Vinous (97)The truly seductive 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Piccoli Contenitori is sweetly herbal, with earth tones, black cherries and crushed stone complemented by rosy florals. Swirling unlocks an intense wave of raspberry, cedar shavings and spice. It’s silky and pliant, but with a tannic structure that comes on fast, but doesn’t get in the way of its pure wild berry fruits, as zesty acidity keeps the energy high throughout. The prodigy of Gianfranco Soldera, there was no single greater mentor from which the young Stella di Campalto could learn the mysteries of Montalcino than the legendary winemaker, whose eponymous estate represents the apotheosis of modern Brunello for many lovers of the region.
At the very forefront of the new wave in Brunello di Montalcino, Stella di Campalto is a young, ambitious winemaker dedicating herself to her craft to further the quality and renown of Brunello di Montalcino.
Austere and often more rustic than many would perhaps prefer, there is more polish and subtle generosity to this Tuscan giant, Stella di Campalto is Brunello’s “one of the most promising young growers” (VN) in the eyes of Antonio Galloni of Vinous. |

Haling from the sun-drenched slopes of Tuscany, the Tassi Brunello di Montalcino 2016 combines elegance with daring complexity. Francis Tassi, a notable master of Italian viticulture, adopted meticulous hand-harvesting and long fermentation techniques to showcase the beauty of the Sangiovese grape. Ageing in carefully selected Slavonian and French oak barrels gracefully emboldens the wine's intensity, resulting in a resplendent ruby-red colour. The alluring perfume of wild berry, Mediterranean scrub, and a hint of spice intoxicates, while the palate is treated to red cherry, grilled herb and a playful hint of orange zest. This exquisite example of Tassi's craftsmanship exhibits firm tannins and vibrant freshness, adding balance and allure to the linear palate. Cloaked in refined grace and robust flavours, the Tassi Brunello di Montalcino 2016 is a quintessential example of Tuscany's treasured wines, possessing an engaging complexity destined to captivate the palates of both the casual admirer and avid connoisseur. |

Wine Advocate (94)The certified organic Tassi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino mirrors some of the qualities we saw in the new Rosso (Greppino 193) with a bright and lifted presentation. There is red cherry, pastry cream, plum and rose tea. The effect is delicate and elegant with fine, chalky tannins. These are the good kind of drying tannins that also remain silky. |

This wine is enjoyable on all fronts, but it won't be ready for prime-time drinking for another year or so. |

Wine Advocate (95)The Tassi 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Colombaiolo has a different character compared to the Giuseppe Tassi. This wine has a thicker weaving with more texture and fruit weight. This wine is horizontal in its delivery and the other is vertical. There are hints of marjoram, star anise and wild sage that add spice over a medium to full-bodied approach. |
