguably a bit more 2018 in style and a wine that should age gracefully for 15 to 20 years. In a word, terrific.Inc. GSTSG$1,081.78 -

A wine of grand cru depth and dimension even in this challenging vintage, the 2013 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens delivers a reserved bouquet of sweet red fruits, spices, candied peel and subtle espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with excellent concentration, satiny tannins and a long, chewy finish that's lent delineation by the wine's tangy acids. The only missing ingredient is time.Inc. GSTSG$1,039.27 -

More brooding than the Grands Epenots, the 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens unfurls in the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, black cherries, rich soil tones, peonies and dark chocolate, deftly framed by a discreet touch of oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a textural attack, muscular but velvety structuring tannins and a long, resonant and intensely sapid finish. This is a brilliant wine from Gaunoux, and one of the wines of the vintage along the Côte de Beaune this year.Inc. GSTSG$1,061.07 -

(Outstanding) A cooler and more elegant nose is dazzlingly pure with its elegant aromas of anise, essence of violet and rose petal, black cherry and an interesting hint of Asian-style tea. There is excellent power and underlying tension to the large-scaled flavors that possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exhibiting stunningly good length on the stony, detailed and compact finale.
