Aperture

About Aperture

Jesse Katz is the former assistant winemaker at Screaming Eagle. Dubbed a “wunderkind, a boy genius, a maverick” (Kim Westerman, Forbes, 31 Jul 2020), Katz is a rising star in Sonoma County. Although he is relatively unheard of in Europe, Jane Anson of Decanter Magazine thinks it is just a matter of time.

Aperture wines are small batch and they sell out quickly, but they are worth searching out, combining as they do the best of the Old and New World, delivering a powerful punch but well sculpted with natural balance and no acidification or other cellar tricks.” (Decanter Magazine, Jan 2018)

When Jesse Katz headed the winemaking team at Lancaster Estate at the tender age of 25, he grew the winery’s Roth brand by over 800% within 5 years, and the Roth Pinot Noir rose above over 80 other Pinot Noirs from around the world to clinch the top spot during a blind tasting at the annual Pigs & Pinot celebration in Healdsburg.  In 2017, the wine that Jesse made for Shep Gordon (one of Hollywood’s best-known talent managers), a 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc blend from Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, was crowned the most expensive wine ever sold when it was auctioned for US$350,000.

Other than making wines for others (including Justin Timberlake!), Jesse founded 3 of his own labels – Devil Proof, The Setting and Aperture Cellars. And since 2015, Jesse has dedicated his attention to Aperture, crafting amazing Bordeaux-style wines from Sonoma.

Katz’s wines are surprising, with Old World structure and New World fruit, lush and representative of their origin, but also original, forward-thinking, not married to any regional stereotypes.” (Kim Westerman, Forbes, 31 Jul 2020)
