Medium in body, with terrific depth as well as nuance, the 2017 is understated, classy and polished to the core. In 2017, Cortese did not bottle their flagship Riserva, instead all of the best fruit went into the straight Barbaresco Rabajà. The 2017 Barbaresco Rabajà is a very pretty and expressive wine. Blood orange, cedar, mint, sweet red cherry and licorice are all layered together. Medium in body, with terrific depth as well as nuance, the 2017 is understated, classy and polished to the core. In 2017, Cortese did not bottle their flagship Riserva, instead all of the best fruit went into the straight Barbaresco Rabajà. The 2012 Barolo Perno revealed an open and fleshy personality when I sampled it. This points to the warmth of the 2012 vintage. With fruit harvested closer to the winery in Monforte d'Alba, this Barolo initially shows a dry personality with pressed tones of wild berry and red rose petal. It also reveals a fluid or flexible side, which means the wine takes on more volume quite rapidly once poured from the bottle. Showing bold ripeness with strawberry and sweet raspberry aromas, the Giuseppe Mascarello 2020 Barolo Villero is more reflective of the hot vintage than the other wines in this flight. The bouquet shows hints of white raisin and dried plum. But you also get the salty, mineral notes that distinguish Castiglione Falletto. In fact, they are central to the personality of this accessible wine. Villero ferments in cement and remains in contact with the skin for 16 to 18 days, or even up to 21 days in certain vintages.
