    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

Cask sample. Bright mid garnet. Sweet, jewelly, bright-fruited nose. Superior density and great fragrance. Real impact on the palate. Great persistence. Refined but not scrawny. This wine smells like where it comes from: high on the hills of Gevrey, tucked in near to the forest. Forest floor and fresh mushrooms mingle with bramble and blackberries. Nicely ripe and less crunchy than it often is, the full body is surrounded by spicy tannins and generous acidity. 2024-35

Bright, dark red. Highly complex, expressive scents and flavors of black cherry, blueberry, blackberry, licorice, animal fur and brown spices. Rich, pliant and slightly wild in the mouth, conveying compelling Gevrey perfume. Very suave for Cazetiers and most impressive on the back end, which features serious but smooth tannins and rising, palate-staining length. Cazetiers is our most consistent Gevrey premier cru after Clos Saint-Jacques, notes winemaker Frédéric Barnier.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has an exquisite bouquet of crystalline red berry fruit laced with minerals, wonderfully delineated and focused. The palate is smooth and sensual on the entry, and very cohesive, with a perfect line of acidity. Pure and ravishing, armed with a satin-textured finish, this is going to be very difficult to resist once in bottle. Superb.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is very composed on the nose with blackberry, briary, Earl Grey and light marine nuances on the finish. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe red fruit, grippy tannins and though there is some new oak to be assimilated on the finish, it just needs 5-7 years in the cellar before you will surely have a fine Cazetiers on your hands.

A dazzlingly complex and pure nose reveals an incredible breadth of spice-box and dark fruit aromas that are displaying only a whisper of secondary development along with just enough wood to comment on. The ripe and seductive yet incredibly intense medium-bodied flavors display marvelous depth and perfect balance on the sappy, sweet, powerful and hugely long finish that is beautifully detailed and focused. This beauty is a model of grace and understatement and while it could be drunk now with pleasure I would advise waiting as it seems quite clear that there is still plenty of unrealized development potential. In sum, this is stunningly good.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru, which contains just under 50% stems, demands more coaxing than the Les Amoureuses, eventually revealing cranberry and hints of hoisin, sous-bois, tobacco and crushed stone aromas, all very complex. The palate is medium-bodied, with supple tannin framing pure dark berry fruit laced with brown spice, tobacco and sage. This Musigny displays wonderful density and power, yet retains the precision of a noble Burgundy on the long finish. Outstanding.

1 x 350 litre barrel is the whole crop! No great depth to the colour, nor do I pick up much on the nose. The more sumptuous style of Musigny shows on the palate but in a muted register. From the southern side of this large premier cru, the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes (Maison Louis Jadot) offers up appealing aromas of plums, pomegranate, espresso roast, raw cocoa and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with good depth and concentration and a broad-shouldered chassis of fine but chalky tannin. This looks promising.

Densely flavorful on the palate, there are mulberries, cherry pits, grilled hazelnuts and a touch of underbrush. The fine-boned tannins chisel the rounded, medium-bodied palate before the perky acidity floods the nicely detailed finish. 2023-28

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has a very attractive, pure bouquet with shimmering red berry fruit, wilted rose petal and a touch of undergrowth that becomes increasingly floral with aeration. Impressive delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins. Sensual and supple, there are no hard edges here, and the finish seems to glide. This will be tempting young, but it has the substance to age.

    Vinous (86-88)

The 2018 Volnay Village has a strong potpourri/lavender bouquet that rather overrides the terroir expression. The palate is sweet and chewy on the entry, balanced and clean, but just missing a bit of charm and personality.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a well defined bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and bergamot tea, nicely focused and articulating the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, a fine bead of acidity, gentle grip and an innocuous but refreshing, classically styled finish. Fine.
