    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

    • Louis Jadot (des Heritiers) Corton Grand Cru Pougets 2017 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91)

The 2017 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has an attractive, wild strawberry, orange blossom and pomegranate bouquet, pure and charming and quite Chambolle-like in style. The palate is fleshy on the entry, delivering fine grip and decent red fruit laced with white pepper and graphite, but it tapers toward the finish, refusing to "kick on" and leaving you wanting more. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2018 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru has a very composed, detailed bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry and pressed rose petal aromas, the most elegant of the three Cortons 2018s from Jadot. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and wonderful acidity. Very harmonious, with an almost luxurious but compelling finish. Superb.

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2019 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) is excellent, unwinding in the glass with notes of cherries, plums, orange rind, dark chocolate, sweet spices and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with broad shoulders and rich, powdery structuring tannins. As usual, this is a fine proposition for the medium- to long-haul.

Beautifully concentrated, this even has a bit of baby fat on it now. That's just fine as that provides a landing pad for the tangy tannins and racy acidity in this cuv e. The vines sit in iron-rich soils which give a slightly burly edge to the mouthfeel, despite the lush ripeness. For those preferring richer Pinot styles, this will show well now. For those seeking more finesse and multi-dimensional aromatic development, give this five years or so. 2023-38

The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins. It's lithe and agile in the mouth with a mineral undertow towards the finish. Often one of Jadot's classiest offerings, this Pougets is no different and one of their stars in 2021.

The 2010 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is much bolder and more extravagant on the nose than the Amoureuses with potent mulberry, raspberry and a hint of tomato vine. The tannins are very supple on the palate, the acidity well-judged with raspberry, red currant and cranberry notes. Medium red. Deep, brooding aromas of dark berries, brown spices and earth. Extremely introverted on the palate, with strong saline soil tones currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. This finished its malolactic fermentation in July (most of these 2013s finished between March and June of last year) and is clearly behind most of the Gevrey wines here in its development. But this saline, classically dry, very long Bonnes-Mares should prove to be an outstanding wine of terroir 10 or 12 years down the road.

The 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Louis Jadot is one of the most firmly shut down wines in the portfolio, but its potential is superb, unfurling in the glass with notes of wild berries, creamy cherry, rose hip and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with outstanding purity and energy, but dominated for the time being by its ample chassis of chalky, fine-grained tannins which will take a decade or more to melt away. Decanter (95)

The Bonnes-Mares is an excellent, cellar worthy wine this year, opening in the glass with a bouquet of cherries, wild berries, currant leaf, coffee and gamebird. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with excellent depth, rich but chalky tannins, and good energy through the long, penetrating finish. This is firmly structured but has the dimension and amplitude to carry it.

      Wine Enthusiast (96)

This is a sumptuous wine, rich and full of both fruit and a cushioned structure. The generosity of this beautifully perfumed wine is considerable, giving juicy fruits as well as acidity. It has great aging potential so don't drink before 2026.

    • Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2019 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a floral bouquet of black and blueberry fruit infused with crushed violet and iris petal. This is completely destemmed, so it does not convey the same amplitude. The palate is medium-bodied, with light Earl Grey and ash notes tincturing the black fruit. Fine structure and focus here. Light on its feet toward the long, sustained finish. This is a superb Bonnes-Mares.

    • Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (96-98)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. This is very impressive and bloomin’ delicious (already!)

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Clos St Denis Grand Cru, from 55-year-old vines (more or less), has a very pure, delineated, sophisticated bouquet with captivating purity. It is actually more Clos de la Roche in style! The palate is very sensual on the entry with dark plum, sea salt and a hint of juniper berry. The tannins are fine but form a framework around the long finish, completing an impressive and delicious Clos Saint Denis from Jadot.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a clean and pure bouquet with ample smoke-tinged blackberry and raspberry fruit, controlled and focused, the mineral scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, plenty of dusky red fruit laced with graphite, although it deserves more complexity and detail to come through ont he finish. That may come with time. It is not up there with the outstanding 2015 but it is still extremely fine.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95-97)

The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, which contains "a few stems," according to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, has a gorgeous bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and touches of crushed stone and orange pith - one of the finest aromatics from Jadot this year. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, demonstrating more weight and fruit intensity than its sibling Clos de la Roche. There is grip, focus and a sense of purpose whereas the Clos de la Roche seems to drink more easily. Superb.

      Jancis Robinson (17.5++)

Ripe and smoky on the nose, powerful and warm. The palate is very ripe, bordering on overripe before a cut of bright acidity and refined powdery tannins. Great intensity and richness with a hint of warming alcohol. Long and burly on the finish, this will reward patience in the cellar.
