  • Michele Chiarlo Barolo Cerequio 1996 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90+)

Good ruby-red color. Deep, highly aromatic nose combines crystallized cherry, roasted meat, violet, cinnamon, tobacco, eucalyptus and underbrush. Juicy but still rather tight, even tart-edged, with a restrained sweetness. Rather dominated by its acidity today, but already offers enticing inner-mouth perfume of black cherry and violet. Slow-building, long finish suggests that this firmly structured, sharply delineated Barolo will develop well with six to eight years of bottle aging.

The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio is superb, but readers are going to have to be patient, as it is a wine for the cellar. It is quite evident the 2010 has already begun a move into a closed phase, as it is quite shut down in its aromatics. At the same time, the structural profile suggests it will enjoy a long drinking window starting around age 10-12, although that may be optimistic. Energetic, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass - with plenty of translucent energy - the 2010 Il Poggio is a wine to buy and forget about for another decade or so.

  • Monte Santoccio Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2018 (6x75cl)

    Matthew Jukes (18.5)

While the estate Valpolicella is the only wine which is drinking perfectly right now all of the wines in this piece are certainly approachable and yet they have considerable staying power, too. This Ripasso is, most-certainly, the wine with the highest ‘value ratio’ given that the flavour is astounding and the price, stubbornly, remains affordable! Of course, this is cause for great celebration because the extra dimension of flair and richness at the heart of this gorgeous Ripasso is sensational. While many wines of this style carry extra weight and darker fruit tones, this elite version parades red fruit and uncommon succulence. I absolutely love it and it fully deserves its gold medal score.

Medium bright red. Subdued, slightly warm aromas and flavors of red cherry, sweet spices and underbrush. Then at once sweet and sturdy in the mid-palate, with precise red cherry and redcurrant fruit flavors, but turns a touch dry on the back end. This kght come around in a few years.

  • Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio 2010 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Il Poggio is superb, but readers are going to have to be patient, as it is a wine for the cellar. It is quite evident the 2010 has already begun a move into a closed phase, as it is quite shut down in its aromatics. At the same time, the structural profile suggests it will enjoy a long drinking window starting around age 10-12, although that may be optimistic. Energetic, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass - with plenty of translucent energy - the 2010 Il Poggio is a wine to buy and forget about for another decade or so.
  • Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio 2019 (6x75cl)

The result is a wine with a deep garnet hue, echoing peppery spice, wild cherry, and earthy notes on the nose while the palate reveals layered complexity of fruit, spice, and subtle hints of vanilla. This full-bodied, well-structured wine showcases the precise craftsmanship of Laura Bianchi, the winery's third-generation owner, committed to producing wines that epitomize the soul of its unique terroir.
