Fattoria La Massa
The Fattoria La Massa estate is situated in the hills of Panzano, in the prestigious 'Conca d’Oro' (Golden Basin) of the Chianti Classico DOCG zone. The estates history dates back to the fifteenth century and was acquired by the current owner Giampaolo Motta in 1992. Under Motta's ownership the estate has thrived. The first vintage of the flagship 'Giorgio Primo' (sold as Chianti Classico then) was awarded the prestigious 'Tre Bicchieri' (three glasses) from the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso. The praise of the international press has been ongoing since. Alongside top oenologist Carlo Ferrini, they have made dramatic improvements to the vineyards; planting the vines closer together, introducing new clones and experimenting with the classic Super Tuscan grape varieties: Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Wanting more freedom to develop their own style, Motta decided to start producing only IGT wines that were driven by La Massa's terroir.

James Suckling (93)A plush red with sweet-berry and spice aromas and flavors. Hints of vanilla. Full body. Lush and delicious. Needs a little time to come together, but already very attractive. Drink or hold. |

Vinous (95)The 2017 Carla 6, La Massa's 100% Sangiovese, is fleshy, succulent and incredibly inviting. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, blood orange and spice give the 2017 its racy feel. There is plenty of Sangiovese character, and yet at the same time, proprietor Giampaolo Motta has succeeded in crafting a wine that has its own distinctive personality. I can't think of many pure Sangioveses that manage to be opulent and also varietal. |
