    De Montille

Domaine de Montille in the Cote de Beaune was developed by Hubert de Montille in 1951. His family have aristocratic roots in the region’s land since the 17th century. Now run by his son, Etienne, they use traditional wine making techniques to produce pure elegant Burgundy that generally requires five years bottle ageing.

      Wine Advocate (92-94)

The 2013 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru, which was two-third whole-cluster fruit, has a well-defined bouquet with very fine mineralité. These aromatics just speak of class. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh and supple tannins, finely-tuned acidity and commendable precision on the finish. This is a refined and sophisticated Clos du Roi in the making and one of de Montille's standouts of 2013.

The 2016 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru has quite a lot of oak on the nose, although it seems in sync with the redcurrant and cranberry fruit underneath. It is fragrant and become increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of red fruit and impressive mineralité. This is one of the most terroir-driven Cortons of the vintage, presumably its limestone soils are expressed on the finish. Promising. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is two-thirds whole cluster fruit. Quite closed, broody and stroppy on the nose, it does not budge when I gave my glass aeration. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, quite saline and spicy, a dash of white pepper towards the finish. Good depth, quite voluminous on the finish. • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (92+)

Bright yellow. Musky pineapple and lemon aromas offer a bit less lift today than the Cailleret but plenty of allure. Less sweet and pristine in the middle palate than the Cailleret, but a bit thicker in texture, with the stony underpinning and spine of lemony acidity to give it a seriously penetrating quality. A sexy element of reduction adds to this young wine's considerable appeal. Conveys a strong, tactile impression of dry extract without any rough edges and finishes salty and long. A year ago, the Cailleret seemed creamier and more harmonious than this wine but this has put on weight without any loss of tension.

This silky, edge-free wine finishes classically dry and long, with lovely lemony lift and grip.

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. (Winemaker Brian Sieve explained that this has as much to do with the cellar in Meursault vis-à-vis Puligny as with winemaking decisions.) The palate is well balanced with a rounded entry, smooth and harmonious, offering tropical tones of apricot and nectarine. As with the Porusots, I would have liked more mineralité and tension on the finish, though there is satisfying length.

Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there's a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru It has an intense bouquet – like other Meursaults from de Montille, carrying a little reduction, but with more crushed stone, mineralité and white flower scents than the Les Porusots. The palate is well balanced with impressive depth, tension and vigor, offering citrus lemon and orange pith mixed with hazelnut toward the sustained finish. Excellent.

    • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2019 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2019 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru showed quite a heavy reduction on the nose that made it difficult to read. (Winemaker Brian Sieve explained that this has as much to do with the cellar in Meursault vis-à-vis Puligny as with winemaking decisions.) The palate is well balanced with a rounded entry, smooth and harmonious, offering tropical tones of apricot and nectarine. As with the Porusots, I would have liked more mineralité and tension on the finish, though there is satisfying length.

    • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2020 (6x75cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a well-defined nose with perhaps more mineralité than others. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, light tropical notes with hints of peach and apricot, quite sensual towards the finish that lingers in the mouth. Delicious, but maybe it just needs a little more tension. Closure: Diam

The 2021 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a superb bouquet with wonderful mineralité that clearly defines the climat. The palate is very well balanced, linear and tensile, elegant and poised towards the finish with a touch of lemon sherbet on the aftertaste. Very classy.

    • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 2018 (3x75cl)

      Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru, matured in 25% new oak, shows a little reduction on the nose, but there is decent fruit concentration underneath. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, although the reduction dominates the finish at the moment. It could evolve into a fine Les Porusots, but it will need time to lose that reduction (and possibly a good decant).

    • De Montille Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 2019 (3x150cl)

      Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-93)

From the upper part. Pale lime and lemon. After a lean and discreet bouquet, the wine starts to fill out on the palate, racier behind yet still with a good broad basis of white fruit. Some length Tasted: October 2020

    • De Montille Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey 2017 (12x75cl)

      Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru has two-thirds whole cluster fruit and matures in 40% new oak. It has a refined and quite backward bouquet that demands encouragement, light sous-bois and crushed limestone scents percolating through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit. A firm grip in the mouth with a light oyster shell influence defining what is a very detailed and persistent finish. Very good potential here - superb.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Thorey 1er Cru, which is two-thirds whole cluster, has a very focused bouquet of elegant red cherry, raspberry and briary aromas, plus a hint of bay leaf and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity thanks to the calcareous soils, and displays superb tension and focus toward the finish. A gorgeous, ethereal Aux Thorey.

    • De Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Pezerolles 2016 (3x150cl)

      Vinous (91-93)

(from the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there's a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins.

The 2019 Pommard Les Pézerolles 1er Cru is much more backward on the nose compared to de Montille’s other Pommards, offering brambly red berry fruit, clove and bay leaf. The palate is beautifully balanced, the 50% whole cluster contributing a light pepperiness but allowing the terroir to shine. Smooth on the finish.
