Domaine Georges Noellat
About Domaine Georges Noellat
Only in his early 20s, Maxime Cheurlin was marked for stardom from his very first vintage in 2010 and has achieved considerable success already. Taking over the Domaine from his grandmother, situated next door to Sylvain Cathiard, the wunderkind produces complex and delicate wines.
Maxime is the nephew of the Jayer family and a cousin of Guillaume Rouget (son of Emmanuel Rouget) who trained with legendary Henri Jayer. Maxime worked at Rouget in 2009 and Gros Frere & Soeur in Vosne Romanee in 2008. Maxime’s style is modelled somewhat after Rouget’s, with a focus on clarity and a pronounced influence of new oak.
Viniculture
De-stemming completely the grapes (except for 20% for the Echezeaux), he intends to give the wines an outstanding purity. His wines are elegant yet exhibit good power and poise with a good progression of quality and style from the villages-level up to the Grands Crus. The character of the vintage comes through as well with the wines tasting surprising forward from the barrel. These will age well in cellar but also pleasantly enjoyable at every stage in their development.

Vinous (96)The 2018 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is consistent with my notes from barrel. On the nose, it offers dark berry fruit, a little earthiness at first giving way to black truffle and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry, good grip and a sturdy finish that will require bottle age. [Postscript: returning to the bottle the following evening, it has blossomed into a sublime Grands Echézeaux, the sturdiness disappearing and the wine attaining a sumptuous texture.] |

Wine Advocate (92-94)Matured in 60% new oak, the 2015 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras has an opulent bouquet with blueberry and black cherry fruit soaring from the glass, the oak neatly integrated, although I detected just a little warmth here that detracted from the delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin. There is clearly a solid backbone to this Nuits Saint Georges that lends it a Morey-Saint-Denis-like personality. There is ample blackberry and raspberry notes infused with white pepper and sage, fanning out in confident fashion towards the detailed finish. This is a sturdy and forthright 2015 that will drink beautifully over 15-20 years. This wine is superb. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru is matured entirely in new oak and is completely de-stemmed. The wood is dominating the nose at the moment, although there is sufficient fruit underneath to soak it up with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of plush blueberry fruit and a sweet, almost candied finish that lingers in the mouth. Superb. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes, so give it some serious cellaring. |

Vinous (92-94)The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru is fully de-stemmed and matured in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, floral bouquet of black cherries, cassis and crushed violet scents on the nose, becoming more and more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, sorbet-fresh from the start and culminating in an intense, almost vitamin-like finish. Excellent. |

Vinous (94-96)The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a wonderful, pure, elegant bouquet of vivid red berry fruit infused with perfumed rose petals; hints of orange blossom emerge with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, very harmonious and superbly structured, with seamlessly integrated oak. Who made the best Les Petit Monts this vintage? Hands up... Yes, it's you, Maxime Chuerlin. |
