Claudio Boggione's 2016 Barolo Brunate is all class. Beautifully perfumed and sensual, the 2016 captures all of the beguiling aromatic intensity that makes Nebbiolo and Barolo so captivating. Rose petal, mint, cedar, bright red cherry, dried flowers and star anise are some of the many notes that lift from the glass. Although Boggione's 2016 doesn't have the gravitas and power usually associated with Brunate, it is an archetype of traditionally-made Barolo that will delight readers with classically leaning palates. I loved it.

Boroli's 2004 Barolo is a pretty, fragrant wine. It offers nice up-front intensity in its fruit, but then tails off a bit on the mid-palate. With air, notes of leather, spices and toasted oak develop, adding further complexity. A few years of bottle age should help this fruit-driven Barolo integrate its oak. The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is attractive, but also embryonic. Sweet tobacco, cedar, leather, dried herbs and crushed rose petal emerge, but only with some reluctance. Silky Cannubi tannins lend finesse, suggesting what is to come. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is going to need a few years to be fully expressive. The 2016 Barolo Castellero is a powerful, pleasantly rustic wine that is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Burly tannins convey an impression of rusticity, but beyond that, there is good depth and plenty of fruit as well. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2016 for at least a few years. The 2018 Barolo Sarmassa benefits from the addition of the fruit that would have gone into the Riserva. A Barolo of breadth and power, the Sarmassa possesses terrific depth and plenty of substance. Dark plum, gravel, cured meat, smoke, licorice and incense add to a feeling of somber gravitas. I won't be surprised if the 2018 turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Hints of dried herb, menthol, licorice, tobacco and incense linger on a finish graced with notable aromatic complexity.

Brezza is dedicated to organic viticulture, and works only with indigenous yeast, big oak vessels and long macerations in the cellar. His 2019 Sarmassa is one of the most elegant Barolos of the vintage, if not the most. Bright ruby in the glass and vibrant on the nose, the tannins are impeccable. Plenty of Parma violet notes are to the fore, soaked with rhubarb root, liquorice stick and a whiff of yellow fruits. The attack is poised, soft and silky, with long, lifted acidity. There is a perfect extraction here – the tannins are very well judged and ripe.

This is a successful effort at this level.

The 2019 Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Brezza. In fact, it's one of the best editions of this wine I can remember tasting. Bright, translucent and full of character, the straight Barolo is all charm. Crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, sage, mint and sweet spice all lend notable complexity throughout. Vineyard sites are San Lorenzo, Fossati, Ravera (Novello) and Bricco San Pietro. Fruit is harvested and vinified separately, then the lots are blended before malolactic fermentation.

Vinous (92)

The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is attractive, but also embryonic. Sweet tobacco, cedar, leather, dried herbs and crushed rose petal emerge, but only with some reluctance. Silky Cannubi tannins lend finesse, suggesting what is to come. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is going to need a few years to be fully expressive. The 2018 is suave and very nicely balanced, especially for the year, but it is also the least expressive wine in the range today.

The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is one of the best wines I have tasted from Brezza in a very long time. Sweet, perfumed and silky, the 2019 bristles with Cannubi character. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, mint, rose petal and orange zest are some of the notes that grace this exquisite but potent Barolo. Give the tannins a few years to soften.

Scorched earth, tobacco, menthol, macerated dark cherry, licorice, game and incense add to the wine's dark, wild and virile feel.

The 2019 Barolo Castellero is a deep, beguiling wine. Deeply pitched spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs meld into a core of dark-toned fruit. Virile and imposing, with notable inner sweetness, the Castellero is stunning. There's a bit of new oak influence, but it is not dominant. This is another superb Barolo from Brezza.

Good bright medium red. Strawberry and a flinty note on the nose. Rich, ripe and fairly open-knit for young Barolo, but with good power nonetheless. Shows sexy early sweetness to the plush red fruit and complex earth flavors. This fruit bomb of a Barolo finishes with sweet tannins and lovely length. From clay-rich soil.

Decanter (97)
