    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2006 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (95-96)

From the Puligny side of that cru, Jadot’s 2006 Batard-Montrachet from both purchased juice and grapes delivers vivid scents of saffron, jasmine, vanilla, musk, brown spices, and ripe peach. Vibrant – virtually electric – on the palate, yet all the while creamy in texture, here is a wine to make one firmly believe in the house proclivity to retain some malic acid. Blind, I might have imagined – at least until further reflection, and recognition of this wine’s sheer power – that I was drinking the Marcobrunn Riesling of my dreams. The persistence of fruit and spice here are as formidable as the foregoing features led one to hope.

From the Puligny side of the appellation. Clear beautiful yellow colour. The nose is discreet but very classy, then this huge wealth of fruit expands across the palate. Aromas of waxy citrus rind, marzipan, white flowers and warm pastry introduce the 2018 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru (Maison Louis Jadot), a full-bodied, ample and enveloping wine that's layered, textural and lively, concluding with a nicely defined finish.

The 2019 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru has a lot of new oak on the nose that, like the Blanchot, renders it rather predictable. The palate is balanced but fat in the mouth, with low acidity and a rather crowd-pleasing but simple finish. So-so.

Red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry and smoked meat; smells concentrated! Then sweet and quite penetrating on the palate, with a slightly tart and reserved character to its fruit, due in large part to the wine's rather powerful acidity. Finishes very pure and long, with plenty of flesh. This reminded me of a much more suave version of the Latricieres.

A cool and highly restrained nose of spice, plum, underbrush and animale notes displays an ample amount of wood influence. The driving minerality of the openly muscular and hugely proportioned flavors is patently obvious and it continues onto the mouth coating and breathtakingly long finish. I very much like the balance here and while it can't quite match the sheer depth of material evidenced by the Chapelle, it's close and like the Chapelle I would suggest that this is very definitely not a good candidate for early consumption.

The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has more amplitude on the nose compared to the Clos-de-Bèze, offering layers of red berry fruit, briar, tobacco and light roasted chestnut aromas. This is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin on the entry. Like the Clos-de-Bèze, the fruit is a little backward at the moment, though there is substance here. It feels tightly coiled, but the structure and density on the finish suggest that it should develop in bottle. Maybe a little more persistence on the aftertaste would not have gone amiss, though that is the leitmotif of the vintage.

Bright full red. The nose offers reticent, rather cool aromas of dark cherry and herbs but lacks the floral lift of most of Jadot's Gevrey premier crus. Very ripe, creamy and concentrated but can't match the Clos Saint-Jacques for definition or inner-mouth tension. A substantial 2016 but I don't find grand cru class or distinction here. Finishes with serious tannins that will require patience.

A pungently earthy nose also offers supporting aromas of gentle wood, spice and both red and dark fruit components. There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which comes from three sources, is a little more savory on the nose compared to the Clos Saint Denis, perhaps sans the same level of purity. There is more tertiary notes here, a hint of bacon fat even. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly broader tannin than the Clos Saint Denis that lends it the weight, the presence, albeit without the nervosité or the mineral core expressed by the Clos Saint Denis. Very fine, but I would like to see more nuance develop during the rest of its élevage.

Representing 9 barrels, all from purchased fruit grown on the Chassagne side of the cru, Jadot’s 2006 Montrachet smells decadently of heliotrope, fading lilies, over-ripe peach, and grilled pineapple; comes to the palate predictably full and rich yet surprisingly fresh and invigorating; and lays down a plush, faintly warm, rich but not especially fine-grained carpet of flavor in the finish. While less dramatic than the Batard or mysterious than the Chevalier, this is nonetheless truly grand, and surely capable of at least a decade’s fascinating evolution.

In a distinctly ripe style but broad and quite dry; in fact, with its superb concentration and fullness, this premier cru made for a good transition to Jadot's grand crus in my tasting. This compellingly rich wine conveys an almost marzipan-like sweetness and should give pleasure early or late. Very long on the aftertaste. There is excellent richness and body to the large-scaled, mineral-inflected and openly powerful flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract before terminating in a striking long finish. This is a robust and very serious effort that possesses excellent cellaring potential and note well that it will need it as this is presently a bruiser.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2013 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an inviting, warm and enveloping bouquet that seems to surround the senses and give them a big hug. The palate is well balanced with fine tannins, animated citrus fruit underlying the black cherries and wild strawberry notes. There is really quite wonderful precision and focus on the finish. This is one of Jadot's best 2013s.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2014 (12x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (92-93)

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, which comes from three sources, is a little more savory on the nose compared to the Clos Saint Denis, perhaps sans the same level of purity. There is more tertiary notes here, a hint of bacon fat even. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly broader tannin than the Clos Saint Denis that lends it the weight, the presence, albeit without the nervosité or the mineral core expressed by the Clos Saint Denis. Very fine, but I would like to see more nuance develop during the rest of its élevage.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru 2015 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a voluminous and extravagant bouquet with blooms of red berry fruit, although I found myself more drawn to the complex and intellectual Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, assertive Clos de la Roche, quite saline in the mouth with a feisty, spicy finish. This is a fine grand cru from Louis Jadot, though not one of their top releases this vintage.

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb.

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an outgoing, generous bouquet of sensual red cherries, crushed strawberry and veins of blueberry that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a dash of white pepper on the entry and slightly honeyed in texture toward the finish, betraying the warmth of the summer. It’s a close call but I just prefer the Clos Saint-Denis this year.

      Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a beguiling bouquet of pure dark cherry and violet aromas, quite mineral-driven and wonderfully delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine grip, and touches of graphite and white pepper toward the sustained finish. This feels cohesive and long, and it should age with style for 20–30 years.

The 2019 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is a clear step up from the Echézeaux, offering a gorgeous marine-influenced bouquet, touches of oyster shell infusing the mixture of red and black fruit, and wonderful mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied, burly and intense with an almost "heaving" structure that grips the palate, all with utmost finesse. Fist, velvet glove, etc.... it’s all here.

The 2020 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru has a nicely-detailed bouquet: mulberry, crushed stone, rose petal and light bergamot aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky-textured but quite persistent finish. I admire the tension here and the length - a noble G.E.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Montrachet Grand Cru 2006 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (94-95)

      Tim Atkin MW (94)

A regal Puligny with high-toned aromatics, sweet spice undercurrents and dignified concentration, these 85-year-old vines always make a distinguished, concentrated Puligny. This is beautifully textured with a light waxiness that is wiped from the palate by exuberant acidity on the lingering finish. 2022-30

The 2021 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru has an attractive nose with touches of slate and a slight fumé scent that complements the malic aromas. This gains precision in the glass. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp bead of acidity. A stem ginger note hides in the background, whilst the finish feels reassuringly persistent. This should age well in bottle.

      Vinous (92+)

Pale, bright yellow. White peach, crushed herbs and dusty stone on the nose, plus a touch of brown spices. Surprisingly sweet, rich and pliant on the palate but with strong acidity that hasn't yet integrated with the wine's fruit. Concentrated, saline wine with a very long finish. Offers outstanding potential.

    • (Maison) Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles 2016 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (92)

Bright, light yellow. Deeper-pitched aromas of yellow peach and honey. As with the Combettes, the yield here was almost 90% of normal. Incidentally, Jadot did not make a Puligny-Montrachet Le Cailleret in 2016.
