    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

      Wine Advocate (92-95)

The 2009 Clos de la Roche comes across as big, powerful and a touch heavy-handed. This shows tons of richness and depth but lacks the sheer excitement of the estate’s finest wines. The Clos de la Roche is made from purchased wine. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

A pungently earthy nose also offers supporting aromas of gentle wood, spice and both red and dark fruit components. There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. This is a robust and very serious effort that possesses excellent cellaring potential and note well that it will need it as this is presently a bruiser.

      Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an inviting, warm and enveloping bouquet that seems to surround the senses and give them a big hug. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, animated citrus fruit underlying the black cherries and wild strawberry notes. There is really quite wonderful precision and focus on the finish. This is one of Jadot's best 2013s.

      Wine Advocate (92-93)

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which comes from three sources, is a little more savory on the nose compared to the Clos Saint Denis, perhaps sans the same level of purity. There is more tertiary notes here, a hint of bacon fat even. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly broader tannin than the Clos Saint Denis that lends it the weight, the presence, albeit without the nervosité or the mineral core expressed by the Clos Saint Denis. Very fine, but I would like to see more nuance develop during the rest of its élevage.

The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a voluminous and extravagant bouquet with blooms of red berry fruit, although I found myself more drawn to the complex and intellectual Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, assertive Clos de la Roche, quite saline in the mouth with a feisty, spicy finish. This is a fine grand cru from Louis Jadot, though not one of their top releases this vintage.

The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb.

The palate is medium-bodied with a dash of white pepper on the entry and slightly honeyed in texture toward the finish, betraying the warmth of the summer. It’s a close call but I just prefer the Clos Saint-Denis this year.

      Wine Advocate (95)

The 2010 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is much bolder and more extravagant on the nose than the Amoureuses with potent mulberry, raspberry and a hint of tomato vine. The tannins are very supple on the palate, the acidity well-judged with raspberry, red currant and cranberry notes. It builds in the mouth, the tannins taking over to manifest a more serious Bonnes-Mares than the nose implies. This is worth cellaring for at least a decade. Drink 2022-2030.

Jadot's 2012 Bonnes Mares is shaping up to be a modern-day classic. Firm tannins underpin a core of blue/black fruit, smoke, tobacco, licorice, cloves and violets, all supported by massive, imposing tannins. Totally alive and pulsating in the glass, the 2012 boasts superb depth and intensity from the very first taste. Savory herbs, licorice and new leather all add complexity over time. This towering, statuesque Burgundy is going to need serious time to come together.

    • Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

Medium red. Deep, brooding aromas of dark berries, brown spices and earth. Extremely introverted on the palate, with strong saline soil tones currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. This finished its malolactic fermentation in July (most of these 2013s finished between March and June of last year) and is clearly behind most of the Gevrey wines here in its development. But this saline, classically dry, very long Bonnes-Mares should prove to be an outstanding wine of terroir 10 or 12 years down the road.

      Wine Advocate (95+)

The 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Louis Jadot is one of the most firmly shut down wines in the portfolio, but its potential is superb, unfurling in the glass with notes of wild berries, creamy cherry, rose hip and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with outstanding purity and energy, but dominated for the time being by its ample chassis of chalky, fine-grained tannins which will take a decade or more to melt away. The rewards of patience will be considerable.

    • Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (95+)

The 2015 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Louis Jadot is one of the most firmly shut down wines in the portfolio, but its potential is superb, unfurling in the glass with notes of wild berries, creamy cherry, rose hip and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with outstanding purity and energy, but dominated for the time being by its ample chassis of chalky, fine-grained tannins which will take a decade or more to melt away. The rewards of patience will be considerable.

    • Louis Jadot Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016 (1x75cl)

      Decanter (95)

The Bonnes-Mares is an excellent, cellar worthy wine this year, opening in the glass with a bouquet of cherries, wild berries, currant leaf, coffee and gamebird. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, with excellent depth, rich but chalky tannins, and good energy through the long, penetrating finish. This is firmly structured but has the dimension and amplitude to carry it.

This is a sumptuous wine, rich and full of both fruit and a cushioned structure. The generosity of this beautifully perfumed wine is considerable, giving juicy fruits as well as acidity. It has great aging potential so don't drink before 2026.

The 2019 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a floral bouquet of black and blueberry fruit infused with crushed violet and iris petal. This is completely destemmed, so it does not convey the same amplitude. The palate is medium-bodied, with light Earl Grey and ash notes tincturing the black fruit. Fine structure and focus here. Light on its feet toward the long, sustained finish. This is a superb Bonnes-Mares.

      Vinous (96-98)

The 2020 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is very pure and harmonious on the nose with plush black cherry and cassis fruit, well-integrated oak and a floral aspect that becomes more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh, lightly spiced with quite a vivacious, mineral-driven finish that retains superb definition. This is very impressive and bloomin’ delicious (already!)

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has an open red cherry, crushed strawberry and sea spray-scented bouquet that perhaps does not quite have the complexity, nor the intrigue of the Mazis-Chambertin at this stage. The palate is refined with grippy tannin and a commendable sense of energy and tension. The salinity comes through on the finish and lends this grand cru fine sappiness, urging you back for another sip. For those with patience...

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2010 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

Good full, medium red. Expressive, nuanced aromas of strawberry, raspberry, crushed stone, smoke and flowers. Glyceral yet light on its feet, with a suave, silky texture to its vibrant, savory red fruit, floral and mineral flavors. Not at all a superripe style: really perks up the palate and leaves the mouth refreshed on the very long, sweet/savory finish. This classy grand cru finishes with captivating perfumed lift.

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95)

Bright, full medium red. Knockout nose shows an almost candied character to the aromas of strawberry, cherry, dark berries, lavender, menthol and Indian spices. Dense, suave and juicy, with a distinctly silky texture to the broad flavors of red fruits, menthol and spices. Utterly seamless, suave, classically dry Chapelle with outstanding energy and definition. Still tight today but the wine's fine-grained tannins and superb breadth and length suggest that it will make a great bottle a decade hence.

    • Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (95)

The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, unfurling in the glass with a lovely and expressive bouquet of cherries, dark chocolate, incense and subtle hints of smoky new oak and clove. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety with a deep core of fruit, tangy but ripe acids and a long, penetrating finish. It's a beautifully elegant and direct example of Chapelle-Chambertin, from a parcel planted in 1920-1921 where most of the old vines remain intact.
