Castello di Neive
Since the early 1960s, there have been only two wineries with access to Santo Stefano, which is arguably Barbaresco's finest vineyard. One is Bruno Giacosa and the other is Castello di Neive. Recently Castello di Neive have put on new staff to work in the vineyards and cellars and the results are striking. Considering the pedigree of the vineyard, this is a smart buy if you love the rarefied reds of Piedmont.

Vinous (92)The 2014 Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano offers notable depth and raciness. Dark cherry, plum, sweet spice and floral notes are all given an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and texture in its striking, exotic Barbaresco. Next to the 2015, the 2014 has a bit more mid-palate ripeness and overall body. This is an intriguing wine from Castello di Neive. |

Vinous (90)The 2017 Barbaresco Albesani is a rich, heady wine that very much reflects the south radiance of the year. Super-ripe dark red cherry, red plum, mocha, leather and licorice flesh out nicely. The 2017 is ample, ripe and forward, with enough tannin and structure to develop nicely in bottle for a number of years to come. Like so many 2017 Barbarescos, it is a bit light, especially on the mid palate. |

Decanter (93)Within the Albesani MGA, Santo Stefano represents the flagship of Castello di Neive's vineyards. Bright ruby with a garnet rim in the glass, it's focused on graphite minerality and dried cherry, completed by liquorice and a balsamic puff. More extracted than supple on the palate - despite a graceful attack - it is built with grainy, youthful, assertive but sweet tannins, and will develop amazing complexity in time. |
