The 2016 Campo di Magnacosta is an intriguing wine. A 100% Cabernet Franc from a tiny 1.5 hectare parcel on an old gravel river bed the Magnacosta is racy, silky and quite rich, as all these wines are. There is terrific aromatic brightness in the 2016, but less in the way of pure varietal Franc notes. Even so, there is something incredibly inviting to the wine. Super-ripe red cherry, pomegranate, mint and rose petal notes add striking shades of nuance through to the persistent finish. I would cellar the 2016 to allow more nuance to develop.

Vinous (95)

(60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and10% cabernet franc; 15% alcohol and a very high 40 grams per liter dry extract): Deep ruby. Red cherry, licorice, plum and vanilla on the rich nose. Then creamy-sweet and suave, with ripe red cherry, balsamic vinegar and coffee nuances carrying through to a long, fine-grained finish. This is perhaps the smoothest Giusto di Notri ever: it's almost too easy to drink right now. Owner Stefano Frascolla says it reminds him of the 2004 and 2006, but I find it smoother than the 2004. I find it amazing that a young cabernet/merlot blend could be this seamless. And it's also hard to detect the wine's high alcohol--because of the balance of the wine, not because your senses will have been numbed into oblivion after the first glass or two.

The 2016 Giusto di Notri is a profound and dark blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It exudes gravitas and importance with every sip, showing consecutive, deep layers of minerality, dark stone, spice and rich fleshy fruit, all bound by tight structure and fiber. This wine is remarkable both in terms of texture and dimension. There is a touch of sourness on the close. This is sure to be an interesting wine to follow as it opens up over the years. Indeed, the best is still to come, as Giusto di Notri is built for long cellar aging. With the next vintage, this wine celebrates its 25th birthday.

The 2017 Giusto di Notri is a special 25th anniversary bottling that is chiseled, sharp and focused. The small part of Merlot gives it some added sweetness (the percentage of Merlot was slightly reduced in this vintage), the touch of Cabernet Franc contributes the power, freshness and dark fruit, and along with a starring role of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine has lots of beautiful plushness restrained by a tight, disciplined linearity. This vintage saw less time in barrique (about 16 months) but the barrels had more toasting. There is a lasting mineral note of chalk or limestone that frames the dark and opulence quality of fruit at its core. The bouquet is stunning. The wine treads lightly in the palate, with a very elegant and nuanced approach. It really is another gorgeous wine from Tua Rita that shows the profound skill of this winemaking team even when faced with a hot vintage such as this.

I had previously reviewed this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot in a preview capacity. Now on the market, the 2018 Giusto di Notri comes together with seamless beauty. This is a rich and generous expression that delivers dark fruit intensity with blackberry and black currant, wrapped tightly together with ample oak notes of spice, tar and cured tobacco. The wine offers smooth transition and rich textural fiber, with soft angles and contours that frame the wine's full-bodied approach. Production is 33,000 bottles.

In a sense, this wine is like the Bosco dei Sugheri but with the addition of one more grape variety in the blend. The Tua Rita 2019 Giusto di Notri is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. I tasted the wine shortly after it had been bottled. With 40,000 bottles made, it should start hitting the market now. The Giusto di Notri offers lots of dark primary fruit with important structure and texture in this classic vintage. Blackberry and black plum cede to spice, tar and campfire ash. There's nothing not to like in this vintage that far exceeded initial expectations. I look forward to tasting more Tuscan reds from the excellent 2019 growing season.

Lots of incense to the aromas with sandalwood and lavender. Currants, blackberries. and fresh herbs, too. Full-bodied and very rich, with a powerful, structured mid-palate and a long, long finish. A wine for the future. Needs four to five years to soften. Try after 2026.

The Giusto Dei Notri cuvée is named for San Giusto, the patron saint of Suvereto, and Notri is the street where the winery is located. Made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Giusto Dei Notri spent 18 months in French oak barrique. A youthful saturated red color, it has a fantastically detailed, fresh nose redcurrants, cedar, dusty earth, Mediterranean herbs, and fresh red flowers. Full-bodied, it has a refined and elegant structure, with well-defined tannins, even, ripe acidity, and a great finish that gently floats off the palate. It’s a very, very impressive, elegant wine in the range to drink over the coming 20 years.

The 2014 Perlato del Bosco is pure Sangiovese and it represents a selection of the estate’s best fruit. The wine is profoundly fruity in character with wild berry, white cherry, plum and a touch of sweet apricot. It shows a charming and easy confidence that will make this wine an easy pairing partner to your favorite Italian pasta dishes. Perlato del Bosco is aged partially in barrique and botte grande. It offers a round and direct interpretation of Sangiovese that is specific to the Tuscan Coast. Give this wine another six months of bottle time.

The mid-weight 2015 Perlato del Bosco is a pure expression of Sangiovese that boasts the warmth and sunshine of Coastal Tuscany. The wine offers thick layers of fruit and spice that you would get, say, with Sangiovese from cooler inland areas with vineyards planted at higher altitudes over sea level. Bright cherry and wild raspberry transition to toasted almond, licorice and grilled herb.

The 2016 Perlato del Bosco, 100% Sangiovese, is plump, juicy and forward, all qualities that are typical of Sangioveses from the southern part of Maremma, and the Suvereto in particular. Varietal red Sangiovese fruit is nicely amped up in this generous, inviting wine. A touch of new oak frames the finish nicely.

A lean and light Sangiovese, the 2017 Perlato del Bosco has a great tonic freshness to it. Yields of this fruit were down by 40% in this hot vintage, an early harvest was scheduled in order to avoid any jammy notes. (The rest of the fruit that didn't pass the early selection at harvest went into some of the estates lower-tier wines, such as the Rosso dei Notri.) The result here is a fresh and crunchy red to match with a cheesy pasta such as cacio e pepe.

Saturated deep ruby. Intense aromas of blueberry, licorice, and espresso, complicated by stone and smoky black pepper nuances. Stylish and suave on entry, then elegant and powerful in the middle palate, offering complex pepper, mineral and mocha flavors. Very ripe, highly concentrated, creamy wine yet quite firm, and tannic on the finish. Production was down by about a thousand bottles because Frascolla was unhappy with the quality of three barriques and blended them into the '04 Giusto di Notri. Having tasted this juice directly from the suspect barrels, I can assure you the Giusto di Notri has nothing to complain about!

Tua Rita's Redigaffi is one of the best reds to emerge from Italy and the 2008 vintage delivers all the promise and hope of previous editions. The 2009 Redigaffi bursts onto the palate with an exciting melange of blackberries, grilled herbs, flowers, mint, rosemary and spices. It is a powerful, juicy Merlot loaded with fruit, but there is also more than enough structure to provide support. Dark notes of tar, incense and smoke add complexity on the finish. Rich, voluptuous and impeccably textured in the glass, the 2012 boasts massive depth and concentration, yet retains tons of freshness. Silky tannins round out a finish laced with melted road tar, herbs and leather. For such a big wine, the Redigaffi is remarkably complex and nuanced. The 2012 was aged in 100% new, thick-staved Darnajou barrels, which are seldom seen in Italy but widely used throughout Napa Valley and elsewhere. James Suckling (95)

Fantastic aromas of red pepper, chocolate, chili, and blueberry. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a beautiful length and balance. A triumph for a difficult vintage in 2014. And the 20th vintage of this great pure merlot made. I am not sure I would wait on this one. Too delicious now.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
