Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

A full purple with a ruby pink edge. Very classy and such delicacy after the robust Clos Vougeot. Little traces of roses, a soft beautiful raft of gentle graceful red fruits, silky yet with such a tensile strength. Does it knock me over as much as the 2020 – perhaps not quite as concentrated and of course I am now familiar with the phenomenon. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92)

5 Star Wine. A lively fresh yellow colour. Splashed in the glass, because there was not a carafe handy, though decanting is strongly recommended by the management for the two colours. Bottled with high carbon dioxide levels instead of any sulphur. This has a density which the 2024 will not quite match, a wine of character and real class. This is the white wine which I wanted to make, says Jean-Pierre.

Paler in colour, but has retained an element of smoky reduction. A little creamy flesh, the oak a bit less well integrated, good tension. Has not quite got back into place post bottling, I suspect.

100% new wood, all from Tonnellerie Rousseau, done with Jean-Pierre’s specified toast. This bold move on the oak front has not influenced the nose too much. An intriguing mix of red and black, with the spicy florality of the pedicels very evident but also integrated. Oak shows up at the back, but will resolve with this fruit concentration. Drink from 2027-2031. Tasted Nov 2024.

5 Star Wine. An even deeper purple. I thought it couldn’t get better than Les Brûlées, but it can. The fruit is a little darker, more raspberry than cherry, and there will soon be the lightest of chocolate notes. At this level the whole bunch clouds just add a nuance. This is more complex than the Brûlées, with a greater depth of fruit but could not be any more harmonious. Drink from 2029-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.

5 Star Wine. Ruby purple with a pinker edge. Such an elegant nose. There is a little bit of the singed rock but it barely competes with the exceptional fine red cherry and raspberry bouquet. This could be his best Brûlées yet and that is really saying a very great deal. Sensational texture, unexaggerated fruit, just joyous and gorgeous. Grace personified. The only reason I could consider withholding the 5th star is because the En Orveaux cuvée is even finer! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.

5 Star Wine. The village Vosne and the remaining cuvées all see 100% new wood. Glowing purple. Roses in early bloom. Goodness me this is so svelte on the palate with just some white pepper at the back. The fruit is at optimal ripeness, still red but with an additional generosity and the stems are perfectly integrated. A fractional saline note at the back adds an extra little zest. Drink from 2028-2034. Tasted Nov 2024.

5 Star Wine. A selection of individual old vines within Vosne-Romanée. A richer purple and notably more powerful in bouquet without toppling over. What an explosion of fruit, so totally luscious, roses and raspberries, a fraction of pepper, impeccable length. The beginnings of a chocolate note but above all some really well harnessed deep raspberry fruit still with floral overtones. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.

Aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread and subtle hints of citrus blossom introduce the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Le Concis du Champs, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy wine with good depth and cut. This is a specially strong rendition of this bottling, produced from massal selections planted at 14,000 vines per hectare.

The 2022 Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Gravières is especially appealing this year, bursting with aromas of pear, sweet citrus rind and stone fruit mingled with hints of freshly baked bread and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, combining attractive mid-palate amplitude with excellent cut, it's one of the sleepers of the range.

The holding is in the angle at the northern end of the vineyard, where Laurent has had a nice little wall in dry stone built. Dark black colour with light purple rim. As ever, this is much more Morey than Chambolle. Rich deep dark fruit with its typical savoury edge, dark raspberry notes, a little plum, flavours which reach far to the back of the palate. Succulent and savoury together and very persistent. 13.25% alcohol. Tasted: November 2021

The 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes from two terrors and is an acquisition of fruit. The nose is quite backward at first and does not quite slip into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry and strawberry entry, fine acidity, quite fleshy as you would hope from a Chambolle with the 30% whole bunch imparting a welcome spiciness on the finish. Very fine.

The 2020 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from purchased fruit, has a little more complexity than the Charmes-Chambertin, perhaps a touch more mineralité and florality. (from a parcel on the northern end). Firm reduction masks the fruit though there is again a beguiling sense of underlying tension suffusing the detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that flash good power on the moderately austere and lingering if mildly warm finish that is supported by relatively fine-grained tannins. In contrast to the Damodes that could reasonably be enjoyed young, this compact effort is clearly in need of at least moderate to longer-term cellaring.

(from a .41 ha parcel). Reduction. The much bigger broad-shouldered flavors also possess outstanding density and power while exuding evident minerality on the precise, firm and very serious finale that delivers excellent length where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is usually the undisputed best wine in the range but in 2022, the Perrières may well give it a run for its money.
