Heralded as the 'Master of Beaujolais', Marcel Lapierre is a winemaking legend. One of the original advocates of biodynamics and minimalist winemaking, Lapierre was part of the esteemed "Gang of Four" who turned the reputation of the region around, producing serious, terroir-focused wines.
Now in the very capable hands of Marcel's children Mathieu and Camille, the estate has maintained their non-interventionist philosophies of organics, biodynamics and minimal intervention and continue to make some of the region's finest wines.
Their Beaujolais Cru "Morgon has been consistently ranked one of the area’s top wines" (Wine Spectator).
The newly released 2018 vintage is no exception! Benefiting from the same growing conditions that brought success to their Burgundy neighbours in the north, and to the Rhône Valley in the south, Marcel Lapierre Morgon 2018 is "so pure and gorgeous" (Jancis Robinson).
Scoring a fantastic 94 points from Vinous and 18/20 points from Jancis Robinson, this overachiever was also declared in Decanter's 'Most Exciting Wines of the Year'.
Made of grapes from 60 year-old vines spread over just 13 hectares, it is a beautifully pure, exceptionally balanced, Burgundian-styled wine that shows off the nuances of the dynamic soils of Beaujolais' prestigious Morgan village Cru.
It will be enjoyable now, but with 10 years of aging ahead there is no need to rush! It is terrific value, and in the words of Neal Martin (writing for the Wine Advocate) "expand your Burgundy horizons and embrace Beaujolais" these are "just great wines that are a joy to drink".
