    Luciano Sandrone

    About Luciano Sandrone

One of the longest-lived and most imposing styles of fine wine on the planet, Barolo counts itself as the widely acknowledged “King of Italian Wines” - with good reason. Forged from the ancient hills of Piedmont and crafted from the iconic Nebbiolo grape, top cuvées are amongst the most desirable bottles in the world.

Beginning his legendary career at the famous Marchesi di Barolo, it was in fact whilst still working there that Luciano Sandrone produced his 1989 Barolo Cannubi Boschis, one of Piedmont’s most revered wines ever. Marked for immeasurable success since before this seminal vintage, Sandrone left in the Spring of 1990 to focus entirely on his own estate – a move the vinous world thanks him for!

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 1996 (1x150cl)

      Vinous (95)

Full red-ruby. Profound, multidimensional aromas of cherry, raspberry, cassis, lead pencil, camphor, mocha, tobacco and exotic spices. Extremely rich and full in the mouth but with superb clarity of flavor and grip. A Barolo of great breadth and depth. Firm acids and rich, spreading tannins are thoroughly buffered by rich fruit. Extremely long and lively on the back end.

The 1997 Le Vigne is edged by the 1997 Barolo Cannubi Boschis that follows. Ample and incredibly inviting, the 1997 Cannubi Boschis is a wine of total sensuality. An exotic mélange of dark cherry, plum, leather and spice melds into the super-expressive finish. All of a sudden the conversation stops at the dinner table. That is what great wines can do.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2011 (1x150cl)

      Vinous (95)

The 2011 Barolo Cannubi Boschis is super impressive. Early signs of aromatic nuance have started to develop, but just barely. More than anything else, the 2011 impresses for its body and pure depth, both of which the 2011 has in spades. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and spice all build as this dramatic Barolo shows off its allure. The 2011 has aged beautifully. I would prefer to drink it over the next decade. This is a re-release from the winery.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2014 (1x150cl)

      Wine Advocate (93)

This is the second year Aleste is produced instead of Cannubi Boschis, however the grapes are exactly the same. The 2014 Barolo Aleste is named after Luciano Sandrone's grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. The 2014 is still wound up and will require extra time to find its footing. The Sandrone family lost 25% of their fruit production in this challenging harvest. The wine offers fragrant notes of wild cherry and cassis with smoke, crushed stone and candied orange peel. The tannins are firm and textured. It is the palate (more than the nose) that requires more time to soften.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2016 (1x150cl)

      Wine Advocate (98)

The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Aleste is a very special wine for several reasons. First, we get that exceedingly smooth and seamless quality that we saw in many of the other new releases in this portfolio. This trait sums up the house style. Second, this vintage delivers impeccable intensity that transcends the various fruit, spice, earthy and ethereal components of the bouquet. That equal intensity spread across all parts of the wine is what creates those beautiful transitions. The wine is layered and rich in terms of mouthfeel with a long, fruit and spice-driven finish. The tannins are tucked in at the back, surrounded amply by the wine's textural richness and fruit weight.

Aromas of menthol, pressed rose, wild berry and grilled herb are front and center in this stunning wine along with a whiff of forest floor. Combining structure and finesse, the savory, full-bodied palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, blood orange and licorice before an espresso finish. Firm, refined tannins provide tight support.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 2018 (1x150cl)

      Vinous (94)

The 2018 Barolo Aleste is gorgeous, but also very quite today. There's terrific purity to the dark red/purplish fruit and a good bit of volume too, but readers will have to be patient. Bright acids and firm tannins lend energy. I admire the presence and texture here. The Aleste, from Cannubi Boschis, benefits from a site that can handle moisture. This is nicely done.

Subtle hints of sweet tobacco, mint, dried cherries, crushed flowers and anise are all layers of nuance in a finely sculpted, chiseled Barolo long on personality and class. This is a fabulous showing from Le Vigne.

The purity and the intensity of the wine are exceptional, especially when compared to other Barolos from this vintage. Vinous (96)

The 2014 Barolo Le Vigne once again shows the wisdom of blending fruit from different sites. If there is a vintage where blending has the potential to be the difference-maker, 2014 is it. So it is hardly surprising to find the 2014 Le Vigne in such great shape. The red cherry jam, mint, cedar and floral notes are all finely sketched. Medium in body and classy, the 2014 is beautifully textured and inviting from start to finish. All the elements are simply in the right place. Vineyard sources are Merli, Vignane, Villero and Baudana.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2016 (1x150cl)

      Wine Advocate (100)

I absolutely adore this wine on every emotional and intellectual level. I can still taste it today, weeks after my first sampling. The Luciano Sandrone 2016 Barolo Le Vigne is a stirring and profound expression that pulls on your heartstrings. I found it to be unforgettable, quite literally, inspiring one of those celebrated "wow" moments that we wine lovers so desperately seek in bottle after bottle. Le Vigne is a clever blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba (offering the power), Villero in Castiglione Falletto (shaping the precision), Vignane in Barolo (adding to the purity of the aromas) and Merli in Novello (that helps to flesh out the fruit). This intersection of various vineyards spanning the appellation creates a pyramid of perfection and beauty. The wine shows large construction, but that fruit weight is balanced against the vivid cherry, spice, aniseed and campfire ash that gently lift from the bouquet.

    • Luciano Sandrone Barolo Vigne Sibi Paucis 2008 (1x150cl)

      Wine Advocate (97)

Thank you, Luciano Sandrone for reminding us so vividly of the magnificence of this vintage. The 2008 Barolo Le Vigne Sibi et Paucis comes from a vintage that was sandwiched between other blockbuster years such as 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. This is an excellent expression that excels in the delivery of both power and elegance. These are the two cornerstones of this remarkable wine. Le Vigne is a blend of fruit from various cru sites spanning various townships within the greater Barolo appellation. The percentages of fruit per township (Serralunga d'Alba vs Monforte d'Alba, for example) is adjusted according to the specifics of the vintage. That inherent flexibility is exactly what makes this wine so special. Dark fruit segues to lighter tones of ash, grilled herb and dried fruit. The tannins are silky and long.
