Jancis Robinson (17.5)

Nicolas Potel's négociant wine. 'No chaptalisation and no filtration therefore the most natural wines we've made for years. Some winemakers make a comparison with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Much more delicate than the Clos St-Denis. Wild strawberry fruit aromas plus delicate spice, and then more marked spice on the palate. All in a restrained and scented style and leading to a lingering finish and very fine tannins.

Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why.

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is superb, bursting from the glass with aromas of juicy cherries, peonies, blood orange, licorice, raw cocoa and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and succulent, with a concentrated, layered mid-palate, satiny structuring tannins and vibrant underlying acidity, concluding with a long finish. Harvested on October 7 at a comparatively high yield by Ponsot's standards of 38 hectoliters per hectare, this year seems to have been perfectly adapted to Ponsot's style. Vibrant, elegant and expressive, the 2016 is quite different from the richer, more powerful 2015, but in the fullness of time, I wouldn't be surprised to see it surpassing its brawnier elder sibling.

Wine Advocate (93+)

My favorite premier cru in the range this year is the 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, green apple, pear, oyster shell and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, taut and structured, with fine concentration and chalky extract, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-95)

Pale colour with green tints, very fresh, there is even a little bit of noble reduction. The 2018 Forêts delivers an absolutely scintillating, crystalline purity. There is impressive weight on the palate, balanced by a refreshing greener element to the fruit.

Wine Advocate (95)

The 2018 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is brilliant, unwinding in the glass with notes of crisp green apple, white flowers, fresh bread, iodine and oyster shell. Full-bodied, satiny and concentrated, with chalky extract and tangy acids, it's one of the cooler, more tensile wines in the range and stands out as a particular highlight.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-88)

Medium to light crimson. A beautiful pure pinot fruit. Really classy on the palate, with the domaine’s signature oak at the back. Perfect acid balance. Looking forward to seeing this in bottle. Drink from 2024-2026. Tasted: October 2022

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-99)

5 Star Wine. Picked 28th September. A rich, indeed sumptuous purple. Exceptionally youthful bouquet with a little touch of new wood. A magical wine, which is entirely in balance. It is not just the concentration which moves to another level but the sublime and effortless suavity of texture. All in pure red fruit, nothing dark, my favourite alpine strawberries, but a host of other berries as well. Magical.

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, the first Grand Cru to be picked with 50% whole clusters, has a fragrant, pure and (unlike Latricières) inviting bouquet that just wants to seduce. Very sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that frame the crystalline red fruit, supreme mineralité with one of the most elegant finishes you will find in this vintage. Reminiscent of Dugat's Chapelle-Chambertin, this is divine.

5 Star Wine. Louis considers that Latricières-Chambertin is typically three degrees cooler than neighbouring Combottes. 40% whole bunch vinification. Glowing purple. A touch of reduction on the nose but a vibrant luxurious fruit nonetheless. There is a gorgeous coating of a deep dark velvet fruit with the structure behind perfectly poised, refined tannins and clean acidity. Very long. A gorgeous wine in the making. Louis feels that 2020 lost the plot of Latricières – but not at all 2021.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Tête du Clos is one of the high points of the range this year. Exhibiting aromas of pear, waxy citrus rind, freshly baked bread, white flowers and wheat toast, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and incisive, with a satiny attack and a racy spine of acidity, concluding with a long, saline finish.

Burghound (93-96)

This is also wonderfully pure, elegant and ultra-fresh with an equally floral-inflected nose of lemon zest, wet stone and an herbal tea hint. There is an evident minerality to the beautifully detailed and highly energetic middle weight plus flavors that possess superb depth on the gorgeously textured, focused and firm finish. This isn't quite as refined as the Perrières but it's notably more powerful and should ultimately prove to the more complete wine if allowed to reach its apogee.

The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières unwinds in the glass with notes of citrus zest, pear, freshly baked bread, orange rind and smoky reduction. Medium to full-bodied, layered and immensely concentrated, it's chalky and tensile, with huge depth at the core and a long, mineral finish.

Decanter (92)

William Fevre own 46ha of AP Chablis but there was lots of frost damage in 2021 - the yield was just 18hl/ha! Lovely floral notes here, very precise and focussed. This is already appealing although the acidity is certainly evident. Lingering spice notes on the finish. From a tank sample, with bottling due in November. Drink from next year and for many years.

A cool and highly restrained nose reluctantly offers up its array of citrus, tidal pool, quinine and oyster shell. The exceptionally rich, even opulent, medium-weight plus flavors also brim with sappy dry extract on the mineral-driven, powerful and remarkably long finish. This is perhaps slightly less elegant than it typically is, but it is most impressive all the same. (93-95)/2033+

(5 Star Wine) Mostly from old vines, a good half planted between 1948 and 1952. Translucent lemon and lime colour. The bouquet is not ready to unfurl yet there is a sense of sublime purity about the nose. A wine in perfect harmony on its wide bench of white fruit. Just a little touch of spice behind, good acidity. Sign up for this! Drink from 2032-2045.

Decanter (96)

Beautiful mix of richness, grace and drive. As always with Fèvre's Les Preuses, this is elegant, long-living and fine. Ultra-stylish and very mineral. From two sections of vines. One situated low down on Les Preuses next to Vincent Dauvissat's plot, on the flatter part facing south, the other on deeper soils, with both adding richness and totalling 2.5ha.
