The 2020 Bourgogne Blanc comes from two parcels, mainly young vines around six years-old. It offers more tropical scents on the nose, touches of wild peach and a hints of nectarine. The palate has a pleasant roundness in the mouth, fine acidity, already quite generous to the point where you could drink this now. Delicious.

The 2017 Bourgogne Rouge, taken from tank, offers more fruit intensity than the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Rouge, pleasant strawberry and raspberry unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and crunchy dark berry fruit, but I would like a little more flesh to come through on the finish, which I’m sure it will by time of bottling.

Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of strawberry liqueur and smoky underbrush. Fat and sweet but with only modest vibrancy; fuller than usual for this wine, in the style of the year. Finishes with very fine tannins and good length.

The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny la Combe d'Orveaux offers pretty, well-defined scents of dark cherry, bergamot and bay leaf aromas, not intense but elegant or "transparent," as they say. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit. I like the balance and oak integration. Very poised and fresh toward the elegant but persistent finish. Excellent.

Mid ruby purple. Very charming and elegant pure Chambolle nose, with red fruit and violets. Sweetly sensual on the palate without becoming too plump. Entirely about the finesse and the persistence. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.

A big, structured wine, still young, with a dense, firm character. The wine is solid, with concentrated black fruits that power deep down into the texture, adding their richness to licorice, bitter chocolate and inspired acidity. Age for at least five years.

Medium red. Sweet red fruits complicated by menthol and licorice on the nose. Lush, broad and sweet in the middle palate, then a bit more taut on the back half, finishing with dusty tannins and lingering red fruits. With limited mineral and floral lift, though, this lacks a hidden dimension.

Good deep red. Raspberry, rose petal and crushed rock on the nose, with a minty lift. Juicy and very pure; there's good flesh here but today it's dominated by the wine's serious structure. A penetrating, pristine wine with terrific force; nothing overdone! The electric back end features exhilarating spicy high tones and a a powerful impression of energy.

It is endowed with more fruit intensity and presence on the nose, offering vigorous raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, superb mineralité and hints of orange blossom developing in the glass. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and impressive substance and tension toward the finish. An excellent Clos de Vougeot from Anne and Julie Gros.

A lot of wine in this Clos Vougeot.

The original planting has reached 120-year-old in 2024. A gorgeous full bright purple colour. A solid plump right of dark fruit, black and red cherries, the tannins are really refined, and the acidity keeps a fresh feel at the finish. Really successful this year.

Vinous (89+)

Palish red. Aromas of redcurrant, tobacco and soil are less precise than those of the Vosne-Romanee. Supple in texture but a bit autumnal after the last sample. Shows a bit of lift from rose petal but some edgy acidity gives the finish a spiky quality today and needs time to harmonize with the wine.

Grown in a single parcel that is 32 years old, this is a winsome Ech zeaux. It's an outpouring of pristine pure red fruits laced with minerality and sprinkled with sweet spices. Outgoing and welcoming, it reminded me of Anne's huge smile. (So often one can see the winemaker in her wine!) The gossamer structure definitely feels rather Vosne-like, even though this second smallest climat sits just about in the heart of Ech zeaux. 2023-36

A fresh mid ruby with glycerol legs. Very elegant with a welcome crispness too. Fluid in a very good way. Liquid raspberries and alpine strawberries which flow across the palate. A few refined tannins to finish. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.
