    Louis Jadot

    About Maison Louis Jadot

A legendary name in Burgundy with which every collector will be intimately familiar, Maison Louis Jadot was founded in 1859 by the eponymous Louis Henry Denis Jadot, although the family had roots as grape growers in the region dating back far further than this.

Purchased by the Kopf family after the death of the last male members of the Jadot family, the Maison currently owns over 60 hectares of vines itself whilst purchasing fruit from select growers to supplement their holdings. In Jacques Lardière, this mighty winery has one of the most experienced and highly respected winemakers in the entire region, having held the position through the transition of ownership since 1970!

A true pioneer of low intervention viticulture and winemaking, Lardière believes the terroir of his sites is the single most beautiful tool at his disposal. It is the soil and sunlight of Burgundy which transposes the wines of Maison Louis Jadot, conveying a sense of time and place in the greatest of Burgundian fashions.

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2017 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a charming bouquet of red berry fruit infused with orange pith and hints of nougat. There is real intensity to this Les Amoureuses, equal to that of the Bonnes-Mares. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, beautifully integrated oak, lovely depth and a hint of dark chocolate on the lactic finish. It will take time for everything to meld together, but this feels very assured even at such a premature stage.

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of violet-infused black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, extremely elegant and refined and gaining intensity with every swirl of the glass. The medium-bodied palate features mint-chocolate-tinged black fruit. The oak is quite conspicuous at the moment and occludes the terroir profile toward the finish. Give it a few years to meld together so the palate matches the breeding of the aromatics.

    • Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 2010 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Feusselottes sweeps across the palate with rich, textured dark cherries, flowers, mint and graphite. The fleshy fruit is nicely supported by veins of minerality in this expansive, generous wine. Here, too, the style is quite serious and powerful. The darker side of Chambolle comes through in spades, but there is also plenty of sensuality and grace. In short, this is a marvelous wine endowed with terrific overall balance.

Medium red, less bright than the Feusselottes. Reticent nose hints at crushed stone. Silky-sweet on entry, then surprisingly open-knit in the middle, with sweet berry and mineral flavors carrying nicely through a broad, fine-grained finish. Has the stuffing to support its smooth tannins. (My sample of the Chambolle-Musigny Baudes was locked up tight and in a dry phase; it will require revisiting next year in bottle.)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru shows more reduction than the Les Baudes, and consequently, I find this warm and more difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, more sorbet-like than the Les Baudes and slightly candied towards the finish but without quite the same pedigree. However, it should still drink well for a number of years.

Bright, full medium red. Knockout nose shows an almost candied character to the aromas of strawberry, cherry, dark berries, lavender, menthol and Indian spices. Dense, suave and juicy, with a distinctly silky texture to the broad flavors of red fruits, menthol and spices. Utterly seamless, suave, classically dry Chapelle with outstanding energy and definition. Still tight today but the wine's fine-grained tannins and superb breadth and length suggest that it will make a great bottle a decade hence.

The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing even better from bottle than it did from barrel, unfurling in the glass with a lovely and expressive bouquet of cherries, dark chocolate, incense and subtle hints of smoky new oak and clove. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and velvety with a deep core of fruit, tangy but ripe acids and a long, penetrating finish. It's a beautifully elegant and direct example of Chapelle-Chambertin, from a parcel planted in 1920-1921 where most of the old vines remain intact.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Clos St Denis Grand Cru, from 55-year-old vines (more or less), has a very pure, delineated, sophisticated bouquet with captivating purity. It is actually more Clos de la Roche in style! The palate is very sensual on the entry with dark plum, sea salt and a hint of juniper berry. The tannins are fine but form a framework around the long finish, completing an impressive and delicious Clos Saint Denis from Jadot.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

      Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2016 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has a clean and pure bouquet with ample smoke-tinged blackberry and raspberry fruit, controlled and focused, the mineral scents emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, plenty of dusky red fruit laced with graphite, although it deserves more complexity and detail to come through ont he finish. That may come with time. It is not up there with the outstanding 2015 but it is still extremely fine.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (95-97)

The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, which contains "a few stems," according to winemaker Frédéric Barnier, has a gorgeous bouquet of raspberry, cranberry and touches of crushed stone and orange pith - one of the finest aromatics from Jadot this year. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, demonstrating more weight and fruit intensity than its sibling Clos de la Roche. There is grip, focus and a sense of purpose whereas the Clos de la Roche seems to drink more easily. Superb.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

      Jancis Robinson (17.5++)

Ripe and smoky on the nose, powerful and warm. The palate is very ripe, bordering on overripe before a cut of bright acidity and refined powdery tannins. Great intensity and richness with a hint of warming alcohol. Long and burly on the finish, this will reward patience in the cellar.

      Wine Spectator (94)

Pure aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry and plum, with a dense profile and supple texture. Tightly wound now, with red currant and mineral elements that move in on the finish. Should become more elegant with time. Best from 2014 through 2035. 130 cases imported. -BS

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2011 (6x75cl)

      Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Good medium red. Expressive aromas of black cherry, licorice and menthol; reduced today but very Clos Vougeot. Dense and vibrant, with very good underlying spine to its black fruit flavors. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and excellent length. A serious Clos Vougeot in the making.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2012 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2012 Clos Vougeot is one of the most impressive of the Grand Crus I tasted at Jadot this year. Powerful, rich and layered, the 2012 has more than enough fruit to balance the tannins. Dark red fruit, scorched earth, chalk and iron are all layered into the supple, racy finish. This is a surprisingly finessed Clos Vougeot. Hints of rose petal and mint add lift on the close. There is so much to admire here.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2013 (3x150cl)

      Vinous (92)

Full medium red. Medicinal cherry and oak aromas are energized by minerals and pungent blood orange. Very primary and sharply delineated, with bitter cherry and saline mineral flavors complemented by an exotic floral character. Juicy, tightly wound and serious but already conveying strong personality.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

      Wine Spectator (97)

Rose, cherry and spice aromas introduce this light-bodied, saturated version. The flavors add wild strawberry, incense and kirsch notes, while remaining persistent on the kaleidoscopic finish. Feels tense now, yet should develop nicely over time. A mineral element lingers.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2018 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has an intense bouquet of blueberry, cassis and iodine aromas, almost Chambolle-like in style. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Citrus-fresh with orange peel and marmalade notes toward the persistent finish. Excellent.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

      Jancis Robinson (17+)

Cask sample. Glowing ruby. Some really savoury undertow keeps this interesting! Polished tannins and some stoniness. Lots of pinched tannins but that’s not a bad thing. Gives it interest and pace. Very different from most reds in the Jadot stable. Mineral not fruit. Not flattering but a success. Fine-boned.

    • Louis Jadot Clos-Vougeot Grand Cru 2021 (6x75cl)

      Jancis Robinson (17)

Cask sample. Pale to mid garnet. Firm, well-integrated nose. Sweet start and quite substantial. I think this would show quite well in a blind tasting with its Clos de Vougeot peers. A trace of dry tannin on the end but that promises well for the future. Firm with a little sour-cherry flavour but quite majestic build – even if it’s not nearly as alluring as the Clos St-Jacques!
