The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine that shows immense harmony and inner poise. The powerful vintage is elegantly tempered in this expression thanks to the flowing and musical nature of the aromatic presentation. The bouquet opens to a steady pace with small berry nuances followed by spice, tobacco, pressed rose and moist earth. Dig deep and there is a bit of white truffle in there as well. The wine boasts a silky texture with a lean, tonic feel that excels in terms of length and persistence. It never feels too heavy or flat. The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino Ginestreto takes things to a more classic place with dried strawberries, dusty florals, cloves and nuances of worn leather. It washes across the palate with a textural wave of ripe red and black fruits, supported by brisk acidity, as a salty core of minerals and fine tannins slowly saturates. The 2019 finishes structured and long, reminding me more of Brunello than Rosso, while leaving hints of licorice and minty herbs to linger on. (6x75cl) 2018Gagliole 2018 exemplifies the pinnacle of fine winemaking, meticulously crafted in the heart of Tuscany’s renowned Chianti Classico region. Produced by the esteemed Gagliole Estate, this vintage benefits from the estate’s century-old tradition and dedication to sustainable viticulture. Handpicked Sangiovese grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, then carefully fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve their vibrant flavours and aromatic complexity. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes a maturation process in French oak barrels for 18 months, imparting subtle notes of vanilla and spice while allowing the fruit character to flourish. The result is a beautifully balanced wine with deep ruby hues, intense aromas of cherry and plum, and a harmonious palate marked by silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. Gagliole 2018 is a testament to the producer’s commitment to quality and tradition, making it a distinguished choice for connoisseurs seeking excellence in every sip.

The 1988 Barbaresco offers the classic nose of dried cherries, herbs, cedar, and toasty oak. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, with considerable tannic clout. The long finish is dominated by the wine's tannins. It should benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring and keep for 10-15. All of Gaja's 1988 Barbarescos are backward, reserved wines. Even after sitting four days with the corks pulled they exhibited no signs of oxidation. While they should be uncommonly long-lived, I did not see quite the flesh and richness possessed by such vintages as 1985 and 1982. Importer: Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY.Inc. GSTSG$348.70 -

In 2012, Gaja didn't bottle his single-vineyard crus because they didn't reach his high quality standards, and many of the grapes from these celebrated vineyards finished in this elegant, firmly structured wine. It opens with enticing aromas of perfumed berry, pressed violet and sweet baking spice. On the palate, a backbone of tightly woven but refined tannins support black cherry, raspberry, white pepper, anise and tobacco. It's rather austere and still in its infancy so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2018–2032.Inc. GSTSG$2,158.68 -

The 2013 Barbaresco is fabulous. In fact, this is one of the best Barbarescos I have tasted at Gaja in many years. Vibrant, perfumed and beautifully sculpted in the glass, the 2013 possesses tons of understated intensity. Sweet red cherry, mint, white pepper and anise are all lifted in the glass. Light ruby coloured with a brilliant translucence, the 2020 is sleek, powerful, linear and brightly fruited with powdery fine grained mineral tannins over potent peppery red berry aromatics, Asian spices, red cherry and pithy wild strawberry. Medium bodied, ultra-pure and magnificently floral with tantalising salty red liquorice nuances make this an incredibly pretty but substantial expression of Nebbiolo that finishes with creamy, drying stony tannins, a crushed limestone minerality before a final reprise of tangy red cherry pastille. A very impressive Gaja Barbaresco vintage that will drink well from release due to its incredible finesse and elegance but will of course be exponentially better in 4 to 5 years’ time. Yet again, Gaja produces a class act!In BondSG$701.00 -
