Bouchard Père & Fils
Founded in 1731, Bouchard is one of the most long-standing and important producers in Burgundy. Since their founding, they have been assembling a collection of some of the best Cote d'Or vineyards, including 12 Grand Crus and no less than 74 1er Crus.
With more prestige and history than most, Vinous's Neal Martin has praised them in the past because their wines are "well priced compared to others". As a grower, producer and negociant, it is undeniable that Bouchard Père et Fils has played a significant role in the history of Burgundy but they have now shed their negociant tag as their new owner Artémis Domaines, who also own the likes of Château Latour and now Eisele Vineyard in Napa, have a policy of wishing only to make wines from vineyards which they own.

Bouchard’s holding here is superb: 0.90ha on the edge of the Puligny side at midslope between Ramonet and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 2019, Bouchard emphasised the richness by picking this parcel last. Ripe apples, white flowers and even a touch of honey make their appearance on the nose, while the texture on the palate is unctuous and deep without being heavy. There is still enough freshness to keep this lively through the intensely long finish.Inc. GSTSG$7,080.03 -

Hailing from the Puligny side on the upper slopes between DRC and Ramonet, this sublime wine has incredible freshness and a dazzling aromatic profile. Cinnamon and clove blend with pear core, chamomile, sweet orchard fruit and crushed rocks. Though thoroughly concentrated with good extract, the wine seems to float on the palate thanks to the gracious lift of the seamless, mouth-watering acidity. Vague chalkiness adds compelling texture to the long finish. 2025-40Inc. GSTSG$3,371.17 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a succinct nose, the 50% whole bunches are neatly embroidered into the red berry fruit, with touches of iodine developing over time. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious, velvety smooth with deftly integrated oak towards the surprisingly concentrated, blueberry-tinged finish. One of the pleasant surprises from Bouchard Père this vintage.Inc. GSTSG$1,318.25 -

James Suckling (95)
This a firm and pretty red with a solid tannin backbone to the medium body. Ripe fruit with some walnut, tobacco, and floral undertones. It’s long and flavorful. Balanced and firm. Classic style. Drink in 2025.Inc. GSTSG$753.67 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)
Absolutely black centre to this with a massively concentrated bouquet, thus far hiding the detail. Inky depths. I would like to see this again after racking. The wine is not destabilised on the palate and the concentration is certainly exceptional, fresher at the finish. There is certainly an awful lot of wine here: buy it if you want a wine for 25 years time! Tasted: November 2021Inc. GSTSG$1,078.53 -

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Very dense purple, old vines on white marl, this usually needs picking later but not this year. Plenty of energy, to the dark fruited bouquet. Very intense, now raspberry and blackcurrant notes, lively finish. Medium plus length, this has some grace. Tasted: November 2021Inc. GSTSG$825.57 -

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Du Château Blanc inexplicably did not finish its malolactic until June or July. It has a tightly wound, slightly resinous bouquet. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, crisp acidity, quite minerally in the mouth with a brisk, slightly oaky finish that lingers. What a lovely white Burgundy!Inc. GSTSG$631.55 -
