    Faiveley

The historic Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's leading domaines. There is no doubt that in the last decade, under the guidance of Erwan Faiveley and winemaker Jérôme Flous, they have undergone a renaissance of style, shedding their old-school, austere reds for elegant, beautifully finessed wines.

Domaine Faiveley owns holdings in many of Burgundy’s most revered vineyards in the Côte de Nuits (Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, etc.) and in the Côte de Beaune (Corton-Charlemagne, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Volnay, Pommard, etc.) with some of these being monopoles under single ownership.

Although armed with an incredible variety of vineyards, Faiveley also have their extraordinary heritage and experience as an advantage over their local rivals. No less than seven generations of Faiveleys have succeeded each other in running the domaine since it was founded in 1825.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru bides its time opening up, revealing raspberry and cranberry fruit, autumn leaves, touches of orange pith. Cohesive and focused, it gains vigour in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brown spices and white pepper that are liberally sprinkled over the finish that has a very small attenuation. But this is still well-crafted.

(from vines facing southeast, whereas the regular Clos de Beze is from south-facing vines; these vines are also a bit older: 55 years vs. 45): Good deep red. A coulis of red fruits sharpened by blood orange on the nose. Less reduced and more vibrant than the cuvee classique and utterly primary in the mouth, with pure fruit flavors framed and lifted by underlying minerality and perfectly integrated acidity. The explosive, highly perfumed finish features outstanding grip and punch and unflagging perfume. There will be just 4 barrels of this juice in 2011 (the cuvee was originally introduced in 2009), vs. 15 of the basic bottling. Good full red, not darker than the regular Clos de Bèze. Suave and floral on the nose, showing pungent black pepper lift to its raspberry and mineral aromas. More luscious than the first Clos de Bèze but light on its feet, showing a wonderfully chiseled, penetrating quality and outstanding inner-mouth perfume. This struck me as more like a 2013, or a 2010. Not yet demonstrative in the middle but shows Musigny-like finesse. And the rising finish goes on and on. This incredible wine should evolve in bottle for decades.

(made from same plot of 60+-year-old vines on the Chambertin side of this grand cru as in the past; 100% destemmed): Bright dark red. Raspberry and a touch of reduction on the nose. Then dense, sappy and high-pitched in the mouth, with terrific intensity and saline complexity to the intense red berry flavors. Notes of menthol and crushed stone contribute to an impression of youthful tightness. Harder to taste today than the classic Clos de Bèze, which is showing more energy and salty minerality in the early going. But this is subtler and longer on the aftertaste, with a distinctly floral, feminine character that reminded me of a great Chambolle-Musigny. Very different in style from Faiveley's basic Clos de Bèze, but is it better?

The 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru Les Ouvrées Rodin is showing brilliantly from bottle, unfurling in the glass with a rich bouquet of cassis, cherries, red berries, grilled game, licorice, spices and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and expansive, with a deep and intense core of sapid fruit that cloaks its satiny but abundant structuring tannins, underpinned by succulent acids and concluding with a seriously long, penetrating finish. This special cuvée hails from a parcel of vines planted in 1966 on the Chambertin side of Clos de Bèze, and its name commemorates a Faiveley family connection with the sculptor Rodin.

    Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Mid crimson. Open and scented with vanilla-laced dark-red fruits. Firm, almost chewy on the palate. Like all these Faiveley grands crus, the oak is not hidden but is swallowed by pure fruit, perfectly ripe but not overripe and with that wonderful character of purity without excess sweetness. Excellent balance between ripeness and freshness. Chewy, structured finish. Coming back to this wine after it has been open longer, there’s a floral note that is easy to miss and adds to the incipient complexity.

Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Less sweet-smelling than the Clos de Vougeot, with plenty of open, dark-red fruit and also a light herbal note, which lifts it and adds freshness. Firm and dry on the palate, dry yet elegant, the fruit filling out the core. Chalk-fine texture. A little constrained at the moment.

Aromas of cassis, orange rind, smoked meats and loamy soil introduce Faiveley's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, layered and demonstrative wine that's concentrated and succulent, with an ample core of ripe fruit framed by velvety tannins and lively acids. This is another especially fine cuvée this year.

One of the most classic Grands Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, the Clos de la Roche is beautiful wine. Well-built with a firm structure and linear backbone of acidity it is tightly wound and will need some time to give away the generous character that is bundled up inside.

Earthy red berry fruit aromas trimmed in a discreet touch of wood spice are laced with earth, forest floor and violet hints. The full-bodied and tautly muscled broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent power and detail on the stunningly long, mildly rustic and youthfully austere finish. This is quite serious and clearly very structured yet it stops short of being overtly old school in style; that said, this will not be an early drinker.

Clos de la Roche is the most northerly of Morey-Saint-Denis' four Grand Cru vineyards. Clos de la Roche is considered one of Morey-Saint-Denis' very best vineyards, and makes full, structured wines with characteristics of cherry and truffle. The vineyard lies on Morey-Saint-Denis' border with Gevrey-Chambertin. The terroir in Clos de la Roche is based largely on limestone. The ‘roche’ (rock) in the name goes back to pre-history, and is reputed to have been used by local druids in their rituals. The Clos de la Roche vineyard was awarded Grand Cru status in December 1936. Domaine Faiveley was established in 1825 in Nuits Saint Georges. The domaine has become one of the best producers in the Côte d'Or and their Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is one of the jewels in their crown. This is excellent superb value for this vineyard in a year like 2018.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru bides its time opening up, revealing raspberry and cranberry fruit, autumn leaves, touches of orange pith. Cohesive and focused, it gains vigour in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, brown spices and white pepper that are liberally sprinkled over the finish that has a very small attenuation. But this is still well-crafted.

    Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Less sweet-smelling than the Clos de Vougeot, with plenty of open, dark-red fruit and also a light herbal note, which lifts it and adds freshness. Firm and dry on the palate, dry yet elegant, the fruit filling out the core. Chalk-fine texture. A little constrained at the moment.

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

    Burghound (92-95)
