Vinous (88)
The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Charmes des Mazières 1er Cru is showing some VA on the nose that is masking the terroir expression. The palate is sweet and candied with rather aggressive tannin, possibly overdone in the winery, although I can abide the grainy, quite masculine finish. But will that dry out with age? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. GSTSG$2,298.22 -

Wine Advocate (91-93)
Guyon walks the old-vine parcels that produce this cuvée a day or two before harvest, selecting grapes by taste and marking which vines to pick and which to relegate to the regular Vosne-Romanée. The ensuing 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Charmes de Mazières is outstanding, unfurling in the glass with a deep but reserved bouquet of wild berries, rose petal, cinnamon, incense and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and deeper, more concentrated and more layered than the regular Vosne, framed by fine chewy tannins that will need some time. It's a wine that transcends the vintage.Inc. GSTSG$2,565.27 -
Wine Advocate (89-91)
Bursting with aromas of blackberries, cassis, spices, rose petals and orange rind, the 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Charmes de Mazières is medium to full-bodied, rich and chewy, with a muscular chassis of firm tannin and a reserved, introverted profile. Guyon hopes to bottle it without added sulfites.Inc. GSTSG$3,317.37 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Not deeper in colour, perhaps just a touch brighter even than the village Vosne. An even finer detail, with more precision, still just a note too much of new oak. Broader shoulders, more structure behind, which tames the fruit and stops it getting soupy. An exceptional intensity of liquid raspberry with great persistence. Drink from 2027-2033.Inc.
