Château Haut-Batailley
About Château Haut-Batailley
Chateau Haut-Batailley marks the entrance into the vineyard of Pauillac with the iconic l’Aspic tower that dominates the estate. The estate is a classified growth, including in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. However, the actual vineyard of Chateau Haut Batailley was defined in 1942 when the estate was divided into two separate properties. In 2017, a new chapter under the Cazes family of Chateau Lynch-Bages began and promises to be extremely exciting.
Viniculture
The vineyard extends over forty hectares on soils of deep Garonne gravel. Twenty-two hectares are currently in production. When the Cazes family took over, nineteen hectares of land with planting rights within AOC Pauillac had not been planted (they were never reinstated after Phylloxera). In 2018, following an in-depth study of the terroirs, an extensive planting programme was started.
Particularly representative of the Pauillac appellation, grapes are currently Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Chateau Haut-Batailley and Verso, the second wine of the property, complement each other to write the history of the property.
The new label is inspired by the master of imagination Gustave Doré, in the true style of Victorian lithographs. Its subtle variations in colour bring the clouds to life in a halo of golden light.

James Suckling (94)There’s immediate appeal to the nose and palate. Both are bathed in blackberries and dark plums. The tannins are superbly cut and very long and fresh. The oak chimes in with spicy flavors and bolsters plush grape tannins in a harmonious finish. Try from 2022. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (94)The 2016 Haut-Batailley was tasted from two bottles, the first showing a touch of TCA. The second has an airy and well-defined bouquet of blackberry, graphite and subtle floral aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and very classic in style, displaying impressive grip. I appreciate the substance toward the finish, and the pencil lead lingering on the aftertaste. This is an outstanding Haut-Batailley. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. |

James Suckling (94-95)This is very structured and serious. Full-bodied, tannic and powerful. Boom. This is one of the best Haut-Batailleys in years. From the new owners, who also own Lynch-Bages. |

James Suckling (94-95)I can’t remember a Haut-Batailley this tannic, yet the tannins are savory and very ripe with beauty and purity. Full-bodied, chewy tannins and a long and intense finish. |

James Suckling (94-95)This is really minerally and stony with lots of chewy tannins. Medium-to full-bodied with a clean, fresh finish. Very classic Pauillac. Salty at the end with bitter citrus. |

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93-96)The 2023 Haut-Batailley is another impressive wine from this Chateau. There's plenty of the typical dark fruit and overall breadth that is such a signature, but the tannins show greater finesse than in some prior years—a very positive evolution that continues here. Black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves, leather and licorice are all beautifully amplified. The 2023 marks another major step forward for Haut-Batailley. |
